AP and Racism

Earlier today Alan wrote about Tim Scott's victory in South Carolina and the implications on the Congressional makeup post 2010. Also in South Carolina, Nikki Haley, who is of Indian descent, easily won her primary. How does the AP choose to cover the news? With a story that begins (emphasis mine):

In a break from the state's racist legacy, South Carolina Republicans overwhelmingly chose Nikki Haley, an Indian-American woman, to run for governor and easily nominated Tim Scott, in line to become the former Confederate stronghold's first black GOP congressman in more than a century.
As Katheryn Jean Lopez says over at the Corner: "Next time let us know what your really think about the south." Once again I'm tempted to express shock at the level of bias displayed by our national media but really who is shocked at this point? Apparently only small percentage of the population.

Authors Liz Sidoti and Jim Davenport should be ashamed of themselves. Do they start stories about German Chancellor Merkel with "in a break from her anti-semitic past" and "former Nazi stronghold"? I am reminded of that old 'joke' where someone asks a man "So, have you stopped beating your wife?" What response is there to give?

The sad truth is that Sidoti and Davenport probably don't even see themselves as biased. Which makes me wonder if I should be angry with them or just pity them.

Driving around with the Confederate flag is not racist. Knowing the difference between being black and being a niggers isn't. There are white niggers as well. Although they are usually refer to as "white trash" but by no means always.

It seems like the most prejudice people are from the left especially form the west coast and east coast crowd. Many of them consider Southerners as inbreeded, uneducated, stupid, prejudice hicks. They think the Confederate flag represents a desire to return to slavery or white power to Southerners when it does not. Of course at the same time they have no problem with black power signs and organizations that are about black power. Their members and leaders admit it is so.

But double standards and giving people preferential treatment because of the color of their skin is no problem for the left.

I vote for pitying them and their narrow minds, but being angry at the people that hire them to deliver their narrow minded views to you at your cost (assuming you subscribe to a newspaper, pay for cable, visit retailers that advertise on news shows, etc.). Personally, that's what bothers me about media bias, they can have any opinion they want, but if they're going to charge me for balanced and accurate reporting, I want balanced and accurate reporting, not their opinion (outside of op/ed pages, and even then I want accuracy). If they want to advertise themselves as an opinion journal, fine, but they don't.

I watched the media use the same style all during the last general election season. When writing stories about Michelle Obama they marveled at her homemaking skills, praised her boardroom personna and went all gaga at what a terriffic mother she was. When writing about Cindy McCain she was always protrayed in the context of human error and failure as they breatlessly recounted a detailed timeline of her addiction and the punishment meted out to her for the manner in which she procurred the drugs. They reprinted unflattering photos of her and even accused her of flagrantly stealing recipes to claim as her own. I found exactly one story that recounted her humanitarian endeavors that far outstrip anything Michelle Obama has ever done. And it took a lot of looking to find.

So why, oh why, would I be surprised that the AP would so blandly use South Carolina's "racist legacy" as a backdrop with which to portray election results that didn't produce minority Democrats? If Haley and Scott had been Democrats, the results would have been described as anything BUT race related. It would have been a repudiation of the Tea Party and the conservative philosophy.

Would I be angry at them? No. They're just useful idiots. Should I pity them? Hell no. They're just useful idiots. But I repeat myself.

If you guys are going to honestly suggest that the South, and in particular South Carolina, doesn't tend to have more racism than the rest of the US - that is completely and totally absurd.

The Confederate flag can mean a lot of things to the South, including regional identity. Fine, I get that. But it also is beloved in particular by a lot of **avowed** white racists. It is a symbol that white people know means something different to blacks - and with good reason. To black people, it reminds them of when they were sold and their **children** were sold, while they were worked to death and raped at will.

Can you understand how, with that background, it's pretty racist to try and fly that flag at the state capitol? You're officially telling an entire segment of your state's population, as their government, that their parents history and their pain doesn't matter - because **your** parents left you a view of the same flag that says its pretty.

The North has its own racism too. Racism is everywhere. But it's nowhere near as reflexively dismissive and destructive as that, I'm sorry.

The two states with the most overall racist incidents are currently California with 60, and Texas with 66. So, a geographcilly Southern state still "wins" as most racist - but CA and TX are also the two largest states.

If we define the "South" as meaning the states that fought with the Confederacy during the Civil War - which is how must people mean "the South" - then it would be fair to measure the South against the North.

Texas is part of the South, as it was part of the confederacy.

The total count for racist incidents in the historical North vs. South states is: North 357, South 397.

Guess what? This indicates that the South is more racist.

Still a point of pride in the two communities. There have been hate crimes recently in Toronto and Montreal too, just so you're aware. Canada is not free of racism, nor is any other country. Every country has racist and fascist elements today and throughout its history, Marc, but the difference is racists in South Carolina deny that they are racist or that racism exists in their state (racism is finished, now it's just a matter of black people being lazy!), whereas other countries--Germany, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, etc.--find it to be a shameful feature of their societies and try to proactively address it with legislation and social engineering.

So I'm not a hypocrite, and you have a tough time with nuance, but I'm glad that you did learn something this afternoon about my country and proved to the whole class that you know how to use The Google. Good job! B+!

Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, both black, each owned 84 black slaves.

"In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more."

"According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. Hyper,

Did you know that there is large migration of Blacks from the North back to the south?

Did you also know that the states like NY,NJ, CT MA are depopulating and moving to the South?

Also since I am black and what often feel we have experience they do not understand let me let you in on a little secret.

Many blacks left the south and thought that their be no racism in the promise land. Once their they found racism and discrimination only it was covert rather than overt and many white friend would be polite but make sure to stab you in the back.

The south is no more racist these days than the north in fact having lived in both places as black man I tell you the south has less problems. You have fight in the south it a fight. In the north they always want to let you know which races were involved.
