From the comments, a definition of liberalism that makes a ton of sense:
Liberalism isn't stupidity or evil. Liberalism is spiritual sickness. Liberalism is based on the notion of ressentiment (Ressentiment is a sense of hostility directed at that which one identifies as the cause of one's frustration, an assignation of blame for one's frustration. The sense of weakness or inferiority and perhaps jealousy in the face of the "cause" generates a rejecting/justifying value system, or morality, which attacks or denies the perceived source of one's frustration. The ego creates an enemy in order to insulate itself from culpability. - Wiki)
Liberalism is based on emotions of envy and guilt, thus is it cannot in any way be compatible with reality, as reality cannot guarantee equal outcomes in a free, chaotic world of nature.

First, it is time to take back the term Liberalism. There is a distinguished history attached to the Liberal philosophy, which was spawned in the age of enlightenment, and embraces the tenets of present day Conservatives. Traditional Liberals favored individual freedom and choice.
The people who have hi-jacked the term are actually Statists. That is what they should be called.
I also do not necessarily agree with the thesis of the post. Many Statists are actually elititist Utopians. As F. Hayek asserts in his excellent book, "The Road to Serfdom", they are frequently shocked at the results when their philosophy is actually fully implemented and progresses to its inevitable conclusion--as in Fascist and Communist totalitarian states.

Elitist Utopianism/Statism is still spiritual sickness. At its heart it is idolatry.

I agree with OldFlyer. Many of today's "liberals" are not so liberal and do a disservice to the term.
