Revealed: The Story Behind The Obama "Jackass" Remark

Wizbang Pop might have the audio of President Obama calling Kanye West a "jackass," but only I have the tape of the planning behind that "accidental" leak. And here's the transcript:

"So, what the hell was up with that whole Kanye West - Taylor Swift thing. Everyone's talking about it, so I better say something. After all, I am the president."

"Um... are you sure you want to go there, sir? The whole thing just isn't presidential."

"People are talking about it, and I'm the president of the people, so I am obligated to say something. How about I start off with 'we don't know all the facts, but it's clear that Taylor Swift acted stupidly?'"

"That wouldn't be wise, sir."

"Why not?"

"Well, for one, the whole world already knows all the relevant facts. It happened on live TV, and the video's all over YouTube. It's clear that West was way out of line, and Ms. Swift did nothing wrong."

"That's unfortunate. How about I try to heal the rift by inviting the two of them over to the White House to discuss it over beer?"

"There are two problems with that one, sir. First, West was most likely drunk when he did that, so giving him more booze would probably not help the situation. Second, Ms. Swift is only 19. I think you see the potential problems if we show two black men giving booze to an underage white girl."

"And I was supposed to get America past that whole race thing. Damned redneck crackers. Well, what can I do?"

"I'd suggest you call West a "jackass" in front of reporters, but then say it was off the record."

"What will that achieve?"

"Oh, lots of things. Most of the press will keep it quiet, showing that they're still subservient. But it's soo juicy -- the president using the word 'ass' -- that it'll leak out. That'll show us who can't be trusted in the press. But once it's out, most Americans will like you for saying what they're thinking, and respecting you for not using the real words you obviously want to use."

"I like it. But what if someone wants to defend Kanye and criticizes me for calling him a jackass?"

"Then we quietly point out that the jackass is the symbol of your party, and you're actually reaching out to him in a way that makes it clear that no matter what he says or does, he's always welcome in the party of the jackass."

"OK, let's do it. But make sure that Tapper asshole from ABC is around when I say it. He's the only one in the press who treats me just like a Republican president -- he'll be sure to leak it."

Obama just can't resist shooting his mouth off on any subject, no matter what.

I think he's going to turn out to be a one-term president, but even if I'm wrong about that, that doesn't worry me. What worries me is that he is obviously so taken with himself, so very impressed with all the words that come out of his own mouth, there's no way he's ever going to retire from public life. Unfortunately, he is still a young man, so the very thought of having to endure his narcissistic gasbaggery for the next 30 or 40 years is enough to give me severe intestinal cramps.

Nah. What REALLY happened is that Obama was misquoted. Again.

He was referring to Jimmy Carter's comments, not Kanye West.

Revealed - the true story behind President Obama's remark:

Harwood had sat down with the president to tape an interview following his appearance on Wall Street on Monday. Although they are competitors, CNBC and ABC share a fiber optic line to save money, and this enabled some ABC employees to listen in on the interview as it was being taped for later use.

Their attention was drawn to chatter about West, who was widely criticized for interrupting Swift as she accepted an award at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards to say that Beyonce deserved it.

During what sounds like informal banter before the interview begins, Obama is asked whether his daughters were annoyed by West's hijacking of Swift's acceptance statement, according to an audio copy that was posted on TMZ.com.

"I thought that was really inappropriate," Obama says. "What are you butting in (for)? ... The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person. She's getting her award. What's he doing up there?"

A questioner chimes in, "Why would he do it?"

"He's a jackass," Obama replies, which is met with laughter from several people.

The president seems to quickly realize he may have gone too far, and jovially appeals to those assembled that the remark be kept private. "Come on guys," he says. "Cut the president some slack. I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate."

E-mails shot around among ABC employees about Obama's comments, said Jeffrey Schneider, ABC News spokesman. Before anything was reported on ABC's air or Web site, at least three network employees took to Twitter to spread the news.

One was Terry Moran, a former White House correspondent. He logged on to Twitter and typed: "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential."

HE RETRACTED THE REMARK. Those who released the "OFF THE RECORD" remark apologized to the White House.

jim:

Garandfan - this is actually Jim. Jim M is someone who appears to usually argue for your side. Oh well, PEEPEEBREATH.

So let me attempt to instruct you again, POOPOOFACE.

1. Obama retracting the remark means that he intended for the remark to be off the record. That would probably be because the statement, while accurate, was also rude. And the President, unlike some, does not see a need to publicly insult people needlessly.

2. This article, on this page, which is the article that I am responding to, makes absolutely no mention of Obama retracting this remark.

What #2 means, DOODYPANTS, is that you are getting all riled up about Obama retracting this statement, as some kind of proof of something.

When it is clear as daylight that Obama retracted this statement because (a) it was an offhand comment (b) in an unofficial moment on (c) an inconsequential pop culture event, that he then (d) asked to be left off the record - which was then (e) not.

Is that clear enough, DOOKIEHEAD?

Jim, I think I can speak for the author here. He didn't include Obama's retraction for two reasons:

1) The article is set BEFORE the statement was made, and therefore before the retraction was issued.

B) It was satire, and Obama's retraction (after the fact) was not satire -- merely laughable. It let him have it both ways -- he gets credit for saying it, and credit for not saying it.
