The Price Of the Emperor's New Clothes

The Left has been in a frenzy in the days following the ObamaCare pep rally outburst by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.). The "You lie" accusation not only elicited a totally qualified apology from the congressman but it has also established a market of sorts that serves as a barometer of political passion:

With a political arms race in full force, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has raised almost $750,000 in less than 48 hours since his shout of "You lie!" to President Obama during the Wednesday address to Congress, almost matching the Internet-fueled haul of his likely Democratic opponent.

A senior GOP official said Wilson, who apologized to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel after the health-care speech but has since refused a more public apology, has turned his own previous sleepy campaign machine into an Web-friendly effort. Just as liberals have poured cash into the campaign of Rob Miller, who lost to Wilson by almost eight percentage points in 2008, conservatives are pouring contributions into Wilson's campaign at an astonishing rate.

Having lived in South Carolina for several years I can reasonably predict that if Congressman Wilson's opponent, Rob Miller, could not get within eight points of him in 2008 then he doesn't have a hope and change chance of getting closer in a mid term 2010 contest. Therefore, the money pouring into Miller's campaign is what political insiders call weak money. All hat, no cattle.

Congressman Wilson's outburst on Wednesday was, in microcosm, the emperor's new clothes moment for which many political spectators have been patiently waiting. Suddenly someone in Washington has called this President's bluff. Politics, when stripped to the bone, is a confidence game. President Obama and his aides know they are losing at that game, hence the Wednesday pep rally and faux outrage at Joe Wilson. We are witnessing the most rapid destruction of a presidency in recent history, a political bubble that is bursting only now because a poorly vetted candidate with no qualifications is encountering a modicum of reality.

Reality has a way of doing that. President Thin Skin has never experienced "NO!" before and does not know how to handle it. Witness his "speech" which was full of contradictions. Wilson easily defeated Miller by eight points in 2008, but the incumbent is now polling 43 percent to Miller's 44 percent, according to Public Policy Polling (PPP). The sudden shift in local popularity is likely the consequence of Wilson's remark on Wednesday night: More than 60 percent of surveyed voters in his district said they disapproved of the congressman's actions.

"In a matter of seconds Joe Wilson turned himself from a safe incumbent into one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the country for 2010," said Dean Debnam, president of PPP.

Even Jimmy Carter was still in the high 60s at eight months in office. It was not until the long gas lines double digit inflation, double digit interest rates and double digit unemployment that started to sink him. The Iranian hostage crisis and the inept way he handled it, is what sank his presidency.

I have never been much won over by the experience argument...I know South Carolina has it's own special history of experienced politicians such as 'Pitchfork Ben Tillman', who when Governor in 1900, "We have done our level best [to prevent blacks from voting]-the Jim Crow laws- we have scratched our heads to find out how we could eliminate the last one of them. We stuffed ballot boxes. We shot them. We are not ashamed of it"

or when elected and relelected US Senator four times....

"We of the South have never recognized the right of the negro to govern white men, and we never will. We have never believed him to be the equal of the white man, and we will not submit to his gratifying his lust on our wives and daughters without lynching him."

Reacting to news that Booker T. Washington had dined at the White House with President Theodore Roosevelt and his family, Tillman predicted, "The action of President Roosevelt in entertaining that nigger will necessitate our killing a thousand niggers in the South before they will learn their place again."

I know this is old history, but the reality of 2009 is that the majority of whites and GOP voters are unwilling to accept a black and bi-racial president and too willingly wish to believe he wasn't even born in the USA.

America must be the only country in the first or any world that doesn't have a real public healthcare plan for it's citizens let and rations health care on income, while providing a great 'public option' bi- partisan expensive safety net for its bankers and moneyed elite.

Tillman was a member of the Democratic Party. How do the words of a Democrat tar "the majority of whites and GOP voters?" Moreover, I note that President Obama was born outside the United States; he was born in the territory of Hawaii. He was, however, a natural born citizen of the United States, which is the actual requirement in the Constitution. Moreover, like the president and like Senator McCain (born in Panama), I too am a natural born US citizen who was born outside the United States (Okinawa, in my case).

You have free choice to see who you want and can afford to see, just like you can buy food, clothing and shelter and have all different levels of those items depending on your economic status.
You can be treated regardless of your ability to pay.
You have the ability to seek redress for grievance for shoddy medical work.
The USA has some of the Highest survivability rates for all forms of cancer and chronic disease
In states where their is not public option we have shortest waiting time to see a doctor.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I'll note that all these polls you cite to 'demonstrate' that republicans are racist are asking if people believe Obama was born inside or outside the United States.

Most educated people recognize that a person can be born outside the US to a US citizen and still be a natural US citizen. I would wager that a significant number of people believe he may have been born outside the US or are unsure, but still believe that he is a US citizen. The poll overlooks this issue and conflates people who think that he may be a citizen born outside the country with someone who is not a citizen.

The poll questions are phrased this way for the purpose of creating the impression of bias and racism.

In other words: You are finding racism because that is what you want to find. The racism is in your heart, not ours.

Secondly, as others have already alluded to: Lincoln was a Republican. The south went Democrat immediately after reconstruction. Dems were the ones who seceded, made the Jim Crow laws, institutionalized discrimination, and fought against civil rights. It was a dem who promised, "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" - George Wallace.

I find it interesting to note that after becoming a born-again Christian, Wallace changed his views and sought forgiveness and reconciliation with the black community, since Dems LOVE to characterize Christians as racists. I find it also interesting that after this change of views Wallace's son became a Republican rather than just another racist Democrat.

The Dems are without ideas ... (Below threshold)
jim m:

The Dems are without ideas because they have learned NOTHING from the last 100 years about the failure of socialism and racial politics.

Their attempts to socially engineer society have led them to construct monstrous urban housing projects that universally turned our inner cities into hell holes of drugs crime and unemployment.

They have created social programs like welfare that forced poor families to separate leading to fatherless families that created fertile recruiting grounds for street gangs.

They have promoted racial demagogues as leaders who have stoked racial hatred and division turning Martin Luther King Jr's dream on its head. Instead of a society that measures people on their character and ability the Dems have created a society that looks at skin color and membership in grievance groups. The result is an attitude of entitlement that even Michelle Obama exemplified when he demanded promotion over more senior lawyers in her firm on the sole basis of her skin color.

Finally the Dems have entirely missed the lessons of communism and socialism from failed countries and economies of the Warsaw Pact, South America and Africa. The failures of these nations are legion and the destruction to the people, economies and ecology of their nations is measured in the millions of deaths, the depths of deepest poverty, and land that is uninhabitable for 100's of years in the future. These countries have poisoned the ground, dried up whole inland seas and fouled the air with pollution.

Yet these are the examples that we should be following. They excoriate the US for not ratifying the Kyoto Agreement and ignore the fact that even without doing so the US has done more to reduce carbon emissions than all the countries that have actually ratified it.

The Dems have no ideas other than to follow these despotic, ignorant and criminal regimes into failure and poverty.

Crickmore-A word a... (Below threshold)
jim m:

Crickmore-

A word about what rationing REALLY is: Rationing is a method for limiting the purchase or usage of an item when the quantity demanded of the item exceeds the quantity available at a specific price.

Our system does not ration health care. it does ask people to pay for what they want and not all people can afford what they want. At that point you might as well say that we ration Rolls Royces.

In a government run system health care IS rationed. If the number of procedures budgeted for have been completed, you cannot get one. Hence the long waiting lines for chemotherapy, open heart surgery, orthopedic surgery, etc. Outcomes are seriously and negatively effected.

In the US if you do not have the income to pay for your health care or that of a loved one you can: earn more money by working extra hours or getting a part time job, sell assets, borrow against your property or from relatives, seek charity (hospitals actually will assist in this), or find the health care elsewhere at a better price.

Health care in he US is growing in part because people want more of it and find ways to pay for it. There is not a limit to the number of procedures that can be done. For the most part the ability of the system to supply the care desired exceeds demand.

We have the highest quality health care in the world that provides the best outcomes. Elsewhere on Wizbang I posted a comment that showed that, despite some people not being insured, our rates of cancer survival indicate that even those without insurance are getting treated and they are surviving their disease.

If people without insurance are still able to access the system and get life saving treatment are we really rationing it?

No.

There are still some in the Senate now that were the main obstacles to the passage of the bill. Robert 'Sheets' Byrd was one, Hell, he was at one time (probably still is, if the truth would be known) a Grand Wizard in KKK. If it had not be for the Republicans, there would have never been a civil rights law. Of course, the Dems take credit for the passage, to cover their asses, whenever the racist charge comes up, but we all know deep down they would really love to see things back the way they were before 1964.

What really is happening is that Wilson's outburst brought the issue to the fore and the Dems are trying to quietly change the bill so that their rhetoric matches reality. If hey really didn't want to cover illegals they would have passed these provisions earlier when they were offered by republicans. The fact that they only do so now is essentially an admission that they have been caught.

What everyone else has learned is that you can say that someone should not be covered, but if you prohibit any action that would enforce that rule then he rule is meaningless and for show only. THAT is what he Dems were doing and THAT is what they are embarrassed by and trying to correct now.

The main stream media is having fun poking at Congressman Wilson, and calling for the end of our conservative attempts to keep the USA from going cockeyed. But alas, as I see it, when Rep. Wilson pulled at Obama's 'clothing' with the "You Lie" reaction to obvious Obama lies, well the whole suit of clothing came peeing off.

Layer by layer Dems are retreating everywhere, and what was to be, as conceived by them , will no longer be. Wilson's act of exposing Obama has Obama running for the Hill to change the "illegal alien" coverage in any new health plan. Obama has been forced to do damage control to make sure his lie isn't proven true. And Glenn Beck at al, are tearing at the very fiber of the Obama clothing machine, robbing it of any false cover. First Beck nails Van, and Obama throws him out. Bye bye Van. Then Beck and Breitbart nail ACORN, and Obama (see US Census) throws Acorn out.

I say no new oak trees! The pressure is working, and soon we can throw the Congress out and follow that by throwing Obama out.

We must keep up the pressure to mitigate any damage that this bunch of thieves can do to our USA during these next three years.

Good Luck and fight on and fight online!

SAUD,

Looking at both links the first one has absolutely nothing to do with Joe Wilson. It refers to a Ron Wilson, but unless I am mistaken these are DIFFERENT people. While Ron Wilson may indeed be a racist this article from the Southern Poverty Law Center has nothing to do with what we are talking about and is off base. Further more the SPL has made a living by race baiting and providing wildly inaccurate 'statistics' about hate crimes that have done more to stoke racial animosity in the last 30 years than anything else.

The second link to Wilson's reaction to allegations brought up against the late Sen. Thurmond after his death that he fathered an illegitimate child were couched as being against the charges since Thurmond being dead could not defend himself. Furthermore when it appeared that the allegations had some basis he apologized.

Neither post shows Wilson to be a racist. They do however show you to be a race baiter.

I'd like to see Obama apologize for even one of he DOZENS of lies he has made since taking the oath of office.

You are willing to use racial politics to advance your own agenda, but you are happy to allow racism to flourish when it suits your purposes. "Why did the Democratic Party support slavery in the 1860's and OPPOSE the Civil Rights Act in the early 1960's? "

For the same reason they oppose black conservatives in any office.

For the same reason they oppose inner city blacks having the opportunity to access better private school education.

For the same reason they made welfare an economic sink hole that trapped recipients in it for years.

For the same reason they made the welfare rules favor single parent families so that it destroyed the black family unit.

For the same reason they support Planned Parenthood, an organization founded for the primary purpose of aborting black children so their numbers don't become too great.

Dems have for well over 100 years prospered on exploiting black people and keeping them in want and poverty. Not one of their acts has actually improved the status or position of blacks.

They stood against emancipation

They stood against civil rights

They stood against welfare reform

They stood against desegregation

They stand against school choice and equal access to better education

They stand against measuring people by their ability and not by the color of their skin.

The dems are the racists. They always have been.

Everything I wrote above is true. The Dems have stood against racial equality at every turn. They continue to do so. They use charges of racism to distract from the real issues.

Just as in this case you use charges of racism to distract from the reality that Wilson was right about Obama's lies.

I brought up no strawmen. I simply do not care about Wilson's politics beyond this particular issue. If you want to say something hen address the accuracy of the health care issue.

The fact of the matter is that the Dems HAVE rushed to change the legislation. The fact is that the bill DID allow for illegal aliens to get coverage provided by taxpaying Americans.

Socialized medicine has failed everywhere it has been tried.

The US has higher survival rates for EVERY form of cancer.

Men (Insured or not) in the US have an over 6% better chance of surviving cancer than any citizen in any country in the world.

People like their own insurance but they want insurance to be available to everyone. There has been a LOT of dissembling from the administration about what's in this bill.

People want good health care available to everyone. We already have good health care we don't want a plan that sacrifices good health care for social engineering ends.

Health care has been portrayed as a greedy for-profit industry. The overwhelming number of hospitals are not-for-profit entities as are many of the service organizations that support health care.

This is not an industry running on greed and abusing the population. It serves us well. It has given us the best possible health care that is significantly better in terms of quality than anywhere else on earth.

What happened to those voters? They're now called Dixiecrats. They vote Republican in national elections and Democratic party locally.

So in short:

- you guys are out of touch with factual reality.
- if you guys actually want to be in touch with factual reality, you should face the fact that Obama was actually telling the truth. And if you are to apply the same standard to Wilson as you do to Obama, that means WIlson was lying.
