Jeremiah Wright is still a racist hate-monger

It remains incredible to me that Obama spent 20 years in this man's church and yet was elected President of the United States:

He's been keeping such a low profile since nearly derailing Barack Obama's campaign for president in 2008 -- is it possible that the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright has mellowed?

Hardly.

During a five-day seminar Wright taught last week in Chicago, he was back at it, claiming that whites and Jews are controlling the flow of worldwide information and oppressing blacks in Israel and America.

"White folk done took this country," Wright said. "You're in their home, and they're gonna let you know it."

...

"You are not now, nor have you ever been, nor will you ever be a brother to white folk," he said. "And if you do not realize that, you are in serious trouble."

He cited the writings of Bill Jones -- author of the book "Is God a White Racist?" -- as proof that white people cannot be trusted. "Bill said, 'They just killed four of their own at Kent State. They'll step on you like a cockroach and keep on movin', cause you not a brother to them.' "

Wright referred to Italians as "Mamma Luigi" and "pizzeria." He said the educational system in America is designed by whites to miseducate blacks "not by benign neglect but by malignant intent."

He said Ethiopian Jews are despised by white Jews: "And now the Knesset [Israeli parliament] is meeting with European Jews, voting on whether or not these African Jews can get into [Israel]."

The civil-rights movement, Wright said, was never about racial equality: "It was always about becoming white . . . to master what [they] do." Martin Luther King, he said, was misguided for advocating nonviolence among his people, "born in the oven of America."

"We probably have more African-Americans who've been brainwashed than we have South Africans who've been brainwashed," he said, and seemed to allude to President Obama twice: "Unfortunately, I got in trouble with a fella for saying this . . . All your commentaries are written by oppressors." At the mention of Nation of Islam head Louis Farrakhan -- whom Obama disavowed during the campaign -- black leaders "go cuttin' and duckin'," he said.

20 years of this kind of vitriol... 20 years... and you don' think to leave, you don't think to run, you don't think that you'd be better off somewhere else?

There is no good reason to have stayed that long.

None.

And yet he was elected to the highest office in the land.

We have sunk to new depths.

His parents, his childhood years, his mentors, his college years. The big questions is, why is there no openness about this man? What are they hiding? It has to be something very serious and bad. It appears as if he came from a very disfunctional family.

I still think the response you'll get from most of the MSM is, "Jeremiah who?"

Which is incredible, considering that if a white man with any connection to the Republican party said such outrageous and bigoted things in favor of white people on a regular basis, he would be front page/lead story in every major newspaper and broadcast in America.

Well, the only reason I can think of that this might be true is that Jeremiah Wright does most of his preaching in the United States and not in South Africa. If you're African-American and the fold of hate is your refuge, Jeremiah Wright is your shepherd.

I think some balance is needed. Agreed, on how was it that Obama could remain silent in Wright's pew, in the face of these opinions?, Perhaps, as a looming impressionistic young politician, (you can only pick so many fights), he thought it useless to try to challenge them. However, extreme Christian ministers traditionally, as messengers "of the word of God", get so much latitude, for preaching all sorts of 'fire and brimstone' or crazy hate. It seems almost as if their audience expects them to do so.

For example,
Some hateful, radical ministers -- white evangelicals -- are (or were) acceptable"
, by white conservative politicans; they normally don't bless liberal politicians or vice -versa. These conservative politicians have normally, remained silent too, in the wake of all sorts of preaching of 'godly' revenge, unless they are absolutely forced to, (as Obama was) to recant their minister's words, as well.

Consider the various potential analogies and then try to explain how this guy got elected president???

If George Bush had listened to David Duke preaching for 20 years . . . the media would have rightly denounced him as too tainted by association.

Dan Quayle, who was smarter and had more experience in relevant government service, made a couple of speaking mistakes and is permanently labeled a dunce. Obama makes almost non-stop stupid comments and the media won't touch it out of fear of being labeled racist for noticing.

We could have a lengthy thread with similar examples. Bottom line there is no rational explanation for this guy getting elected. There were dozens of contributing factors (diminished Republican brand caused by acting like Dems, nominating McCain, economy tumbling at worst possible time, etc.), but no rational reason to vote for someone like Obama. No decent, intelligent, patriot voted for this guy.

Steve,

Nice try, but no dice. It is weak to compare sitting in the pews listening to some racist moron rant against whitey for 20 years to accepting the endorsement from a preacher. Obama did not merely meet Wright in passing and act polite when getting his endorsement. No, he said in one of his various auto-biographies that the racist, hateful, moron was his mentor. Unless someone is being willfully ignorant they have to recognize the difference.

Is there racism in today's ... (Below threshold)
JLawson:

Is there racism in today's society? Yes. Is it bad? Compared to past times - it's hardly noticeable. This is not to say that things can't be better - but "Perfect is the Enemy of Good Enough". We've had about all the massive cultural change we're going to see - the election of President Obama is something which would have been unimaginable even a decade back.

What we need to do now is already being done - I'm old enough to remember how shocking it supposedly was when Kirk kissed Uhuru in the '60s, and how it was controversial to have Bill Cosby play opposite Robert Culp in "I-Spy". I always thought it was a big so-what - it didn't make any sense to me at all that the color of someone's skin was important.

Now in the media, in pop culture - where's the racism? What direction does it go?

I live in the South - and the racism I see mostly doesn't flow from white to black, it's endemic in the black culture. SOME blacks dislike all whites. SOME blacks rip on anyone lighter than they are. SOME blacks get along with everyone.

It's a matter of attitude, of 'mind over matter'. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

And I've found if you treat someone with respect, you end up getting that respect back - so it doesn't hurt to respect others in the first place.

Simple civility greases the gears and wheels of civilization and makes life more pleasant for everyone.

Are there racist whites? Of course. They tend to be uneducated, however, and prone to blame blacks for their problems and failures. It's fun, I guess, to be bitterly resentful towards some other group, especially if that group visibly seems to get more handouts and perqs than you do. And that goes for ANY skin color, by the way. Our culture right now is, in my opinion, the LEAST racist it's been in the last 300 years, and trending even less so... despite the efforts of some people.

Because there's some, like Wright, who get their 'power' and influence (and congregation, and money) from anger and division. They'll gladly throw sand in the gears and block the wheels, because it gets THEM what they want. They want people to listen to them, they want attention, they want money and fame.

It's in their interest to promote racial hatred - the more hate, the more influence. There's no downside for them.

And they'll get a pass - because if anyone says anything against their preaching of hate, they'll be accused in their turn of being racist bigots.

Not well, I expect. The concepts behind Wrights' preaching mandate that anyone outside his race are the ones who are oppressing everyone else - you don't change the narrative and expect to maintain continuity, and it doesn't matter what the reality is. What matters is feeding out a line that enough people believe - because the more people believe him, the more power he has.

"Well he's not any worse than Pat Robertson."

I disagree, Jim X. Pat Robertson doesn't preach hatred as a matter of course and he's pretty damn boneheaded at times. The man's got a lot less influence than you might think. Certainly he doesn't have the President's ear, or the influence of 20 years of Sunday radical black liberation theological indoctrination forming the President's thinking.

(I posted this to the wrong thread. Posting here now)

In the post just below, J. Christian Adams was quoted. In his piece he says:

"Contrary to the views of some conservatives, racial discrimination still exists. A black motorist pulled over by the police is likely to have a different experience than a similarly situated white motorist. Without question, some apartment complexes and dining establishments still treat blacks differently from whites. The Department of Justice's undercover housing testing program demonstrates this fact over and over again."

This is undoubtedly true. And Reverend Wright would unquestionably attest to this as well. However, he would, and does, use this fact to justify his disgusting words. He also demeans MLK and what MLK stood for: judging people individually by their character. The answer to the problems that do still stubbornly exist is to follow Dr. Kings words and not Wrights. The difference between the two is night and day. Wright assumes indiscriminate "payback" will level the playing field and King rightfully assumed equality is what levels the playing field.

Mr. Wright (I know his announced title, but a man who makes money off hate is no servant of God) should be judged apart from President Obama. As much as I believe that Barack Obama is no more a Christian than I am a member of the DNC, I nonetheless believe that the President is as dismayed as anyone by Wright's latest escapades, although in Obama's case the reaction is mostly in the category of 'like I need this to deal with on top of everything else I touch blowing apart'. If President Obama had any influence with Wright, none of this would have hit the air until next spring. This is important because it represents a split between the two. Maybe Obama split with Wright when he discovered Wright is as evil in his heart as Charles Manson, or maybe he's just playing politics because Obama knows the 'hate Whitey' tactic is out-of-bounds with about 95% of Americans. But I will give President Obama that much benefit of the doubt, at least.

But what does that matter? You spend 20 years listening to crap like the black liberation theology, a lot of it's going to stick. I know you'd like to believe otherwise (I sure would like to) but we've already seen that Obama's spring-loaded to the 'blame whitey' default with the Crowley-Gates mess, and the decision by the Justice Department to not prosecute the New Black Panther party for voter intimidation had to come from somewhere.

(Conversely, if it'd been a pair of white guys hanging around a polling place working on influencing the vote, they'd have been prosecuted and sentenced by now... and rightly so. You DON'T mess with the vote, whether you're midnight black, albino white, or any shade in between.)

Do you think that because he's not palling around with them at present that his attitudes and thought patterns haven't already been formed?

Rick,
Why did BHO stay with Wright? he stayed because he loved what Rev W. was saying.

BHO spoke of the sermon that drew him to the the Rev Wright . He even named his book after it.

The Audacity of Hope" is sermon which ends with "White Mans Greed kills a world in Need."

It was not the talk of Jesus Christ love that won the BHO over it was social justice political sermon that attacked western world and white people. It was an appeal to BHO radical ideology.

One must understand that Wrights doctrine is more like the Aryan Nation. It is the use of Religion to espouse a race based view of the world. BHO could never be a post racial president when his mentor only see race, guilt and hate in everything.

Wright preaches Black Liberation Theology which came into being in 1966. Let us see what the founder of the movement Rev James Cone states.

The black theologian must reject any conception of God which stifles black self-determination by picturing God as a God of all peoples. Either God is identified with the oppressed to the point that their experience becomes God's experience, or God is a God of racism.... The blackness of God means that God has made the oppressed condition God's own condition. This is the essence of the Biblical revelation. By electing Israelite slaves as the people of God and by becoming the Oppressed One in Jesus Christ, the human race is made to understand that God is known where human beings experience humiliation and suffering...Liberation is not an afterthought, but the very essence of divine activity.
"A moral or theological appeal based on a white definition of morality or theology will serve as a detriment to our attainment of black freedom. The only option we blacks have is to fight in every way possible, so that we can create a definition of freedom based on our own history and culture. We must not expect white people to give us freedom. Freedom is not a gift, but a responsibility, and thus must be taken against the will of those who hold us in bondage."
"If God is not for us and against white people," writes Cone, "then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill gods who do not belong to the black community."
Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.
