Kathleen Sebelius threatens to shut ObamaCare critics out of health care system

The Obama Administration via Kathleen Sebelius is threatening to shut out from the system those insurance companies who criticize ObamaCare. Ed Morrissey has the details:

Does ObamaCare trump the First Amendment? HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius must think so. Yesterday, after apparently tiring of criticism of the new law from the companies it will eventually put out of business, Sebelius offered to expedite that process for those who don't take an opportunity to shut their mouths:
President Barack Obama's top health official on Thursday warned the insurance industry that the administration won't tolerate blaming premium hikes on the new health overhaul law.

"There will be zero tolerance for this type of misinformation and unjustified rate increases," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a letter to the insurance lobby.

"Simply stated, we will not stand idly by as insurers blame their premium hikes and increased profits on the requirement that they provide consumers with basic protections," Sebelius said. She warned that bad actors may be excluded from new health insurance markets that will open in 2014 under the law. They'd lose out on a big pool of customers, as many as 30 million people nationwide.

Let me see if I understand. Secretary Sebelius has threatened that all insurance companies that continue to publicly say ObamaCare will put them out of business will be, um, put out of business.

Quick side bet: how long before the first "non-astro-turfed", "spontaneous" and "totally-grassroots inspired" ACORN protest in front of these insurance companies occurs with full ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/CNBC/MSNBC/NYTIMES/WASHPOST/LATIMES coverage which will "just happen" to dovetail nicely with the obambi admin's "message"?

If you force the insurance companies to cover more people with more procedures, their outlays will increase. If their outlays increase, they will need to increase revenue. These increases are not unjustified. Just because our dearest Miss Sibelius bloviates that they are, does not make them so.

This is a clear-cut case of our leaders being utterly clueless as to how finances work - whether at home, in business, or in government.

Now. Perhaps Rance is noting the many comments which tend to imply that the Insurance companies are being threatened purely for commenting on policy. This is a good point, and I don't mean to belittle it. As I read it, Miss Seblius is not threatening for speech; rather for behavior, and thus we are not dealing with a 1st ammendment issue.

I note you quote Kathleen Sebelius, HHS Thug, about " unjustified rate increases. Kathleen Sebelius is not an health insurance expert. She is a political hack for the Obama regime.

However, reading the article, one finds this is a preemptive move. This is usually called blackmail or extortion. And you, Rance, apparently support it.

Considering this and other recent news about Obamacare, it appears this regime (and its supporters) believe in suppression of dissent.

The Congressional investigations next year will be quite fun to watch.

And pace myself: Our dearest Miss Sibelius does seem to threaten punishment for those companies simply sending what she refers to as "misinformation" -- and this is CLEARLY a 1st ammendment assault.

However, I think she is merely exhibiting her miseducation in the form of speaking "stupidly" in this case... I will give her the benefit of doubt, in the assumption that she is equating their actions (i.e., rate increases) with blaming their increases "... the requirement that..."

Also, she is playing fast and loose with definitions of basic protections.

In effect, this is simply another transfer of wealth from the rich to the poor (funneled through the hapless insurance companies), insuring that enough of the poor are on the receiving end to help sustain the political careers of our masters at the ballot boxes.

Miss Sibelius is certainly a socialist; However, it is clear that she is anything but an economist. Given that, she should certianly be kept very far away from anything that affects the U.S. economy -- as should the president, his staff, and the majority of Congress.

And once again pace Rance [#19]: Justified vs. Unjustified - but here, our dearest Miss Sibelius is pretty clearly implying that any attempt to blame the increases on the requirements for additional coverage, will be considered "unjustified" -- which is understandable, as considerable political hay was made from the assertions and implications that our current insurance plans would not be materially impacted; or conversely, that our costs would not go up (and in fact, would go down).

Now that the insurance companies are demonstrating reality, the face-eggs are apparent.

"Secretary Sebelius has threatened that all insurance companies that continue to publicly say ObamaCare will put them out of business..."

Wrong. What she said is (emphasis added for the sloiw thinkers):

"There will be zero tolerance for this type of misinformation and unjustified rate increases"

"Misinformation" and "unjustified" are key - maybe you should look them up. They are 4 and 5 syllable words so it's easy to see why you didn't understand their meaning.

and as to your comment here "ill be, um, put out of business. "

No, wrong again - poor thing - how sad.

What she said was "She warned that bad actors may be excluded from new health insurance markets that will open in 2014 under the law."

Not put out of business. Just not allowed to participate in the new markets if they lie and have unjustified rate increases.

Woooosh!!!

Don't you get it? All health insurance is going to be regulated by the feds before too long. How are we to interpret "zero tolerance for this type of misinformation"? It says "shut the fuck up."

Grow up and read for content:

. . . we will not stand idly by as insurers blame their premium hikes and increased profits on the requirement that they provide consumers with basic protections.

This means what it says, I suppose. We're not "not tolerating" the premium hikes and the profits. We're "not tolerating" the "blaming" for the premium hikes and profits. In other words, it's the bad talking that bothers the government, so shut the fuck up.

Besides, it's too early for Commissar Sebelius to be throwing her weight around. She's saying "shut the fuck up now, or we'll get you later."

You know, I inadvertantly let Rance set the parameters of the discussion. We argued over what our dear Miss Sebelius actually said, along with speculation as to what she meant.

Specifically, we argued over the terms "justfiied" and "unjustified."

Lost in this debate, was the simple concept that the Federal Government has no business deciding anything regarding what the insurance companies are allowed to do, or say, or charge.

Whether the rate increases are justified or not, It's not the job of the federal government to provide rate discipline - in point of fact, if the government would just get the hell out of the way, the market would provide far more effective discipline.

Our dear Miss Sebelius (and by extension, the Federal Government) needs to piss off, and if she (and they) won't, then they need to be helped out of their jobs, possibly with the assistance of two-by-fours applied to their lazy worthless asses.
