Rush Limbaugh sacked

We live in seriously sad, dare I say tragic, times:

The group bidding to purchase the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League is prepared to do so without the financial backing of Rush Limbaugh, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

The conservative American radio talk show host Limbaugh is expected to be dropped as a minority member of the group which also includes New York business tycoon Dave Checketts, who already owns a National Hockey League franchise.

Any sale to the Checketts/Limbaugh group must be approved by three-quarters of the NFL's 32 teams and it has already been met with opposition from players such as Donovan McNabb.

ESPN said according to its sources Checketts now realizes that if he is to be successful he has to drop Limbaugh.

Speaking on his syndicated radio show on Wednesday, Limbaugh still held out hope.

"I am not even thinking of exiting," Limbaugh was reported by ESPN as saying. "I am not a caver.

"Pioneers take arrows. We are pioneers. It is a sad thing but our country 200 years old now needs pioneers all over again, but we do."

Methinks we need more than pioneers. Much more.

I find it incredulous that race-baiters and race-pimps have been able to successfully lead the charge to derail a man's plans to achieve his dreams.

The America we once knew is no more. Or nearly so.

Do you have any idea how many minds, eyes, and/or wallets the NFL controls? The NFL is a gaming device and so I accept your bet.

BTW, regarding your Rush stats; don't confuse listeners with fans. Most cities have two simultaneous talk radio choices, both likely syndicated by right/ center-right entities. Talk radio listeners learn to suck up that fact in lieu of the even more retarded musical format offerings.

Personally, John Gibson beats Rush in my tiny demographic. Other winners are Savage, and the excellent Brian and the Judge.

Limbaugh's words are right there in the article linked above, see the last three paragraphs.

Surely you read the article before you spouted off -- since all of the right wing bloggers are avoiding quoting Limbaugh in their rants -- surely you're not just another right wing idiot who follow the crowd like some dumb ass?

just wondering...

Limbaugh, a conservative supporter of former US president George W. Bush and critic of current US President Barack Obama, was forced to resign from an ESPN NFL television job in 2003 after comments about Philadelphia's McNabb.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL," said Limbaugh at the time. "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well."

Limbaugh also described NFL games as looking like a gang fight without weapons.

Yeah, professional NFL athletes are just like gang members... if you are a fat-headed, drug-addicted loud mouthed bigot like Limbaugh.

There are other quotes out there, some of them disputed, but all along the same lines.

NY Times vs. Sullivan sets the standard for defamation cases of public people with the term

"actual malice" that the statement was made with knowledge of its falsity or with reckless disregard of whether it was true or false.

Many of the quotes attributed to Rush are obviously poorly sourced. The media is not free to quote somebody falsely. They have a duty to verify the quotes they attribute to somebody. Attributing inceniary quotes whose only provenence is some guy named Cobra, starts falling into the realm of reckless disregard for the truth.

From a <a href="http://www.... (Below threshold)
Rick:

From a Jeff Jacoby column back in October of 2003:

Limbaugh charged the media, in other words, with practicing a kind of affirmative action toward McNabb -- holding him to a lesser standard of excellence than white quarterbacks would be held to. If he had been talking about the University of Michigan's admission policies, or about Jayson Blair's career at The New York Times, nobody would have raised an eyebrow. But he said it about professional football, and for that he is being denounced as a vile bigot.

The uproar started with the Philadelphia sportswriters, but by Wednesday even presidential candidates were calling for Limbaugh's head. Wesley Clark condemned his "hateful and ignorant speech" and said he "should be fired immediately." Howard Dean labeled his remark "absurd and offensive." Al Sharpton scheduled a news conference, saying he would call for a national boycott if Limbaugh weren't fired.
The NAACP weighed in, too. In a press release on Wednesday, the organization's president, Kweisi Mfume, demanded that ESPN fire Limbaugh "or at the very least, provide an opposing point of view."
Apparently, Mfume didn't know that ESPN had provided an opposing point of view -- in the person of fellow "NFL Countdown" commentator Tom Jackson, who challenged Limbaugh's description of McNabb as soon as it was uttered.
"Rush," Jackson protested, "somebody went to those championship games. Somebody went to those pro bowls. Somebody made those plays. . . He has been a very effective quarterback for this football team over the last two or three years." Two other members of the panel, Chris Berman and Steve Young, agreed.
But not everyone on the show thought Limbaugh was off-base. Michael Irvin listened to the colloquy, then offered a succinct opinion: "Rush has a point."
Somehow, none of Limbaugh's on-air colleagues noticed that his comment about McNabb was "hateful and ignorant." Jackson, who is black, took him to task, but only over his assessment of McNabb's football skills. Irvin, who is also black, agreed with Limbaugh! How was it that no one on the ESPN lineup noticed Limbaugh's outrageous breach of decency? How could they have kept silent about something so grossly racist?
Answer: Because it wasn't racist.

The CNN quotes are very much what this was about because they were put front and center and they were run on other networks as well. They are far more explicitly racist and were used to color his real comments as being far worse than they really were. CNN and other media outlets ginned up protest against him based on poorly sourced and biased reportage. They could have run with well sourced material and still had a good story, but they chose instead to run with anonymously sourced, defamatory misquotes that they have had to do a walk back on.

Those quotes were far more incendiary and it was the day after they were put out in the media that this blew up.

Your trying to avoid them is the issue. You still have not backed down off of those.
