More Updates on the 4 policemen slain in Lakewood, WA

Here is new information since the last report on Wizbang. Living in the Seattle area, I've been glued to this page, the Lights and Sirens blog of the Tacoma News Tribune in Tacoma, WA for the most up to date information. The perpetrator is still on the loose. My son at the University of Washington received a text message earlier today that Maurice Clemmons was seen getting off a bus near the University Medical Center at 7:00 am this morning.

And there is a Willie Horton aspect to the story, as this guy was once in jail in Arkansas. According to the Seattle Times:

Documents released this morning by the Arkansas Parole Board show police slaying suspect Maurice Clemmons was supposed to remain in prison there until at least 2015, but won his release by claiming he'd changed while behind bars.

Clemmons' appeal for clemency was granted in May 2000 by then-Gov. Mike Huckabee, who commuted Clemmons sentence and made him immediately eligible for parole.

Clemmons wrote in an appeal to Huckabee that he'd been sent to prison after an extended crime spree that started in 1989 when he was a teenager -- and that he was a different person now.

Mike Huckabeee put out this message to respond:
"The senseless and savage execution of police officers in Washington State has saddened the nation, and early reports indicate that a person of interest is a repeat offender who once lived in Arkansas and was wanted on outstanding warrants here and Washington State. The murder of any individual is profound tragedy, but the murder of a police officer is the worst of all murders in that it is an assault on every citizen and the laws we live within.

Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State. He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990, making him parole eligible and was paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him. It appears that he has continued to have a string of criminal and psychotic behavior but was not kept incarcerated by either state. This is a horrible and tragic event and if found and convicted the offender should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are and should be with the families of those honorable, brave, and heroic police officers."

The victims have been identified:

CNN is reporting that he thought he was Jesus and could fly:

In recent months, Clemmons has displayed increasingly erratic behavior, the Seattle Times reported. In May, he punched a sheriff's deputy in the face, the paper said.

In another incident, he had relatives undress, telling them families need to be "naked for at least five minutes on Sunday," the newspaper said, citing a sheriff's department incident report.

Clemmons also believed he was Jesus and could fly, a deputy wrote, based on conversations with family members.

Police have left the scene @2:00 pm, now looking for wife's car, per twitter:Police searching for green '97 Mazda Millenia w/ WA license plate 208-SSX. Reg'd to Clemmons' wife.

Police no longer looking for this car, since it was sold 2 months ago. Ok.

Now they are looking in "The Jungle", a hilly, overgrown area just East of I-5 at 13th and Lander, well known as an area frequented by the homeless.

Now setting up containment near 13th and Lander, where police reporting shoeprints leading towards a house with an open door. Following #WAShooting on twitter now.

Final update: They got him. From Seattle Crime Report:

Update 4:30 AM: A region-wide manhunt for the suspected killer of four Lakewood police officers finally came to an end Tuesday morning--not under the spotlights of police helicopters in a major police operation, but after an apparent chance encounter between a patrol officer and murder suspect Maurice Clemmons in South Seattle.

Assistant police chief Jim Pugel says a lone patrol officer spotted a stolen vehicle left running in the 4400 block of S Kenyon this morning and began examining the vehicle. As he was doing so, Pugel says, Clemmons approached him from behind. The officer, a seven year veteran of the department, ordered Clemmons to stop and show his hands. Pugel says Clemmons ran. The officer fired several rounds, fatally wounding Clemmons.

According to police, Clemmons was carrying a gun taken from one of the Lakewood police officers killed Sunday morning.

Again, I don't want to sound like I'm defending Mike Huckabee -- but, just like it was irresponsible to blame the entirety of the Katrina disaster on President Bush, it would also be irresponsible to pin sole responsibility for these murders on Mike Huckabee. Governors don't just randomly pick felons out of a hat and commute their sentences or pardon them. There is a process whereby offenders are recommended for clemency by the state parole board.

Civil rights groups and other private organizations also lobby extensively to have the sentences of minority offenders reduced. Social justice organizations routinely claim that minorities are unfairly singled out for arrest and given unduly harsh sentences if convicted of crimes. Commutation of those sentences, therefore, is "justice."

It will be interesting to learn the entire back-story of Clemmons and his association with the criminal justice system, both in Arkansas and in Washington. Before it's all over I think a lot of people will have something to answer for.

I haven't been following the story but his belief that he's Jesus strongly implies a religious fixation to his delusion.

That gives rise to the SPECULATION that his request for parole and assurance that he had fundamentally changed centered around a Christian religious conversion. If so, presumably the parole board would have attempted to ascertain the veracity of that assertion and recommended him for Executive clemency. Given Huckabee's beliefs and former history as a pastor, I would think that Christian conversion is a claim that Huckabee would find particularly persuasive.

Huckabee is toast as a presidential candidate. Not just this commutation, but the fact that he can't raise money in a presidential campaign. I heard him on Fox News Sunday saying that was the issue keeping him out of 2012. http://podcasts.foxnews.com/podcasts/112909_fns_podcast_128.mp3

Huckabee could play the innocent act if this were a one-off. It is hardly that, though. The man had a long and consistent history of commutations and pardons over the strong objections of prosecutors and victims, and many went on to commit more crimes.

Neither is it completely honest to spread the blame around to the Arkansas Parole Board. This body reacted to the Governor's actions, and several members were his appointees. Huckabee also points fingers at Washington state's system. NOTICE, though, that he NEVER overtly accepts any responsibility himself.

He is a liar, a hypocrite, and a jackass. We can be thankful that this deceiving, tax-raising criminal coddler will never be elected President or Vice President.

Go take a long walk off a short pier, Huck!

Arkansas Leader 2004

Several prosecutors around the state are upset with Gov. Huckabee for grant- ing clemency to violent criminals, but he is blaming the prosecutors for often not seeking the maximum penalty and keeping felons locked up longer.

Until now, Huckabee has refused to comment on his controversial policy of making violent prisoners eligible for parole- they include murderers, armed robbers and rapists, who often return to a life of crime after they're freed - but in a statement to The Leader this week, he lashed out at prosecutors for not doing more to keep prisoners behind bars - to which Pulaski County Prosecuting Attor-ney

Larry Jegley had this response: "That's a load of baloney."

"I'm offended as a prosecutor and as a citizen. He can blame the prosecutors, but ultimately he's the man responsible," Jegley says. "He's the only one who can sign on the dotted line.

My Emphasis

There was a failure in the system alright, and it starts with Mike Huckabee.

Now he is 'Pass the Buckaby' Huckabee. The best defense he can mount is 'other people did it too!' as though that serves as justification for his actions.

To All the Gunworshippers Out There,

Well, four more martyrs for your beloved Second Amendment! You must feel wonderful, and it must be great favoring property rights over other people's right to live, in the grand conservative tradition.

How often does this kind of murderous rampage shit happen in Japan, where guns have been outlawed for years and years, rendering the society there almost entirely gun-free? Why is the murder rate several times higher in the U.S. than in Japan, and notably higher than that for Western Europe?

If guns are such wonderful self-defense items, why would the cops' guns prove so useless for them? Could it possibly be that the armed criminal, having foreknowledge that a crime is about to be committed, draws and shoots his weapon first, and your gun ain't doing no damn good if it's in a holster or hidden somewhere?

Strange that some of you gunworshippers undoubtedly call yourself "pro-life." Well, if no one has a gun, no one gets murdered by a gun -- so simple a concept, but weirdly beyond the capacity of the pro-life conservatives to understand.

Jim Addison and Jeff Blogworthy, you're both right, Huckabee looks like a weasel for completely omitting any reference to his part in putting Clemmons back on the street. There were a lot of failures, but one of them plainly was Huckabee's. He should man-up and take responsibility for it.

As for this ex-felon, guess HE OBEYED ALL THE GUN LAWS, didn't he? So in your world, we just need to pass a few more laws?

As I sit watching the evening news, a top story involves the left's continuing 'War on Christmas' which is an extension of the war on Christ. Since at least the 1950's leftists have been working tirelessly to destroy our culture, our traditions, besmirch our great country, and convince us that the concept of morality itself is a false construct of our imaginations. There is no coming judgment or cosmic accountability and life has no meaning.

In fact, you do everything you can to attack the concept of accountability in this life, much less the next. Note that you blame the very atrocity at hand on the impersonal force of the second amendment rather than an evil human being.

You are a destroyer of the human spirit. You subsidize fatherless children and poverty. You enslave people in little government projects like animals and punish all attempts at success. You devalue human life by killing innocents and coddling criminals. You drug our children at the earliest opportunity.

In short, leftists manufacture sociopaths. Congratulations yourself. I hope you're happy with the results of the last 60 years of leftist destruction of all that is sacred you sanctimonious prick.

Jim Addison:

Michael, it goes beyond Huckabee's failure to note his role at all. He was central to the practice in Arkansas, with appointment power over those making the recommendations to him and the Parole Board members (over time).

During Huckabee's tenure as Governor, more felons were released by gubernatorial clemency in Arkansas than in the SIX neighboring states (Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, and Alabama) COMBINED! This cannot be ascribed to the normal workings of third parties, it was a defining practice of the Huckabee Administration.

The fact remains that it was only by Mike Huckabee's commutation of sentence that this man was able to commit the crimes he allegedly has over the years, including this massacre, because if not for Huckabee's action, he would still be in prison in Arkansas today.

In this light, Huckabee's failure to take the slightest personal responsibility can be seen in its truth, as a craven act of an unscrupulous coward eager to protect his own reputation at the expense of those who did his direct bidding, and others.

I wouldn't have dinner with the SOB if he was buying (as painful as that is for me to say), much less see him in any position of power ever again.

Huckabee will do his best to slither off the hook for his release of this sub-human. He must NOT get away with it. In his zeal to placate typically left-wing, bleeding heart parole boards, he is thoroughly complicit in these murders. Huckabee has always been a RINO at best, playing the conservative whenever and wherever it suited his needs. This disgraceful, gutless demonstration of what a weak sister he truly is should destroy his aspirations for the White House. Naturally the Steele/Gingrich country club higher ups in the party will rush to his defense. But actual Americans must NOT let them get by with it.
