Confirmed: Self-Righteous Envirnonmentalists Really are Jerks

For years you could not stand those smug, holier-than-thou environmentalists who felt they corned the market on moral superiority. Well, consider yourself a good judge of character. The Daily Caller brings us the story:

When Al Gore was caught running up huge energy bills at home at the same time as lecturing on the need to save electricity, it turns out that he was only reverting to "green" type.

According to a study, when people feel they have been morally virtuous by saving the planet through their purchases of organic baby food, for example, it leads to the "licensing [of] selfish and morally questionable behaviour", otherwise known as "moral balancing" or "compensatory ethics".

Do Green Products Make Us Better People is published in the latest edition of the journal Psychological Science. Its authors, Canadian psychologists Nina Mazar and Chen-Bo Zhong, argue that people who wear what they call the "halo of green consumerism" are less likely to be kind to others, and more likely to cheat and steal. "Virtuous acts can license subsequent asocial and unethical behaviours," they write.

You always knew that those environmentalists who sneered down their noses at you because you didn't put your recycled glass and plastic at the curb every week and drove an SUV instead of a Prius were like arrogant jerks. Now there's a study to prove it.

Well, I guess the science is settled on this one, isn't it?

Who da thunk it?

I figured we all knew that the flat earth no growth enviro terrorists were assholes to begin with and Al Gore is no exception.

The whole global warming alarmist movement needs to be investigated for defrauding the taxpayer in the form of bogus data justifying grants for research. They then need to be arrested, convicted and jailed in El Paso without any climate control.

Baron Von Ottomatic:

I steal from the homeless, kick stray dogs, frequently cuss the elderly to their faces in the grocery store AND openly mock anything remotely considered "green". You don't have to be green to be a dick, but it does help the weak rationalize things in which the sociopath takes pride.

Now if you'll excuse me I have some old motor oil to dump down the storm drain.

Mac Lorry:

All you have to do is watch the Green Planet Channel's Renovation Nation show to see extreme examples of the "halo of green consumerism". These so-called "green homes" often have one or two energy efficient systems or lack something like AC, but beyond that they are examples of conspicuous consumption. If it's being green to cover a floor or to build a table using recycled materials just think how much greener it is to buy a previously owned (recycled) home. If a large home that uses no more energy than an average size home is green just think how much greener it is to live in a small home.

According to a study, when people feel they have been morally virtuous by saving the planet through their purchases of organic baby food, for example, it leads to the "licensing [of] selfish and morally questionable behaviour", otherwise known as "moral balancing" or "compensatory ethics".

Perhaps it's the other way around. People with a propensity for selfish and morally questionable behavior may purchase "green" products and support "green" causes as "moral balancing" or "compensatory ethics".

With Democrats in bed with radical environmentalists it's only a matter of time before much of the public experiences higher energy costs and draconian restrictions of one sort or another. We'll then see how many "good time greenies" stay in the green camp.

That puts a new and interesting perspective to the passage "Let not your right hand know what your left hand does".

But Mac brings up a valid point, it might be that those prone to "compensatory ethics" become self-rightious greens because it's a cheap way to buy virtue.

Right you are! From today's LA Times:

DWP rates may rise between 8% and 28% to pay for mayor's green initiatives...Households that get their power from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power could see their electric bills go up between 8.8% and 28.4%, depending on where they live and how much energy they use....Businesses would see increases in the average bill ranging from 20% to 26%.

Mac, you've described Gore perfectly. He got busy greening his house up and subsequently flew in more jets to more places than ever. I mean really, how much arable land is degraded weekly just for him to maintain his girth? Did you see the picture of his office? How many trees died for that office?

So you admit that you mistreat people you want to convert, Steve. How nice. So given that you're currently peeing on our legs, why should we follow your example? Time to brush up on your people skills.

Oyster:

Oh I get it. Kim says "you" as she is speaking to those who don't recycle and Green pipes back with "you" directed at Kim.

Even though that's not the gist of everything said in the post, Steve just wanted to imply that Kim can't be pulled away from Jerry Springer to recycle.

Steve, the point you're ignoring about the post is that there are a good many people who may, for example, recycle, but will then over fertilize their lawn. It's the whole concept, unconscious or not, of balancing good deeds and bad deeds - or performing good deeds to assuage their conscience of any bad deeds.

I know you may have trouble recognizing the hypocrisy unless the individual is clearly labeled as a republican/conservative. So go stand in the corner and think about it.
