First it was Harry Reid. Now it's Howard Dean.
This will set some teeth a'gnashin':
Former Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont governor Howard Dean, a hero to many liberals, has called efforts to build an Islamic community center two blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks "a real affront to people who lost their lives."
"That site doesn't belong to any particular religion, it belongs to all Americans and all faiths," he said.
Dean, speaking on New York's WABC-AM radio, said he would like to see a compromise on the issue - one that includes moving the Islamic center to another site. He adds, however, that "people should be able to worship as they see fit."
Dean argues that though the backers of the project are "trying to do something that's good" and integrate Muslims "into the fabric of the United States," the issue is "very delicate" and there should be a compromise "so that everybody is accommodated by this."

Ironically, I think Obama backing this Mosque is his Howard Dean screech moment, his chappaquiddick if you will. I think this is the last straw for Americans. The first step downward was the 2016 Olympic bid snub. I dont think he'll recover politically from this.

Maybe Dean & Obama should get together for a beer summit and a sing along to "Ebony & Ivory"...

Something must be happening. Or insiders don't know, but fear something is happening. Too many people from the "absolute right to practice their religion" side are suddenly talking about considering all sides. Howard Dean just laid his cards down and asked for five new ones.

You know, it would be nice to "integrate" Muslims into the fabric of American life. The way Jews and Sikhs and Bhuddists have integrated.
For example, in America, a Jew is free to choose to show his devotion to his God by keeping Kosher, that is, eating a particular diet commanded by his Holy Book. He is free to personally choose to live by the Ten Commandments, which are his God's moral guidelines for his life. He is free to choose an employer who allows him to leave work early to start his weekend before sunset Friday night, and perhaps time off for Feast days.
However, the Jew cannot, under American law, force the Sikh or the Bhuddist to follow his God's Ten Commandments, nor is the Bhuddist allowed to force the Jew to meditate trancendentally. Each is allowed to speak with the others about their faiths, to proselytize in an attempt to convince the other about their faith, but attempts to force another to change religions under duress would likely be felony assault.
Those of the above scenario are integrated when they respect the personal, religious, and institutional freedoms that are America's birthright, heritage, tradition, and highest ideal. Those who cross the border illegally for base gain, or in a disguise of respect while planning the violation of others freedoms and rights, even to the taking of lives, are not integrated into the fabric of America, no matter how long they have been here or how long they plan to stay, or how many friends or family they have here.
