The guy already announced he wasn't running for re-election, and now he's stepping down...
"My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country and at this stage in my life, and after nearly 12 years of public service in Florida and Washington, it's time I return to Florida and my family. So today I am announcing my decision to step down from public office, effective on a successor taking office to fill out the remainder of my term."

Well from what the people from Florida have to say the resignation of Martinez is no great loss.

Yeah we have great Senators from Illinois.
Sheesh!
What's the difference between an Illinois Senator and the Governor?
The Senator doesn't retire to the federal penitentiary!

Gee, I e-mailed the Senator a couple of weeks ago and told him that if he voted to confirm Sotomayor to the Supreme Court that he should resign as Senator, who would have thought he would have listened to me - one of the voters in his own state?

Democrats have become such hypocritical whiners lately. Thurman is whining about the likelihood of a Republican governor replacing a Republican senator with another Republican, claiming it would be playing political games. Well excuse me for saying so, but appointing anyone other than a Republican to that seat would be playing politics. The voters elected a Republican to that seat, so a Republican should fill it.
Talk about whiners, did you hear the one about Obama saying "I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess..." The problem with that whine is that the folks who made the mess are in control of congress and they are happily creating an even bigger mess with Obama's help.

Well, good damn riddance, he was a RINO and not a very intelligent one either. Now lets see who Crist chooses to replace him. It should be interesting to see who he picks as he'll probably be running against him.

One thing I hope Crist realizes is that the Feds have likely bugged his office, tapped his phone, and set up a sting to see if they can do a blago on him. Even a hint of wrong doing will taint both Crist and anyone he appoints to Martinez's seat, and that will insure the election of another Democrat in 2010. Maybe he'll follow Thurman's advice and appoint an independent knowing, as Thurman does, that such a person would be unlikely to win if they ran in 2010 unless they are both charismatic and wealthy; and easy combination to avoid.
