The Dems are in Even Worse Shape Than I Thought

CNN's angry old man Jack Cafferty is not exactly a fan of Republicans. In the past he has been pretty openly hostile to them. Imagine my surprise (does anyone say that anymore?) when I saw this video clip via Anchoress:

For those who missed it, and for me who just wants to see it in print, here is that last line:

Here's hoping the voters remember some of this crap when the midterm elections roll around later this year.
He is, in effect, telling viewers to return the Congress to Republicans in November. Well, he doesn't go that far. But at the very least he is telling them they should feel really crappy about themselves when they vote for Democrats this time around.

If Obama and the Democrats in Congress have lost Jack Cafferty they are in worse shape than I thought. Lack of transparency and broken promises on health care are the reason for this comment from Cafferty, but there are many other issues out there that do not help Democrats -- "shocking" lapses in security, record high deficit spending, record high unemployment, etc. There is other stuff out there too, like that global warming crisis that made so much money for people like Al Gore and scared your kids half to death. Not even considering those Climategate memos, it is pretty darn cold outside and this winter may be the coldest in 25 years.

I don't know how much difference Cafferty's comments will make except to those who spend a lot of time in airports and other places people are held captive to CNN, but it certainly can't be a good thing for any Democrats on the ballot in November. If Democrats were smart they would start distancing themselves from some of these unpopular policies and would work to deliver on some of those campaign promises. My guess is they will stick to their old playbooks though and blame Bush, who is no longer in office, and Republicans, who have been in the minority since 2007. That has worked for them in the past, but this time around people are paying closer attention.

Update: The following comment was made to this post:

And who really cares 'how' Obama and Congress go about doing things? What matters is the 'what' they do, the content and substance of the laws they pass and not whether the text of the bill has been posted online.

Here is my response: Who cares "how"? Well, a bunch of those insignificant little voters in flyover country do. You know, the ones who are not career politicians, the ones who pick up the tab. I can only hope that is the arrogant stance Democrats take from now 'til November. Using that logic it wouldn't matter which politicians sold their votes to the highest bidder, as long as the policy outcome was okay.

But that's the problem with the commenter's argument. Voters are not okay with the policies being enacted. These policies are pretty darned unpopular and are only becoming more so. That is one of the reasons people are as upset about the "how" as they are -- because they are not happy with the result of all that backroom dealing in the middle of the night.

Besides, Obama told them it was important to have the negotiations and debate open and aired on C-Span. Blame him if people seem overly interested in the "how." His promises of open government helped get him elected.

The problem is that they CAN'T abandon these policies. They wanted their pork and deliberately averted their eyes from Obama's follies. Heck, they even vigourously defended them, or kept their mouths shut when they had the chance to speak up.

The trillions of dollars going down the sewer were a result of their votes and lockstep support. Their arrogance in dismissing Tea Party protestors has resulted in a horrific economic situation that will cripple US taxpayers (the few that will be able to afford paying taxes) for generations.

They caused the problem, not Bush. All they had to do was to work to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but they followed the orders of Frank and Pelosi who said nothing was wrong with the system. They also said the same thing about Social Security and now that is heading into the toilet.

No matter how many campaign promises Obama breaks, Democrats are still going to vote for Democrats... and guys like Cafferty are going to be front and center in cheering on the Democratic candidates and criticizing the GOP candidates, so his taking shots at Obama and the Democrats amounts to a bunch of nothing.

I really don't believe that the Dems & media are going to suddenly switch over to the Republicans. They are going to grumble about how things should have been done better and how so much more was expected but in the end they will still support the Democratic candidates.

I think the Republicans can win back a large number of seats but at this point not sure though. The Republican leadership in Congress are the depressing members that over spent when they had control and showed no leadership abilities in the time since. I am left wondering where the new energy in the Republican party will come from and can only guess the Tea Bag groups will have to provide it.

If we get a new Republica majority, it will equally useless. It's already too late. Within a year or two the government will be printing money to pay the interest on the national debt. Hopefully the military junta that eventually replaces Obama when the system finally gives way will have more fiscal sense than this two-party system of self-serving idiots.

More importantly is how they slip the truth by the public.

Everyone is all atwitter about Pelosi's dig at obama's campaign "promises."

In the same presser she commented on the health care bill, to paraphrase... with the new regulations on insurers they will be begging for a public option.

She as many other have let slip know full well the ultimate goal is a full on gov funded health care system.

Let me know how that works out for ya after the two houses of congress agree on something, it gets passed and signed into law.

Then, AND ONLY THEN, will the American citizens learn which group of people get screwed or which state Senators or Reps got bribed.

Tell us you're really not that stupid.

Imagine if Bush had said this when he was President. Best way to tell if someone is a liberal is taking their statements and imagining the reaction if Bush had said or done what they were proposing.

Sturm,

Hey thanks for demonstrating with amazing clarity what a democrat and a progressive is really all about.

- The ends justify any means.
- The law and constitution can be ignored if they are obstacles in getting what they want
- The same means used by anyone else are wrong and evil EVEN if used to achieve the same ends
- In fact they deeply desire a fascist state as long as hey get to be the ones running the death squads.

Steve, consider for a brief moment what you just said:

who really cares 'how' Obama and Congress go about doing things? What matters is the 'what' they do

Now think of it this way:

It doesn't really matter what the Chicago Police do, as long as they get a confession (regardless of how many black people were put on death row after being tortured into confessing to crimes they didn't commit)

It doesn't really matter how Her Hitler gets the Jews out of our country as long as they are gone. (besides the concentration camps provide much needed jobs in the area)

It doesn't really matter how we get the people in the Ukraine to go along with our communist revolution as long as they go along (after all, what are a few million people starved to death anyway?)

The last one was both covered up by the left and ultimately applauded. Lenin, calculated that as much as 10% of the population of the USSR might have to be liquidated on the way to their worker's paradise.

But, you know, who cares HOW he gets it done, as long as WHAT he gets done is what the left wants.

Steve you are a hair's breadth away from excusing the worst crimes against humanity and the scary thing is that if something like that were to ever occur here I think you would be first in line to make those excuses. The only good news is that there are enough of the rest of us still left to stop idiots like you.

I mean it shouldnt matter how Congress and Obama go about doing it. What would matter is they achieved peace in the middle east.

Jim's comment reminded me of all the Democrats who cared very much about "how" we got KSM and others to reveal information that helped us thwart additional terrorist attacks. That is when the "we" was the Bush administration anyway. More than anything what Steve's comment shows is just how quickly so many liberals change the rules when the actions of a different party are at issue. There are countless examples of this. I am sure you all can come up with dozens without much thought.

My goodness, what is it wit... (Below threshold)

My goodness, what is it with you all that you insist on reading what isn't there? I never said voters liked the Democrats' policies. And me a Democrat? A liberal? Yeah, right.

My argument is simply that expending effort attacking the 'how' is a waste of time and there's much more to be gained by keeping the focus on the 'what'. Lorie, as much as you might like to think so, you're not emblematic of most voters who don't spend nearly the time you do watching and paying attention to what goes on in the corridors of Washington. They're not watching C-SPAN, they aren't counting the number of times Obama says something in campaign speeches and they could care less whether Democrats are inconsistent in attacking filibusters. And they're not upset with the how because of the what, they're upset because they don't like the what... period. Focus on that, the what. It is a waste of time getting all riled up over issues that flyover country doesn't care about, they're going to dismiss your complaints as typical partisan bickering (you say the Democrats don't play fair, the Democrats say the same thing about the GOP, and Iowa tunes them both out).

And Jim, without passing comment on the what-ifs in your comment, it isn't just me, most people don't care about the particulars of how the police do their job, they want safe streets... just as we want to be safe from terrorist attack and don't care if a few eggs (heads) get broken in the process.

most people don't ... (Below threshold)
jim m:
most people don't care about the particulars of how the police do their job, they want safe streets...

I disagree categorically. Yes, people want safe streets, but at the same time they care about the "How" of how the police do it. If the police are no more than another street gang, then the people aren't any safer. When Chicago police are beating up bartenders who won't serve them or murdering wedding guests people are very concerned with the "How".

And if you haven't noticed there is a lot a arguing about the "How" with regard to dealing with terrorism. Liberals have a big problem with the "How" if it doesn't give terrorists detained overseas the same rights as a US citizen.

I happen to be from "flyover country" and I do care about the "How" of how health care gets done. I really care about it when Pelozi and friends are breaking House and Senate rules in order to get it done. I really don't care about Obama's promises, but I am very concerned when the Democrats find it Oh so convenient to break the law in order to get their BS legislation passed. You wouldn't be saying the same thing if it were Republicans doing the same thing and hearing about it every night on the MSM news broadcasts.

People care a lot about "How" when they see that the government is not run well and that it is over reaching and taking away our freedoms and our economic futures. Obama can have all sorts of noble ideas, but if he is going to resort to fascist tactics to get them through then all we really end up with is fascism regardless of the intent (and that may actually be his intent after all).

You may comfort yourself by thinking that you are not alone in believing that the ends justify any means, but I would say that you are mistaken if you think that you are a serious majority. People might say they don't care about the means, but when they see what form that takes in reality they more often than not find themselves caring very much about those means. When those means start being used for ends you no longer agree with you find yourself care very much indeed.

Only a fool thinks that the ends will always be agreeable. Only a fool thinks that you can just worry about the means once the ends are achieved.

Unfortunately, that's not what you said. It's my contention that the general public needs to know the "how" because they don't fully understand the "what". Knowing "how" Congress has gone about doing what they're doing will raise suspicion & skepticism (both are healthy traits) in the minds of those who truly don't have an understanding of what was in either bill. A desire to find out what's in it will follow. The big question that will pop into their heads is the best of all, "If this bill is so great, why are they hiding behind closed doors?"

Too bad that it'll be too late to do anything about it because of the "how".
