Stop the Presses! Barack Obama is *gasp* Tired!

If a Martian landed in America and read this article, he'd think Barack Obama's presidency was the first one in the history of the Republic to encounter any difficulties:

After a sleepless, overnight flight to Oslo to accept the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this month, President Barack Obama made a not altogether surprising admission. He was tired.

Who could blame him? The president was on his ninth foreign trip to his 21st country; he added a 10th trip the following week. The year had been bookended by the two most intense periods of his young presidency -- the early decisions to bail out the nation's banks and automobile industry, steps the president deemed unpopular but necessary, and his December orders to deploy 30,000 additional U.S. troops to fight the war in Afghanistan.

Throw in an unemployment rate in the double-digits, a health care bill still stuck on Capitol Hill, and last-minute negotiations on a global climate change agreement, and aides say it's no secret that the president is tired, and looking forward to recharging during his year-end family vacation in Hawaii.

Obama himself has been candid about the pressures of being president during what he has called an "extraordinary year."

"You have a convergence of factors that have made this a difficult year not so much for me but for the American people," he said in an interview with CBS News last month. "Absolutely that weighs on me."

Both the author of this piece and the president himself sound surprised at the realization that being president is a difficult, stressful, and harrowing job. Where did Obama get the idea that being President of the United States was going to be easy? Didn't the associated descriptor "Leader of the Free World" clue him in to the reality that being president has immense responsibilities?

Yes, this job is very difficult and stressful, which is why every man who held it before him left the position looking significantly older than when he began. One can deduce from the president's comments that he didn't notice this pattern.

There's an aphorism that Mr. Obama might want to keep in mind next time: if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

What exactly has he done to become 'tired'? All of the crafting of the legislation was done by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. He has spent most of his time giving speeches about himself and throwing parties for himself.

I have heard the same complaints from people who are way in over their head at their position. Sometimes they are the owners of the company or a major share holder or a relative of the owner. They are tired because they do not manage their time properly or their employees time. Hence they are just poor managers. A title does not make a good manager. A poor manager does not delegate and when he does he finds another poor manager like himself. This compounds his problem because, when they screw up, and they always do, he has to jump in and either throw them under the bus or take more of their responsibilities on themselves. A poor manager never admits he made a bad decision and usually blames everyone else and rarely changes course. This is what some of us saw in "O" way before the election. He is worse than we thought.

For another individual to put in the same amount of effort and meet with success is invigorating. For all of his self-proclaimed heroic efforts Obama has come up so short on both domestic and foreign policy. He owns the healthcare debacle but as hermie says Obama has no personal experience on moving major legislation so he ends up leaving it in the hands of Pelosi and Reid who as far as I am concerned make him look worse. Foreign leaders don't take him seriously. This lack of success would indeed exhaust anyone. I see the Obama ad ministrationas an evolving Shakespearean tragedy. He is much like Hamlet. Lack of resolve and therefore he is considered weak. He gets peevish because the world does not meet his expectations. Yes, I understand why he is tired. Failure and uncertainty are exhausting.

What did the press (Gannett) have to say at the end of Dec 2001 (Dec 23) about Bush (who had that whole pesky 9-11 thing to deal with during his first year and was also likely tired)?

Bush's ability to maintain a high level of public support over more than three months -- 86 percent in the latest USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll -- suggests the public appreciates him for more than just the way he has conducted the war.

It seems many Americans who weren't quite sure of his leadership ability before Sept. 11 have been impressed with how he has performed under fire.

His work to assemble and nurture an international coalition, command the U.S. military, make bold decisions and stick to them, comfort the families of victims and rally the American people have created a human bond with the citizenry. That bond has helped spawn a spirit of national unity, resolve and can-do optimism, even in the face of an economic downturn and more threats.

Moreover, his attempts to minimize partisanship in his relationship with Democrats have not gone unnoticed or unrewarded.

No surprise you'd bring that tripe into the discussion, and frankly the same goes for you erbine.

It was highly instructive watching certain news networks falling all over themselves as they reported the xmas day "gonad bomber" as it related to obama and his "vacation."

Almost without exception they made it a point of noting how he was kept abreast of the situation via "secure conference calls" etc... etc, and argumentum ad infinitum.

It was in stark contrast to the likes of you b henry and erbine [and a cast of similar nutjobs] who both think that by some miracle of modern communications [that didn't exist during the bush years apparently] only exist for obama so he can actually do his job. [or some close proximity of doing it]

Bruce Henry:

No need to get all personal on me, Marc. I'm simply noting that Bush took a month-long vacation 6 months into his tenure. Why do people take vacations? Maybe because they are TIRED? Tired physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, or whatever. Right?

I frankly have no problem with it, really. The Presidency must indeed be extremely tiring. Perhaps if a reporter had asked Bush if he were tired, he would have said yes. Apparently no one ever asked him, but someone did ask Obama. He said yes. So freaking what?

That's a good point, Marc, but one I already indirectly addressed.

It appears that the line of questioning the interviewer pursued was "Do you feel tired, and if so, why?" And Obama answered his questions. If Bush had been asked a similar question during his presidency, he may have answered in a similar fashion. Or don't you think he got tired? And don't you think he would have answered the question honestly? Anyway, since he was never asked the question, we'll never know the answer.

So, in my opinion, the puff-piece article, the response here, and all the outraged comments ("How dare he say he's tired!") are all pretty silly.

"How dare he say he's ti... (Below threshold)
Oyster:

"How dare he say he's tired!"

a) nobody said that exactly

and

b) we're laughing; not outraged as your non-quote would imply.

Obama is a whiner. Plain and simple. It's never his fault, even being tired isn't his fault. He's trying so hard to "clean up someone else's mess" when in fact he's not cleaning up any messes. He's simply changing some things back to what they were (ie our approach to terrorism) and changing somethings to what they should never be if we are to even recognize our country in a few years.

Comment #7 explains the problem pretty succinctly.

As an aside, my husband has tried in many ways to defend Obama when people have gone too far in their criticism. He's not a fan at all, but hates hyperbole and extremism more than anything. But even he said the other day that he's sick and tired of hearing Obama blame others every time he opens his mouth.

I know you don't know my husband, but believe me - that was a revelation coming from him.
