Signs of cultural decay

Look... before you get your panties in a knot over this... think like a liberal... be open-minded... understand the benefits of cultural diversity... ok... now you should be ready to read the following:

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has appeared in the form of "corrective surgery" at a premier American hospital. While we lambaste the practice abroad, some doctors are justifying its use and performing FGM in the United States.

In 1997, it was estimated that 168,000 women and girls had been or were at risk of undergoing FGM. This isn't just immigrants bringing their cultural practice to the U.S.; as it turns out, FGM is being performed at an Ivy League university. This story demonstrates how our image-obsessed culture is encouraging the mutilation of young girls.

Dr. Dix P. Poppas, head of pediatric urology department at Cornell University's New York Presbyterian Hospital, one of the premier hospitals in the nation, has been performing clitoral reductions -- a.k.a. female genital mutilation -- on young girls. The abhorrent practice, according to the good doctor, is humane because it spares girls from the humiliation of having an "oversized" clitoris. He claims the practice is "nerve-sparing" and that he runs tests by prodding and using a vibrator on the young girls after the surgery.

The surgery in and of itself is bad... but then we have grown men "prodding and using a vibrator on the young girls"...

Really?

Where are the feminists?  Where are those who decry the abuse of children in the Catholic Church?  Where is the media?

Has anyone see these people?

Anyone?

Disgusting. I guess if they call it something other than mutilation they can get away with it. It seems to me that there are people in this country giving our enemies the rope to hang ourselves. Break down the decent culture of a country and you break down the country as a whole.

I would like to do a little genital corrective surgery on this doctor....with a cross-bow.
What about the parents of these girls.....or wait, are them muslim?? Enough said. Damn I hate that religion and worst the people who defend it. So there! Am I a racist??? NO, I just hate evil.

Surgery to repair a congenital abnormality seems a lot different than FGM. There are a few pix on the web, and they sure look appropriate for correction. As for followup checks for nerve function, this seems appropriate for a surgeon who may need to do other such operations. Additionally, detected low nerve function may possibly be treated, perhaps by blood flow enhancement.

As for timing of surgery, it is well known that the younger the better for faster and fuller healing and development.

This is misplaced outrage.

Is this your admission that you don't know where to find one?

Here is a short list of feminist/progressive sites that have discussed this story, with varying degrees of outrage. I'm sure at least one of them will be indignant enough even for you:

Enough already with that moronic rhetorical question of yours. We know you hate feminism, but you don't have to lie to make your point.

jim m:

Libs will continue to look the other way on this issue for 2 reasons:

1) the people who practice it come from a cultural background other than western European/American and all other cultures are superior to western European/American and therfore cannot be criticized.

and

2) The people who practice it come from a culture that hates America so nothing they do can be wrong.

This story needs to be looked into, I'm starting to suspect it is not what it seems. After trying to find supporting information on the claim, it is starting to appear that a transgender rights activist is trying to slander Dr. Dix P. Poppas. I'll post a follow up shortly.

2 clicks of the mouse (on links associated with this post)lead to the published 2007 article by the physician in question. This operation is being performed on females that were born with CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA, which is the most common form of HERMAPHRODITISM!

In short, all of your outrage is wildly misplaced. I agree, a quick (lazy/drive-by media type) glance at the article is discusting, I expect more from my long time friends/commenters at Wizbang!

Donna,

Aside from the fact that you have never had anything positive to say about what has been posted here, what makes you think anyone is ignoring Imhotep's valid contribution?

Perhaps his shining a bit of light on this situation has taken the sting out of it, so people are actually absorbing what he said and have decided rapid-fire comments of condemnation are not appropriate.

Just because people have not commented on your timeline doesn't mean you need to get a hypocritical bug up your ass.

Christ. Go take a hycolonic.
