Barack Obama says that we should not fear private insurance companies competing against the government because that's what Fed Ex and UPS do and they're getting along just fine. It's the Post Office that's always struggling, he tells us. And this is supposed to alleviate our concerns how, exactly?
Everyone knows that the United States Post Office is always in the red, so Obama telling government run health care skeptics to not worry, it will be like the Post Office is laughable. The Heritage Foundation lists a few pertinent questions that President Obama needs to answer, via Power Line:
1.) The U.S. Post Office is the only entity allowed by federal law to deliver first class mail to your mailbox. In fact, Fedex and UPS are strictly prohibited from delivering "non-urgent" letters. If the government can fairly compete and is setting fair rules, wouldn't the post office be open to competition at your mailbox?2.) If Americans were offered "free" postage paid for by massive government spending and tax hikes, would Fedex and UPS still exist?
3.) The Post Office is on track to lose a staggering $7 billion this year alone. How will a government-run health care plan manage taxpayer resources more efficiently?
4.) Postmaster General John Potter says he lacks the "tools" necessary to run the Post Office effectively like a business. Would a government-run health care system have the tools it needs to run as effectively as the private sector entities it is replacing?
5.) On the one hand, the President remarks how great his public health care plan will be. On the other hand, he notes it won't be good enough to crowd out your private insurance, i.e. the Post Office comparison. So which is it Mr. President? Will it be so great that private insurance disappears or so awful that it isn't worth creating in the first place?
6.) But the most important question is this: if you have an urgent piece of mail you need delivered, life or death, who are you going to call? Everyone saying the government...please raise your hands. (crickets)
I call UPS or FedEx, just like everyone else.

Everything in the government is paid for by tax payers. The feds don't produce anything, or sell anything to receive money, they take it via taxes. Only two areas produce & sell, the post office and the mint. We know self sustaining the usps is.

Yeah, Jim - it could be the cognitive dissonance has caused paralysis. Or they could just be sleeping in and waiting for new talking points.
I think the latter is more likely, actually.
Frankly, the Post Office isn't really badly run. I don't know of any other service that'll get a physical letter across the country in just a couple of days for much less than a buck - or worldwide in a relatively timely fashion for a very low perceived cost.
But they're running up against a couple of problems. Email gets there virtually instantly, so the perceived value of a snail-mail simple message has dropped to pretty much zero. (Kind of hard to compete with 'free', after all)
They do GREAT when it comes to handling packages (their partnership with PayPal and EBay to enable you to print out postage labels at home and slap them on what you need to ship is very convenient) but they haven't been advertising it excessively. I've seen a few ads - but unless you pay close attention you're not too sure whether they're for the USPS or FedEx.
Really, though, it was a bad example Obama chose. There's little respect for the Post Office - it's just background, nothing special, and slightly annoying to boot. Not what I'd want to associate w/any health care plan.

I doubt many on either side fail to believe in reform the issue is how and how high the cost.
By "keep tweaking" it do you mean like the CARS program where the WH had to quickly pull down a requirement that car dealers computers would become property of the US Gov. if they logged into the system?
By tweaking it do you mean what some have called a "death panel" that takes 10 pages in the bill to explain but doesn't give a single restriction to what and how this panel would be run?
That panel can just as easily be "tweaked" in the direction the seniors in the country are worried about, i.e. lose of care or being told they are too old for certain procedures.
How about this "Tweak" that was summarily turned down by the dems.
The ass=hat congress-critter in Minn. was asked at her town hall meeting if any federal money would be spent on any abortion related issues.
She flatly denied there would be, but she and her dem colleges are too cute by half. She didn't lie just failed to tell the entire story.
An amendment was introduced specifically to ban any Fed cash be spent on abortion in any form the dem asshats killed the amendment.
Which leads me and anyone with more than a single brain cell to conclude there will be a whole lotta "tweaking" going on and abortion will in fact be flush with cash at some point.

actually, its a very apt comparison. Fed Ex, and the like, are businesses designed to make money. to that end, they do. there are no ads sent through Fed Ex because they would be prohibitively expensive.
The USPS is not designed to make money. it runs a deficit because no one cares if it is profitable. its a service by the People, for the People. it is fast, efficient, and cheap. (unless you count the cost in taxes)
this is exactly what Obama hopes his Public Plan will be. an efficiently run althernative to the expensive, for-profit plans that will offer honest compensation for a fraction of the cost.
the reason that Fed Ex and its competitors offer Overnight service, web tracking, and other services? Because without those luxury services, would just go to the Post Office and pay a fraction of the cost. the USPS FORCED those companies to innovate, and still find a way to keep their costs down. And, in turn, the commercial services are forcing the USPS to innovate. They are offering web tracking, electronic postage, and other services because the for-profit boys are stealing their customers. For the consumer, its a win/win

I laughed out loud when I heard him actually say that! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. He's sounding more like Barney Fife every day. My apologies to Don Knotts.
