Seattle joins Los Angeles, San Diego and Austin, Texas to officially boycott Arizona over it's new anti-illegal immigration law.
Seattle City Council approves Arizona boycott.
"However, the Seattle City Council's 7-0 vote on Monday to boycott the state won't have much practical effect. The council's resolution was written to protect the only substantial contract Seattle has with an Arizona company - a $106,000-a-month deal with American Traffic Solutions. The Scottsdale-based company operates Seattle's 29 red-light cameras."
And as we all know, red light cams are cash cows for large metro areas. In 2007 alone, Seattle grossed $1.1 million in fines from the 6 cameras it initially installed. By 2008, Seattle had 30 red light cameras.
So it's all really quite progressive: Indulge in worthless symbolism to sate tender liberal emotions - as long as it doesn't inhibit the flow of cash to the coffers.
But in the bizarre-o world of liberalism, can cities boycott themselves?
Only in the land of fruits 'n nuts, my friend.

If you don't believe the boycotts are effective that's your business, but the fact is that they can't just cancel existing contracts because they feel like boycotting AZ, but they can decide to not enter new contracts with AZ businesses and they can stop state employees from traveling to AZ, etc.
But let's see - LA is boycotting, Austin, Texas is boycotting, and Seattle is boycotting. And I think San Francisco is boycotting AZ as well (again, new contracts and business, not canceling existing contracts).
There are obviously major political and economic consequences to Arizona's racism. I don't think anyone in Seattle, SF, LA and Austin who is behind the boycott thinks that the racists in Arizona will back down - but this isn't about getting the racists to change their minds -- it's about standing up for what is right in America.
And the Right is Wrong again.
Notice that AZ also passed a law banning bilingual education.

When Ms King took a tour through San Diego years ago, she asked the cities leaders what they had named in honor of her late husband. They turned red-faced and said "er.....nothing." So liberals that they were, the next week Market Street became MLK Boulevard. Only problem was, the PEOPLE who lived on Market St LIKED THE OLD NAME. Their problem with the name change was essentially, "What did King do for San Diego?". Took 10 years, but Market Street is back. The liberals had to be content with re-naming a section of freeway for him.
Oh, and Lee, you racist, bigoted bastard, don't forget Cape Kennedy is now Cape Canaveral once again. Kennedy was WHITE as I recall.
Places are normally named for, AND KEPT, when there is some hard tie with the local neighborhood. Come on down, Lee, and just try to rename Basilone Road to something else. You'll probably get your racist ass hung from the nearest utility pole.
Arizona actually asked the right questions at the time. How many paid holidays can government support? What did MLK do for Arizona? Hell, had he ever been to Arizona?
Did you know the Racist! bastards in Kalifornia don't get a full paid holiday on Caesar Chavez Day? Most local government said NO! Not unless you give up some other paid holiday in exchange. Racist bastards!

You clowns have been listening to right wing liars again. Te California law cited and the Arizona law are not the same or even close.
But Michelle Malkin lies and people line up behind her carrying "I'm with Stupid" signs...
Wow.
49 states get behind celebrating MLK's birthday for what he did for our country and its people, and the Arizona racists just can't get behind that.
Quit making excuses for their bigoted behavior. It's an obvious pattern.

"Police" Chiefs are notorious for being anything other that "Political" Chiefs. I know, I worked under several. One even FORBADE officers from broadcasting suspect information about RACE over the police radio. We all laughed our asses off - "20-22 yr old male, 5-10, wearing blue shirt, brown shorts". In a beach town that really narrowed it down. I heard a radio broadcast this afternoon. A REAL BEAT COP from Phoenix said his chief "was full of political bullshit". Personally, from experience, I believe him. Most get to be Chief by political maneuvering, not solving crimes or arresting people.
"If you don't recognize that Arizona didn't go along with MLK's birthday because he was black you aren't very smart."
Like I said, when MLK's turn for a "holiday" rolled around, there were already 12 paid ones on the calendar. Caesar Chavez made 14 in Kalifornia when Hispanics wanted a day for him. I know our local city gave employees a choice: Take it as a paid day off, AND YOU LOSE ONE OF THE OTHER ONES. Or take it as an unpaid day off. Guess that makes local government RACIST! in your bigoted and diverse view.
NOW LEE, YOUR ASSIGNMENT, CUT AND PASTE THE RELEVANT SECTION OF ARIZONA LAW THAT IS ILLEGAL.

LA is 'kinda-sorta' boycotting. According to Mayor Tony, they don't want to hurt LA's economy, just Arizona's.
A commission member from Arizona sent Tony a letter, asking if he really wants to go that route. Seeing as Arizona generates 1/4 of the electrical power that the city of LA uses.
Typical liberals, very 'selective' in what they boycott. Like I said earlier, a lot of 'symbolism over substance'. Liberals will take a stand, as long as it doesn't inconvenience them.

I was in AZ when the fight against MLK was being waged. It wasn't about his skin color, although that is an easy assumption for an outsider to make. First off, he hadn't accomplished anything as great as being a President, winning a revolution, ending slavery etc. He gave great speeches and led popular protests, but not much else. His family and supporters have been making bank off of his reputation since then. The other , and most important, issue was the state truly could not afford another paid holiday. Paid holidays drains everyones coffers. The public and private sector lose money over these holidays.
Finally, istead of his birthday, I always thought his holiday should of been on the day he delivered his "I have a dream..." speech or at the very least on the day he was assinated, memorializing a tragic event in our society, lest we forget.

Follow me now, Leeward: The AZ law as amended requires a "lawful stop, detention or arrest." That means that the "stop" under the AZ law has to comply with a Constitutional "stop." The CA law does require an "arrest" (you're wrong [again] in saying that it requires "reason for suspicion"), but does not mention whether or not the arrest is valid. The AZ law bends over backwards in making sure that the "stop" is lawful.
By the way, Leeward, cops have been executing Constitutional "stops" based on "reasonable suspicion" ever since Terry v. Ohio in 1968.
