Can we get an investigative exposé on the local mosque this guy attended? (UPDATED)

So that we can hear all about the peaceful sermons that were delivered there?

Anyone?

PortlandJihadist.jpg
Federal agents in a sting operation arrested a Somali-born teenager just as he tried blowing up a van he believed was loaded with explosives at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, authorities said.

The bomb was an elaborate fake supplied by the agents and the public was never in danger, authorities said.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested at 5:40 p.m. Friday just after he dialed a cell phone that he thought would set off the blast but instead brought federal agents and police swooping down on him.

Yelling "Allahu Akbar!" -- Arabic for "God is great!" -- Mohamud tried to kick agents and police after he was taken into custody, according to prosecutors.

"The threat was very real," said Arthur Balizan, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oregon. "Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale,"

The FBI affidavit that outlined the investigation alleges that Mohamud planned the attack for months, at one point mailing bomb components to FBI operatives, whom he believed were assembling the device.

It said Mohamud was warned several times about the seriousness of his plan, that women and children could be killed, and that he could back out, but he told agents: "Since I was 15 I thought about all this;" and "It's gonna be a fireworks show ... a spectacular show."

Mohamud, a naturalized U.S. citizen living in Corvallis, was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. A court appearance was set for Monday. Few details were available about him late Friday.

I look forward to those journalists who will dig into this guy's life and what it is that motivated him.  Perhaps a 60 Minutes piece on where the kid worshipped.  An interview with his Imam.

In other words, pretend the kid belonged to a radical Christian sect and go to town.

We'll wait.  And wait.  And wait.

UPDATE: TIME weighs in with the first attempt to find out who this terrorist is... and not a word about his mosque or his Imam.  Things that make you go hmmm....

I agree. This is EXACTLY what should be done--focus on the networks and connections that this kid has--who he has been in contact with, what motivated him, who influenced him, and how.

Since he's nominally Muslim, this will be ignored. It'll be swept under the rug and forgotten by Tuesday.

If he'd been a Christian, no matter whether he was mainstream or some aberrant sect like the Westboro ... jerks - he'd get a lot more coverage and the leftists pundits would be hopping up and down and foaming at the mouth going "See! See! See the violence inherent in Christianity!"

But since he's Somali, and black, and Islamic - that'll pretty much preclude coverage of him. After all, we must be sensitive to such things, Bruce. Don't you agree?

Interesting that there's no comments allowed on that article over on MSNBC. There's comments on Fox, though. Might not want to read them, Bruce - they'd be distressing to someone as culturally elite as you.

BTW, Bruce - where do you think this story will be by mid-day tomorrow... or Tuesday?

NYTimes will have found something else and this will have dropped below their radar, and MSNBC will really have this below the fold.

In fact, it'll be interesting to see if it's on the front page of MSNBC by tomorrow morning. I'm thinking the Irish Austerity Plan demonstrations are going to still have the picture lead, and the secondary will be Black Friday analysis...

Well, you could be right about it dropping off the radar screen soon, Mr Lawson. It IS a story about a failed plot, where apparently there was never any danger of an actual event, since the "explosives" were supplied by Federal agents.

But I suppose the press is supposed to talk about this story for weeks and weeks. Why, I don't know, but I guess you'll be along directly to tell me.

By the way, stories of actual or failed attempts at terrorism that DO matter are indeed still alive in the Lamestream Media, such as the Christmas Day Bomber or the Fort Hood massacre, so again, where is the analogy? Pretty lame attempt at playing the victim card here, is all I'm saying.

Islam is an evil violent ideology that is inherently incompatible with Western culture.

Goddamned right they should! When discussing Islamic terrorism the perpetrator's religion has some passing relevance, yes? It goes to motivation for the crime under discussion. We're not talking about some obscure footnote regarding the guy, whether he preferred Ginger over Mary Ann or some such. His religion is the driver for the crime; it should appear in the lead paragraph, indeed, in the headline, which should read, "Muslim student arrested in foiled terror plot," or something like that.

Yes john you are of course correct the media would never report something they didn't know for sure was a fact...... right? I mean they never ever get anything wrong because they didn't bother to get the facts before they reported something. They seemed to have the fact that this peice of human scum yelled Allah Akbar but couldn't figure out he was a muslim terrorist? The way I see it the motivation for the act is the twisted view of Islam that should be up front in any reporting of these sorts of actions. If the idiot that shot Dr Tiller did so because god told him to that is a relevant fact, in fact it is the relevant fact. If the band of loonies that make up the Westboro "church" do what they do because of their twisted view of Christianity then that is the relevant fact and should be the focus of any reporting on them.

Absolutely fucking nothing would have happened except that the FBI was involveed. They recruited the dumb kid. They designed his "bomb plot." They gave him actual explosives training. And they build and handed the dumb kid a "bomb." Then they issue a press release on how they thwarted their own "bomb plot." Just a scam to make the bureau look better. Hoover may be dead, but his bullshit PR tactics live on. Remember the failed bomb plot of the NYC tunnels right after the first WTC bombing? The only radical in that "Islamic cell" was the FBI plant.
