Help Wanted: Commander In Chief

So, what does President Obama think about our military? We have an answer -- "not much."

And that is not a euphemism for "he has a low opinion of them." It means "he doesn't think about them much at all."

Yesterday, President Obama gave a stirring speech at the memorial service for those killed and wounded at Fort Hood last week. Assuming the occasional presidential duty as Mourner In Chief, he did quite well.

Which should have come as no great surprise. After all, he had plenty of time to prepare his speech and have it loaded into his TelePrompter.

Far, far more revealing was his initial reaction to the shooting.

President Obama was getting ready to address the Tribal Nations Conference when he was given word of the shooting. Traditionally, when events of this magnitude happen, the president mentions them first -- often including a request for a moment of silence or prayer -- and then they go on with their prepared remarks.

Not this time. No, President Obama first had to give a "shout out" to the attendees, followed by a remarkably careless insult to the entire military. In attendance was Dr. Joe Medicine Crow. Earlier this year, President Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- the nation's highest civilian award. Instead, Obama referred to Crow holding the Congressional Medal of Honor -- the nation's highest military award, given in recognition for only the highest acts of valor. (It's become almost mandatory that it be posthumous.) For all Dr. Medicine Crow has done, it was all done as a civilian.

And then President Obama spoke on behalf of those shot in Fort Hood.

Over the weekend, Obama's proxies continued the insults. His National Security Advisor went to the Middle East to assure folks there that our top priority would not be in identifying the causes of the rampage or preventing future ones, but in making sure that other Muslims or Islam itself would not be held to blame for the shooting. Meanwhile, the Army Chief of Staff spoke out about the shooting, saying that the worst possible consequence would not be the deaths of more Americans, or the loss of cohesiveness as troops find they cannot bring themselves to trust and rely upon each other, but the danger to "diversity" within the armed services.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, President Obama skipped off to Camp David. Instead, it fell to former President George W. Bush and his wife to visit with the wounded (in what was supposed to have been a secret visit)

That all served as icing on the cake to how President Obama is handling the situation in Afghanistan. He's dithered for months on whether or not to implement the strategy crafted by his hand-picked commander in the field, even avoiding meetings with General McChrystal, while finding plenty of time to campaign for candidates around the nation. The troops there know one of the fundamental truths of warfare is that a decision made now -- even a wrong one -- is almost always better than the perfect decision made too late. And they are the ones who are fighting and dying while Obama dithers, trying to find the perfect political decision.

Mr. President, it's time to -- as my mother used to say -- "shit or get off the pot."

You wanted the job, sir. You fought for it. Being Commander In Chief might not be your cup of tea (you'd rather be Community Organizer In Chief, which has no real, defined responsibilities), but you accepted it as part and parcel of the duties you swore an oath to uphold. Show them the respect they are due. Honor them when they suffer. Respect their traditions and customs. Do not denigrate their awards and their deeds.

Our military is among the most loyal in the world -- partly because their loyalty isn't to the government or the leadership, but the Constitution. And that Constitution (with the ideals it embodies) commands them to give that loyalty to those who have also sworn oaths to it and rightfully taken office to defend it.

Loyalty is a two-way street, Mr. President. Their loyalty to you -- as president and commander in chief -- is absolute. You owe them the same.

And god knows they deserve it.

On this day --- the eleventh day of the eleventh month -- above all others.

Currently the General says we don't have enough troops to do that. So give him the damn troops!

If Obama does not believe in this war then STOP FIGHTING IT and bring them home. How fricking hard is that? The conservatives would much rather "lose" this war than see soldiers die because they don't have the resources needed to win.

Bush got us into Afganistan, the left constantly held up Afganistan as THE WAR THAT MUST BE WON. They demonized Bush for fighting in Iraq instead of Afganistan and called Agstn the "Good War".

And, rightfully, nobody blamed the mercenary community, the NRA, Irish Catholics, or decorated veterans for his actions. Maybe they did blame Jerry Falwell, but he was a radical, hate-filled cleric so it's not entirely unreasonable. Jerry Falwell never spoke for Christianity, the same way Osama bin Laden does not speak for Islam.

So, Major Hasan is to Islam, as Timothy McVeigh is to white Christian veterans: an exception, from which it would be ignorant, immoral, and bigoted to extrapolate any generalizations.

Chip: why should Muslims have to denounce a single fucked-up Muslim's actions? And as for those among them who simultaneously condemn his actions (half-heartedly) while demanding some degree of 'understanding', they're idiots at best, and bad people at worst. But are they idiots because they are Muslims, or are they idiots because they live in a backwards society and have been conditioned to blame "the West" for every shitty thing that has happened to them, rather than their own political and spiritual leaders?

And Chip, in the U.S., half a million people died of cancer last year and over 10,000 were killed by drunk drivers and I don't remember seeing any conservatives denouncing cancer or drunk driving. Probably because it goes without saying that these are horrible things. On the same note, there are no liberals who think the Ft. Hood massacre is a good thing, so just because you don't see a shitload of liberal blogs explicitly stating that murder is bad--because in this day and age, it does go without saying!--doesn't mean that liberals are tacitly alright with what Maj. Hasan did to all of those people. Otherwise you're establishing a threshold of judgement such that a certain proportion within every identifiable group must denounce every bad thing that ever happens, else they be assumed to tacitly endorse these bad things. And that would be really dumb and a waste of everyone's time.

WiddleWanker, quit drinking paint and reading blogs. If you seriously believe that Muslims are "the enemy"--all 1.5 billion of them--then you should probably go live in a bunker because the world is far too dangerous for a bed-wetting paranoiac such as yourself.

Because it's complicated. What with the constantly shifting nature of the people we're fighting with and against and the fact that our allies are, in many cases, no better than the scumbags we're fighting against. not to mention the fact that in 8 years of fighting, we've achieved less than nothing. Eh? You mean his presidential campaign? Whether you do or not, the fact is that Afghanistan is less important right now than domestic issues. You may have noticed that the economy's, like, broken. Not much point in fighting a war against terror if the country you're trying to protect is essentially completely economically fucked. Wars cost money too, you know.

This is just childish. What the hell do you know about what Obama thinks or cares about the military? That he doesn't just want to throw thousands of troops at an intractable problem, with some, possibly many, of them inevitably dying could suggest that he cares a lot more than you do.

"INTRACTABLE PROBLEM??"

Or, He cares about His stupid ass GETTIN RESELECTED!!

Grow a brain idiot!

"FIrst Canadian Place"? Do ... (Below threshold)
hyperbolist:

"FIrst Canadian Place"? Do you mean the CN Tower? It's the tallest building in all of the Americas and Europe, Marc, not just Canada. Woo! IN YOUR FACE SEARS TOWER. But eat shit, big towers in Dubai and Kuala Lumpur!

And really, Marc, I have a lot of friends in NYC and none of them--liberals--spend any of their precious time worrying about Islamic terrorists. All of the pants-peeing has been taking place in fly-over country for the past eight years and not New York, where people have the cajones to not let the terrorists win by being terrified--with the notable exception of Rudy Ghouliani, of course.

Remember on 9/11, when everyone was a New Yorker for about fifteen minutes? Then everyone went back to hating them for being elitist coastal anti-war liberals and (for Falwell, Dobson, Robertson et al) the wrong kind of Jews. But that was a pretty wild fifteen minutes!

Anyway, yeah, 9/11 was awful and might happen again, but we do know for certain that this year a half million Americans will die of cancer and if you understand basic arithmetic, you aren't wasting your time thinking about hypothetical terrorist attacks. Go get a check-up, and then go outside and play catch with your kids. Or borrow someone else's kids. Whatever.

Hyperbolist, Do you ... (Below threshold)

Hyperbolist,
Do you know the leading cause of death?
It's birth.
As to your accusation of fly over country hating
any one on the left or wrong coast, where are your sources to back up this accusation?
Disagreeing is not hatred.

Hey, hyper, I guess all you... (Below threshold)

Hey, hyper, I guess all your friends in NYC were sleeping in a couple of months ago when the city was buzzed by Air Force One...

Obama gave those that were up and about a good reminder of 9/11 that day.

Nice strawman Hyper, ... (Below threshold)
Chip:

Nice strawman Hyper,

Why, I remember exactly what I was doing the day two drunk pilots flew their planes into the World Trade Center towers, and then of course that terrible day when cancer walked into an army base and killed 13 people, and lest we forget the day the world trade center got bombed by Heart Disease.

Yeah, nice argument. /sarc

Chip: if you were to ration... (Below threshold)
hyperbolist:

Chip: if you were to rationally index your worries in terms of likelihood of harming you or your loved ones, terrorism would be in the neighbourhood of lightning strikes.

But I guess your point is that you don't want to be rational about terrorism because you insist on being terrorized. Way to make it easy for the bad guys, buddy!

On the contrary Hyper, I'm ... (Below threshold)
Chip:

On the contrary Hyper, I'm not worried necessarily for me and mine but for any and everyone affected by terrorism. I'd much rather meet the threat head on and not marginalize it to the "nuisance" that you wish it were. I'd rather make hard fro them to be able to find holes to crawl into. To put your cancer analogy to it. I'd love to be able to kill every cell. If liberals would seek to fight terrorism the way they are fighting conservatism then think of the good that could possibly come of it. Eh what am I thinking, liberals fight? Yeah right, it's they that want to take guns away from law abiding citizens, and chisel our military down, but that's a whole other argument.
