I'm all for excoriating obama for bowing before a Saudi king, commonly called and Oil Tick, but Jesus Christ on a PoGo Stick.
Are some of you people so isolated from reality that bowing in Japanese society is unheard of? The practice is endemic to the Japanese.
A friggin' Sushi or pizza delivery boy exchanges bows with his customer for Christ sake why shouldn't obama follow suit?

You're right - in Japan bowing is endemic to the culture. And there's a radical difference in the bow you give to a subordinate, to an equal, and to a superior.
That ain't no 15 degree bow. That's not a 45 degree bow. That's pretty much a 90 degree bow, the position someone very much inferior would take.Who the hell is advising him on this shit, anyway?

I'm far more concerned about words spoken while in Asia than his or someone's inability to understand the proper protocol when in Japan.

Then you should know that the depth and length of time you hold the bow IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT. ESPECIALLY when you bow to the Emperor.
This is not a bow amongst equals. This was a definite inferior-to-superior bow. Furthermore, as equals you ALWAYS keep your head up and looking at the person you bow at...unless you are showing your subservience.
Even Mr Miyagi said about the bow: "Always look eye!"
This is not the equivalent of shaking hands, this was the equivalent of getting down on your knees and kissing the ring on his finger.

Obama has this thing about kissing and making up with the Japs.
He recently apologized to them for having them suffer through the embarrassment of having to surrender at the end of WWII. IN PUBLIC, on a US battleship, no less, and the press actually TOOK PICTURES, horrors, to perpetuate the shame.
When asked recently about the A-bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he wanted so much to tell the Japs what bad people the Americans have been and still are and he is the only one who can correct this. He also told the Japs our souls will be consigned to wander in the universe in a rudderless spaceship.

Etiquette for bows between equals:
* Look the other person in the eye (Obama didn't)
* Bows are reciprocated (Akihito did not bow)
* Either bow OR shake hands -- to do both simultaneously is gauche
Also, when exchanging presents, it's a good idea to remember that DVDs for one region will not work in players for other regions.

I lived in Japan for years. Bowing is a fine art that the conditioned eye can judge to a millimeter. My eye says this is a bow of obedience that a wife would give to her husband. I'm sure this photo caused a lot of laughter in Japan. In the 70s, the Japanese had a TV show where they made fun of western .. American.. husbands who learned to speak Japanese from their wives. The Japanese think it is a hoot when others break the cultural form.

And there is your mistake. The Emperor is an Emperor. Obama is an incompetent affirmative action hack. They are NOT equals.
On the other hand, I think he did this on purpose.
