The global warming house of cards is on the verge of collapse

So much for peer review:

cards_image.jpg

SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

The UEA's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation.

The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals -- stored on paper and magnetic tape -- were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building.

The admission follows the leaking of a thousand private emails sent and received by Professor Phil Jones, the CRU's director. In them he discusses thwarting climate sceptics seeking access to such data.

In a statement on its website, the CRU said: "We do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (quality controlled and homogenised) data."

Homogenised data eh?

Dictionary.com provides the definition for those wondering:

to make uniform or similar, as in composition or function

In other words, homogenised to tell a story that otherwise isn't there.

It's time for investigations... it's time to follow the money... it's time for the inconvenient truth to smack the likes of Al Gore upside his fat head.

It's past time.

Not so much a "conspiracy" at first, more a "what a neat idea, we'll slop together some computer models and show how this is happening," then "the computer models aren't giving us the results we need, but since we're Really Really Certain this is right, we'll fiddle with them a bit," and finally a "hey, these models aren't predicting anything correctly, we screwed up the last couple of decades of research - sweep it under the rug and hope nobody notices."

Meanwhile, folks like yourself, who have bought into the whole Global Warming religion? They get to spend the next few months (or years) trying to deny that they bought into something that didn't really exist, and will swerve between "you deniers were bought off by Big Oil" and "you people are all just crazy because you don't follow the Revealed Truth of Global Warmosity!"

Of course, in a decade or so, you'll be trying to pretend you never believed in Global Warming, and will be trying to make snarky comments about the next big failure of the left, pretending that it's all the Other Guys' Fault.

It is just utterly amazing how the lamestream media continues to try to cover up this story. Those that have even ventured to talk about it are doing their utmost to downplay the significance of what we have learned so far. These are the same people who used to concoct stories out of whole cloth to smear the Bush Administration but now when real criminal and unethical activities have been exposed that could hurt the side they openly support they act as if all their senses have taken leave or something. If they were even slightly concerned that their lack of objectivity and honesty may have been compromised by their painfully obvious cheerleading for Obama and it was hurting their perception as an honest broker to the public here is their chance to redeem themselves but it seems clear that they are passing on this golden opportunity as well. When a lot of these media outlets such as cable networks, newspapers and magazines shut their doors because their viewership or circulation dries up I will shed not one single tear for any of these people. Where are the whistleblowers inside these organizations? Do they make their employees sign some loyalty pact or something before they get offered a job?

Mac Lorry:

Once again the answer to the lost data is to insist on complete transparence in the science underpinning AGW. The key is to force the UN to review its IPCC's fourth assessment such that all the data and metadata are made public. Such a rule important data will never be lost again.

Any study, graph, chart, or temperature reconstruction for which the data and metadata can't be made public, for whatever reason, should be dropped from the revised IPCC assessment. The likely result is that the IPCC's fourth assessment will show a nearly flat temperature record with little or any relation to atmospheric CO2 levels. With such an IPCC fourth assessment the EPA loses any basis for regulating carbon as a pollutant and politicians all over the world lose any political cover for imposing any type of carbon regulation.

The call for transparency in government, which the UN's IPCC is, has far more public appeal and is far harder for climate spin artists to worm their way out from under. Lets not expend the energy of this crises trying to penetrated the thick armor these establishment scientists have erected, but rather use it to out flank them by forcing them to do the right thing, which is to publish all their data and metadata, or sit quiet as the rest of the world reviews the scientific underpinnings of AGW.

If the goal is the truth who will be able to stand in the way.

Patrick:

I think that one of the most objectionable aspects of the whole AGW scam was that people who did not buy into their beliefs were labeled "deniers" as if their refusal to believe that man was responsible for the changing climate was on par with people who did not believe that the Holocaust actually happened. James Delingpole said it best for me in his book "Welcome to Obamaland" when he said (and I am paraphrasing a bit here) that it was ludicrous for people to think that a guy who watches "An Inconvenient Truth" and decides on balance that it ia a pile of crap deserves the same contempt as a person who refuses to believe that Hitler murdered six million Jews despite all the evidence of Auschwitz and Treblinka.

Now we have this revelation from the "scientists" at the University of East Anglia that they threw away much of the raw temperature data upon which they made their dire predictions. There is no logical explanation for this blatantly dishonest act and when you consider that there people did this "scientific" research using public funds I think they should face criminal charges. You cannot accept ANYTHING these people say as the truth anymore because there is no way now to independently verify their claims. There needs to be an extensive investigation of this entire matter and they need to be compelled to testify before Congress or in a court of law. The conference in Copenhagen needs to be cancelled before actions are taken and treaties signed and if it is not than those people who sign these agreements need to be held to the same account as those who have fraudulently misled the general public. They are willfully ignoring these disgraceful acts and they must pay for their outright negligence and unwillingness to get to the bottom of this scam - perhaps the biggest in the history of science.

There's a well established legal principle called "fruit of the poisonous tree", and it is pivotal. It applies directly to the scientific method.

If the original data cannot be produced and *independently* proven, all derivative conclusions based on it is, in a word, worthless. "Independently" requires that the original data and all subsequent smoothing, fudging, and weighting be regenerated -- from scratch -- by qualified scientists having absolutely no previous contact with the original analysis. As far as I'm concerned, anybody with an advanced degree in Climate Science should be considered untrustworthy.

Considering the economic impact of Global Warming Legislation on people around the world, my bullshit meter is pegged. I'm not having any of it.

Bobdog:

I think your use of the legal principle "fruit of the poisonous tree" is particularly relevant in this case. As in a criminal case where tainted evidence (either through careless or willful negligence) is discarded and the inference drawn by that evidence is stricken from the record the same standard should be used here. Since the e-mails indicate that these guys massaged the numbers to get the results they wanted and since they discarded the original source data the only logical thing to do is throw out all their predictions and assertions because there is no way we can ever trust the things they have been telling us. What else could we possibly do really?

I apologize for being a bit off topic here but thinking about this global warming cult and the Obama cult I have decided that humans are inherently religious beings. Oh, I know there are the so called atheists and their anathema of religion (at least in this country) seems to be politely directed at discrediting Christianity. Yet of those people I know who are atheists they still seem to demonstrate a piety for these liberal sects like Obama himself or global warming with Al Gore being the prophet of that message. I get some idea of how I amuse them being a (less than perfect) Christian, but it's nice to see they have their false gods also. I guess it's time for them to return to the wilderness.

They had the data, destroyed the original data when they moved (which is not exactly good procedure) and their 'adjustments' to the original data seem to be rather difficult to replicate - not to mention their programs are a mess of code that had some rather interesting modifications done to the data on the fly. And they were also insisting that that the data was WRONG, because it wasn't matching their models.

Climate change data dumped - Times Online####

Honestly, man, how far off from 4 does the simple addition of 2+2 have to be for you to concede there's something wrong?

1. They buggered the original data they were using.

2. Their code adjusted the data to conform to a predetermined output.

3. They were not open to peer review, except from 'peers' who were carefully selected to be in agreement with their premise in the first place.

4. The information they supplied was the basis of economic decisions worth trillions of dollars - yet they would not release their raw data, their adjusted data, their programs, or their unedited conclusions to other scientists for replication.

Yeah, spend a year or two ordering up the data that they should have kept in the first place. What part of the scientific method isn't clear to you, Lil' Troll? You don't destroy your primary data records, even if you CAN reproduce them (with a lot of work) - and you damn sure don't hide that you DID that until you're called out on it!

And Al Gore's saying there's no time to delay? Gotta pass the legislation now! No time to waste? Hmmm - is HE starting to think the scam's blown?

Well, the raw data from New Zealand's in - whoopsie...

Straight away you can see there's no slope--either up or down. The temperatures are remarkably constant way back to the 1850s. Of course, the temperature still varies from year to year, but the trend stays level--statistically insignificant at 0.06°C per century since 1850.
Pull the other one, bub - it's got bells on it. You're so damn gullible, and apparently so embarrased about it, you can't admit you've been scammed.
What did we find? First, the station histories are unremarkable. There are no reasons for any large corrections. But we were astonished to find that strong adjustments have indeed been made.

About half the adjustments actually created a warming trend where none existed; the other half greatly exaggerated existing warming. All the adjustments increased or even created a warming trend, with only one (Dunedin) going the other way and slightly reducing the original trend.

The shocking truth is that the oldest readings have been cranked way down and later readings artificially lifted to give a false impression of warming, as documented below. There is nothing in the station histories to warrant these adjustments and to date Dr Salinger and NIWA have not revealed why they did this.

One station, Hokitika, had its early temperatures reduced by a huge 1.3°C, creating strong warming from a mild cooling, yet there's no apparent reason for it.
It's okay to be wrong, SD, and change your mind when faced with evidence that shows your beliefs are in error. It's not okay to stick your fingers in your ears and go "It's really getting hotter! It's getting hotter! It's GOT to be getting hotter! Mann, Hansen and Gore can't be wrong!"
