Hypocrisy and the New York Times

A common view among those on the left is that large corporations are by definition evil and the executives who manage these companies are the root of this evil. As an example of their wicked behavior, one need not look any further than executives raking in huge salaries and bonuses while their corporations as a whole are bleeding revenue and profits.

Last year, President Obama put limits on the executive pay at $500,000 for companies that requested funds from the (then) new bailout program. While the implementation of this plan has been met with a few bumps, the message was clear. The fat cats were going on a diet. The New York Times reported on this with an article titled "In Curbing Pay, Obama Seeks to Alter Corporate Culture." There you have it. The existing corporate culture is decadent and needs changing.

Of course the New York Times is itself part of a corporation and one that has not been performing well in recent years. From a report from the Business Insider:

The publisher of The New York Times, The Boston Globe, the International Herald Tribune and 15 other daily newspapers had its smallest ad revenue decline in a year. It dropped 14.7 percent in the fourth quarter from the same period of 2008, compared with a 26.9 percent year-over-year decline during the third quarter.
So the good news is that they only saw a 15 percent decline instead of a 27 percent one. Overall earning are up. How did they manage this improvement?
The New York Times Co. says its fourth-quarter earnings climbed more than threefold, helped by cost cutting, an improving ad market and a one-time gain from lower pension costs.
Wait, what cost cutting?
That, along with layoffs and other cost-cutting steps, helped the Times Co. earn $90.9 million, or 61 cents per share. In the same quarter a year ago, it earned $27.6 million, or 19 cents per share.

Overall revenue fell 11.5 percent to $681 million.

Layoffs? Reduced pension costs? These seem like actions eerily similar to those an evil executive might make. How have NYT personally fared? From the NY Post (hat tip Powerline):
Top executives at the beleaguered New York Times Company reaped hefty rewards last year, with Chairman Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger more than doubling his total compensation to $6 million.

CEO Janet Robinson got even more, reaping $6.3 million, a 31.9 percent hike.

The pay numbers were disclosed in Securities and Exchange Commission filings yesterday.

and
Michael Golden, a first cousin of Pinch's who is vice chairman and chief operating officer of the Times' Regional Media Group, took home $2.4 million in total compensation last year, up 71 percent. CFO Jim Folo received a 20 percent boost, earning $1.3 million.
Hypocrisy thy name is the New York Times.

I'll bet all those laid off NYT's workers and the one's who took pay cuts are just THRILLED that Pinch made MILLIONS. Probably didn't mind that their pension funds were also cut.

Well, they are all flaming liberals. So now they can live by what they preach.

Not only that, but when incentivized to employ minorities Sulzberger and the rest would rather forego $100,000's in bonuses rather than actually employ one.

Sulzberger and Robinson earned $0 under the agreement. Apparently minorities are good enough to serve their food and clean their toilets but not work for their newspaper.

Liberals, the real racists among us.

Ever notice that the liberal trolls stay out of threads where there is no excuse for the behavior of the people they support? They just will not try to engage in a defense because there isn't one available. They know they have been outed as hypocrites so they lie in wait for a thread supporting Israel or something and then they pounce. They can't post fast enough to defend a bunch of homicide bombers (I mean victims) while making the specious claim that they only resort to violence because the Israelis are oppressing them. Did these people EVER read anything about people like Yasser Arafat? While he played the victim card like a maestro, he also made himself very wealthy off the backs of the people he purported to represent to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars of which none was passed on to the Palestinian people. And, of course, he was a terrorist no matter how much he liked to pretend that he was a statesman.

But as for the New York TImes, hypocrisy indeed abounds. While the company bleeds millions of dollars and their subscription base shrinks they lay off people, cut benefits and handsomely reward the architects of the failed enterprise. Well played!
