Why Britain is no longer Great

This news from England is a sure sign of that country's decline:

From 'guyliner' to 'manscara', more than three million men in Britain confess to regularly wearing make-up.

One in seven so-called metrosexual men use a variety of products traditionally aimed at women, such as eye-liner, fake tan and spot or blemish concealer, it has been revealed.

Of the men who use make-up, more than one in four do it at least once a week.
Long gone are the days when lipstick and eyeliner were reserved for women, as new findings show that 3.3 million men in the UK admit to wearing make-up or other cosmetic products.

The most popular products that male cosmetics-users use include hair dye, eye creams, anti-ageing products, eye liner and fake tan.

Other cosmetics used by men include spot concealer, face powder, nail varnish and even lipstick.

The inevitable by-product of a culture embracing liberalism, the emasculation of men.

May this sort of thing stay on that side of the Atlantic.

It was a survey on 1800 men... (Below threshold)
David Marcoe:

It was a survey on 1800 men conducted by a market research firm (an "online market research agency" as described on their site). Why are they publishing these findings and why did they conduct the survey? There has been a general push to normalize such things through commercial channels by inventing fake trends, such as the "metrosexual" (I challenge anyone to think of an example of such a person they knew or met).

The results just sound to damn high. Observation of polling over the last couple of years has taught me to use common sense. If a result doesn't sound right, it often isn't. Skimming their site, I see that in at least one case they used a mixture of online, telephone and face-to-face polling. Two of those methods are problematic and I can't imagine mixing them makes things any better. So, with all that taken under consideration, you can color me skeptical.

The problems in the UK boil... (Below threshold)
Sean P:

The problems in the UK boil down to runaway political correctness and excessive governmental restrictions of liberty, which have left the people powerless not only against encroaching radical Islam, but also common street thugs. Wearing guyliner is not a cause of that political correctness or oppressive political culture. Is it a symptom? Maybe, but don't forget that Charles Taylor's militia in Liberia used to wear lipstick -- as well as bright colored wigs -- and you certainly wouldn't want to mess around with THEM.

This is really nothing new.... (Below threshold)
Mac Lorry:

This is really nothing new. Young men are in a competitive sexual environment and to compete they become what they think women want. Think of it as the free market constantly evolving to meet customer demand be it the illusion of money, power, fame, or hot cars, body building, tough guy tattoos, turn-on fragrances, and many more gimmicks like human pheromones in a bottle. The market is different in urban society than say in places like Montana.

The definition of metrosexual is

a young, straight, sensitive urban man who is unashamed to enjoy good clothes, stylish living, the art of decorating, and improving his personal appearance

Metrosexual has nothing to do with "emasculation" on a physical level given the apparent high demand for Viagra and products that promise enlargement. What it does mean is the loss of traditional masculine values, the worth of which has become less apparent in urban society. However, that doesn't necessarily translate into the loss of core conservative values unless political conservatives make the link between core and social values themselves.

What the Tea Party has shown is that a majority of Americans believe in the core conservative values of limited government, low taxes, the free market, the rule of law, and personal responsibility. Where conservatives lose elections is on the social values. The Tea Party strategy is to win the political battle and hold that ground on core conservative values and leave the social battle to the marketplace of ideas. It may not be the ideal solution, but it's better than letting progressives win the political battle on social issues and then bankrupt the nation.

I can see the problem here. They include fake tan products as make up. I guarantee you that the large majority of those three million are using fake tanner. As a super pale people, and I mean pale, the british love fake tans, tanning salons and getting away from their sun deprived land and getting burned the first day on the beach.

Having lived in the UK I can tell you their men are as macho as any fellow you might find here. Especially the working class.

Folks, they also included hair dye too. In fact that was the #1 product used. Since they don't list the percentages for each product, I suspect that was the main "cosmetic" used, the most common one "worn to work" and they survey is an attempt to boost sales of other male cosmetics by painting a picture of "everybody else is doing it, why aren't you?" so common in advertising.

I don't use any of the products listed, but I think a lot of the fools covering up their grey to stay competitive at work and in the pick up bars would not consider themselves "metrosexual." They are also fooling themselves if they think others can't tell they dye their hair.

The usual nonsense. Britain lost its power because it became a debtor nation. It borrowed from the USA to defend its empire in WWI and II. As it waged wars, the debt increased and national power declined. This is what is happening to the USA now.

The Brits as a people have better character than most Americans, IMO. The Brits endured IRA bombings for years without unduly freaking out. Most Americans are willing to throw the Bill of Rights out to avoid any risk to their own asses.

Your correlation of sexual morality and national strength has no historical validity. Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome were by American standards grossly immoral, but endured as strong nations for hundreds or even thousands of years, as in the case of Egypt. The case of Spartan homosexuality is well known.

Sometimes Wizbang authors go for political commentary and analysis. And sometimes, as is the case with this post, they just latch onto some triviality in order to make the ridiculous non-point of the day. Way to go Rick, I think you win first place for today.

Let's not mention the fact that the always revered Founding Fathers were known to wear (GASP) wigs, or even supposedly powdered their hair (Washington). Now, tell me, how should that affect our understandings of the intellect, decisions, ideals, and actions of the founding fathers?

Also, any of you folks out there who happened to like any of the music of the 1970s-1980s (from punk new wave to the hair band metal stuff) were absolutely fans of men wearing make-up. Sorry to inform you. Not to mention the fact that all sorts of pundits, politicians, actors, and other performers wear make-up, get surgery, go to tanning salons, etc all the time.

But ya, go ahead and keep telling yourself that Rick has some real point here. Sure.

Here's suggestion for those interested in the mega issues of this topic. The Futurist blog has an article entitled "The Misandry Bubble." Here is the executive summary. "The Western World has quietly become a civilization that undervalues men and overvalues women, where the state forcibly transfers resources from men to women creating various perverse incentives for otherwise good women to conduct great evil against men and children, and where male nature is vilified but female nature is celebrated. This is unfair to both genders, and is a recipe for a rapid civilizational decline and displacement, the costs of which will ultimately be borne by a subsequent generation of innocent women, rather than men, as soon as 2020." It's quite a long article, with plenty of tables and charts of data. One may not agree with all the analysis and conclusions offered. But it's guaranteed to be an interesting read.
