Political M4sturbation Times Four

Seattle joins Los Angeles, San Diego and Austin, Texas to officially boycott Arizona over it's new anti-illegal immigration law.

Seattle City Council approves Arizona boycott.

"However, the Seattle City Council's 7-0 vote on Monday to boycott the state won't have much practical effect.

The council's resolution was written to protect the only substantial contract Seattle has with an Arizona company - a $106,000-a-month deal with American Traffic Solutions. The Scottsdale-based company operates Seattle's 29 red-light cameras."

And as we all know, red light cams are cash cows for large metro areas. In 2007 alone, Seattle grossed $1.1 million in fines from the 6 cameras it initially installed. By 2008, Seattle had 30 red light cameras.

So it's all really quite progressive: Indulge in worthless symbolism to sate tender liberal emotions - as long as it doesn't inhibit the flow of cash to the coffers.

But in the bizarre-o world of liberalism, can cities boycott themselves?

Only in the land of fruits 'n nuts, my friend.

The council's resolution says the city government will no longer do new business with Arizona companies, and they won't send city workers to conferences there.

And speaking of Seattle and Symbolism over Substance... check out this AssClown.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Clint Didier likes to bash bloated government as he courts support of the conservative tea-party movement for his primary-election campaign.

A former NFL player turned farmer, Didier has repeatedly called the federal government "a predator." He vows to oppose the "Marxist utopia" he says Democrats want to create -- "where everyone is taken care of from womb to tomb."

But Didier himself has cashed in on one big government aid program. He has received nearly $273,000 in federal farm subsidies since 1995, according to a database of U.S. Department of Agriculture subsidies maintained by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Didier's 1,000-acre Pasco farm has received price-support payments for wheat, corn and barley, reimbursement for crops destroyed by hail, and "conservation subsidies" to replace steel irrigation pipes with plastic. His annual take has ranged from $2,700 to $65,000, according to EWG, a nonprofit organization critical of the farm-subsidy program.

If you don't believe the boycotts are effective that's your business, but the fact is that they can't just cancel existing contracts because they feel like boycotting AZ, but they can decide to not enter new contracts with AZ businesses and they can stop state employees from traveling to AZ, etc.

But let's see - LA is boycotting, Austin, Texas is boycotting, and Seattle is boycotting. And I think San Francisco is boycotting AZ as well (again, new contracts and business, not canceling existing contracts).

There are obviously major political and economic consequences to Arizona's racism. I don't think anyone in Seattle, SF, LA and Austin who is behind the boycott thinks that the racists in Arizona will back down - but this isn't about getting the racists to change their minds -- it's about standing up for what is right in America.

One of Jay's sockpuppets, how cute.

Several years ago, Arizona decided they didn't want to follow the rest of the nation and adopt Martin Luther King's Birthday as a holiday.

Of course the reason was obvious - they wanted to stop the flow of illegals across the borde.... uhm, wait. That wasn't it.

No - they didn't want to celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday because he was an illegal immigrant?

Wrong again. They didn't want to celebrate Martin Luther King's Birthday because they're bigoted racists.

And, as you would expect, after several years they reversed themselves after being subjected to intense boycotts.

When Arizona was boycotted in 1993 for refusing to observer Martin Luther King day, Mr Kerbel says, it lost 130 conventions and the Super Bowl - as much as $350 million by some estimates. Now the potential impact has grown.

"When you add the social networking capability of the Internet to the mix, you have the potential for a fairly robust and widespread boycott," says Kerbel.

$350 million and that was back in the days before Facebook and Twitter, before social movements could grow and flex their muscles so much more easily.

I read that El Paso, Texas and Oakland, California are seriously considering boycotting AZ also.

Sucks to be racists. But the good news is that the nation knows it and is dealing with them accordingly... right wing masturbation fantasies notwithstanding.

"Police" Chiefs are notorious for being anything other that "Political" Chiefs. I know, I worked under several. In a beach town that really narrowed it down. I heard a radio broadcast this afternoon. A REAL BEAT COP from Phoenix said his chief "was full of political bullshit". His family and supporters have been making bank off of his reputation since then. The other , and most important, issue was the state truly could not afford another paid holiday. Paid holidays drains everyones coffers. The public and private sector lose money over these holidays.

Finally, istead of his birthday, I always thought his holiday should of been on the day he delivered his "I have a dream..." speech or at the very least on the day he was assinated, memorializing a tragic event in our society, lest we forget.

The core of Arizona's new law mirrors Federal Law with the exception of making it a misdemeanor to pick up illegals off the street for day labor and includes new language about how the law applies to employers and specifies the circumstances under which an officer can question and arrest someone he or she thinks is in violation of the law.

The Arizona law is much more broad, and requires the showing of papers without having been arrested first.

Which is absolutely a distinction without a difference for this discussion. The Arizona law requires investigation upon "lawful contact." Both California and Arizona thus require investigation upon "suspicion" that an otherwise lawfully detained individual is an illegal alien.

Leeward's claim that the difference between "lawful contact" and "arrest" makes the Arizona law more "racist" than California's law is specious at best.

Big difference, and the GOP used to stand up for individual rights like this - now they bend over for the racists instead.

BULLSHIT AGAIN LEE! Which is it? Arrest? OR MERE SUSPICION? You didn't get it right yesterday, and you're still in the same hole today.

Why not just toddle back off to DK and take your horse crap with you?

And I'm still waiting for your cut and paste job on WHICH PART OF THE AZ LAW IS ILLEGAL.

The English language/sentence construction is not your strong suit.

Note the "or" part nitwit.

The Cali law requires one or both.

GarandFan:

Don't trouble yourself Marc, Lee has never bothered to READ the law. Falls right in with his Obamassiah and the rest of his group. They don't even READ the legislation they pass.

You notice that President Waffles is now saying that 'the law has the possibility of abuse'.

Choke on it Barry!

LET'S SEE "YOUR PAPERS"

KALAMAZOO -- The White House appears to be laying the groundwork for President Barack Obama to shake the hand of each senior at Kalamazoo Central High School's commencement ceremony next month.

Seniors are being asked to provide their birth dates, Social Security numbers and "citizen status" to the Secret Service so background checks could be performed.

NO 'suspicion', NO arrest; Barry just wants to shake their hands (Hell, who'd want to shake HIS hand?).

What's the explanation Lee? President Two-Faced got a good reason for this?

Big difference . . .

I will agree with Leeward in part. The AZ statute as amended specifically says that police may not use race, ethnicity, or national origin as a factor to decide whether there is "reasonable suspicion" to determine if someone is in this country illegally. The CA fails to include that protection, so cops under the CA statute can still use race to make that determination.

Suppose Leeward is going to stop renting movie videos and watching TV as part of his California boycott?

Actually, you're full of shit.

None of our laws allow discrimination on the basis of race. Look it up.

And while the California law requires arrest or reason for suspicion the AZ law doesn't. In AZ the copy can stop someone for littering or jaywalking and demand to see their papers - not so in California.

Nice try, asshats. Even when you sit in a circle and feed off each other you still get it wrong.

By the way, the LA mayor just told the AZ racists to F off. lol... looking forward to more asshatted threats of stupidity from the racists in AZ...

Leeward is such an easy mark.

Follow me now, Leeward: The AZ law as amended requires a "lawful stop, detention or arrest." That means that the "stop" under the AZ law has to comply with a Constitutional "stop." The CA law does require an "arrest" (you're wrong [again] in saying that it requires "reason for suspicion"), but does not mention whether or not the arrest is valid. The AZ law bends over backwards in making sure that the "stop" is lawful.

By the way, Leeward, cops have been executing Constitutional "stops" based on "reasonable suspicion" ever since Terry v. Ohio in 1968.

You're in way over your pinhead. Wave the white flag and retreat.

Perhaps at some point you can answer why you do not support the enforcement of the law?
