I kid you not:
The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.
This announcement comes at the time when the situation supposedly still is "fluid" and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force still hasn't issued its final report on zoning uses of these waters.
That's a disappointment, but not really a surprise for fishing industry insiders who have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning.
"When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) completed their successful campaign to convince the Ontario government to end one of the best scientifically managed big game hunts in North America (spring bear), the results of their agenda had severe economic impacts on small family businesses and the tourism economy of communities across northern and central Ontario," said Phil Morlock, director of environmental affairs for Shimano.
"Now we see NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the administration planning the future of recreational fishing access in America based on a similar agenda of these same groups and other Big Green anti-use organizations, through an Executive Order by the President. The current U.S. direction with fishing is a direct parallel to what happened in Canada with hunting: The negative economic impacts on hard working American families and small businesses are being ignored.
"In spite of what we hear daily in the press about the President's concern for jobs and the economy and contrary to what he stated in the June order creating this process, we have seen no evidence from NOAA or the task force that recreational fishing and related jobs are receiving any priority."
Consequently, unless anglers speak up and convince their Congressional representatives to stop this bureaucratic freight train, it appears that the task force will issue a final report for "marine spatial planning" by late March, with President Barack Obama then issuing an Executive Order to implement its recommendations -- whatever they may be.
Led by NOAA's Jane Lubchenco, the task force has shown no overt dislike of recreational angling, but its indifference to the economic, social and biological value of the sport has been deafening.
And so big government promises to get even bigger.
Hope and change people... hope and change.

Isolate, marginalize, and minimize. So it makes perfect sense to start with the smallest and least vocal group of people and see how it goes, then go after the hunters and the rest. No wonder Obama is the NRA's gun salesman of the year. mpw

Ah yes, the WWF and the IFAW. I would imagine that most members live in the cities. Those of us who live in the country (and deep country) who actually live with the wildlife and see the ebb and flow of the species in our own back yards - we know nothing.
I live in an area where the spring bear hunt was big business. Now instead of hunters who came and enriched our local economy, we have nuisance bears who live in the dump. These bears learn to think of humans as nothing to be afraid of. They are wandering onto our parks and schoolyards (and I am not kidding). They are killed by police instead of hunters.
There is so much more to this story that the average U.S. citizen is unaware of that it is sad. The government and these environmentalists do start small and then just go on and on and on. Stop them now if you can.

This doesn't come as much of a surprise. Can't have logging, because of that cute little spotted owl. Can't farm in California because of that cute little snail darter minnow. Can't fish because of the damage all those sport fishermen wreak on fish populations. Can't drive SUV's because they poison the earth. Can't drill for oil on the North Slope because of those cute little caribou. Can't drill for oil off California because they might have an oil spill. Can't use nuclear power for electricity. Can't have a storage facility for nuclear waste. Can't have all those dirty tourists in our national parks. Can't eat junk food because Obama's kids are fat.
This is what happens when you fill our government with elite pencil-necked liberal academics who have no exposure to and no respect for real people.
Republicans may be the Party of No, but if that's the case, Democrats must be the Party of Can't.

So they're ignoring input? I'm really not surprised - it's got to be difficult getting thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of variations on "Hell no!" and "What the hell are you thinking?" and "Who the hell sponsored this craptastic piece of legislation and when is he due for re-election because I'm sure as hell going to donate to his opponent even if they're as insane as Cynthia McKinney!"
We simply just don't understand yet all the nuances involved in being subjects instead of citizens. The sooner we accept the fact that we've now got an uber-capable aristocracy running our lives, the easier it'll be for all of us. Poaching on the King's lands (IE federal property) is already forbidden, and since everything belongs to the King restricting the ability to fish is a logical outgrowth. One must preserve things for the King and his children, after all.
/sarc - but just barely.
I don't hunt. I don't fish. I used to backpack, still occasionally go camping. And I don't want to have some jackass arbitrary bureaucrat who's idea of getting out into the untouched wilderness is hitting a ball into the rough on a carefully manicured golf course deciding stuff like this without input from the people who will actually be AFFECTED by it - and then to have the WWF and IFAW dictating policy is about the equivalent of having virulent Greenpeace activists dictating energy policy for the country.
Oh, wait...

As a byproduct of this EO the gov. will be able to control drilling for natural gas by stopping fracturing drilling ( I think I am saying that right ). It is a process that uses h2o under high pressure, braking up the rock and extracting the gas. All this takes place underground but greenies complain about runoff. They may have a point but the techonology has been around for decades. Another point...While sport fishing may not really be involved these poeple are so wacky one never knows how far these nuts will push this. I've read in a local paper some people think we should not fish with worms cause the worms suffer. I don't know the worms I fish with don't say much.

No more fish. Then they will come for the cows. WE will all be forced to be vegetarians. The real goal here is for there to be fewer people.
If they ban recreational fishing, it will be the ultimate overplayed hand. Nobody seriously believes that catching a couple of fish for dinner needs to be banned. Perhaps limited because in some areas there has been overfishing, but not banned.
