My attitude towards the death penalty has evolved over the years. Now, while I believe the state has the sovereign right to exact this punishment, I think it must be reserved for the most egregious acts.
These would include those of callous cruelty, premeditation, and consciousness of guilt. All of these conditions are satisfied in the case of John Allen Muhammad.
He selected victims of opportunity whom he had never even met, and meted out death to them without hesitation. He planned his attacks carefully to maximize the terror they caused and his own chances for escape. He trained his young liege as the shooter in an attempt to avoid culpability.
If John Allen Muhammad did not deserve his sentence, no rational death penalty can ever be applied. But he did deserve it, beyond any doubt. May God have mercy upon his soul.

#15. For years, Ive though they should bring back stoning. Clearly life in prison, or the slim possibility of execution isnt a sufficient deterrent.
Maybe the victims family, etc all lining up at 60 feet 6 inches might be cause for concern before killing indiscriminately.
