Totenburg backpedals

Now she says she was defending Christmas:

Nina Totenberg does not hate Christmas!

The NPR legal correspondent created a web frenzy with a seemingly dismissive reference to the holiday on "Inside Washington" last weekend. During a debate about tax cuts and the omnibus bill, Totenberg threw in an off-hand anecdote:

"I was at -- forgive the expression - a Christmas party at the Department of Justice," she said, going on to explain how guests there were worried about the impact of spending cuts.

"Forgive the expression"? Another salvo in the War on Christmas!

...

Totenberg's quote comes in the midst of a complex examination of the federal deficit with fellow panelists and moderator/executive producer Gordon Peterson. "I didn't even notice it," he told us Tuesday. The reason her remark didn't appear on Sunday's show? Panelists tape additional commentary for the public television version that is routinely edited out to make room for commercials on Sunday. Happens every week; no conspiracy here.

Plus, added a puzzled Peterson: Nina adores this season. Years ago, when they taped the show in a studio with a piano, she and Carl Rowan would belt out carols every December. "I know she loves Christmas," Peterson said. "I've seen her at Christmas parties -- if you'll pardon the expression."

Then we reached Totenberg herself during her "Christmas vacation" (her term) in Jamaica. Turns out her critics got it completely wrong: She was, she says, defending Christmas. The DOJ celebration was officially dubbed a "holiday" party, and she was gently mocking that generic designation. "I think that's kind of silly because it's obviously a Christmas party," she told us. "I was tweaking the Department of Justice. It was a touch of irony at the expense of the Justice department, not at the expense of Christmas."

As for the bloggers who were so quick to judge -- without bothering to ask her what she meant: "Jeesh, these folks need a life -- and perhaps a touch of the Christmas spirit, as well."

Credible?

I'll report, you decide.

GarandFan is still right. She has just admitted that she is so totally encapsulated in the "DC culture" that some of the things she says are just too esoteric for anyone outside outside of the culture to understand. And she's not apologizing for it either.

Thumbs up GarandFan, you nailed it.

Ok, let's examine the evidence here- Ms. Totenberg goes to "Christmas parties" (she even has witnesses!). She "belts out" Christmas Carols at said parties; and she takes her Christmas holiday in Jamaica. Hmmm... Yep, it is true; Nina Totenberg definitely understands the true meaning of Christmas, and was unfairly attacked by you mean, Christmasphobic tea partiers. You all should be ashamed of yourselves!

Gee Nina, maybe if you didn't have a history of hating conservatives and Christians and ridiculing their views and beliefs we would have understood you right the first time. As it is we took your statement in light of your past and made a decision based on the information we had, which told us that you are a hateful, intolerant jerk.

Merry Christmas to you too.

This is Nina showing her true liberal credentials. They know, deep in their heart of hearts, that they really aren't that special, nor are they really that intelligent, but if they stick to the liberal line and show disdain for anything outside their narrow, mean little worlds, then they know they will be perceived (in their own little worlds at least) as being smart and special.

Funny how that isn't working any longer. We "great unwashed" are a whole lot smarter than they thought we were and we've gotten pretty fed up with their pathetic schtick!

And since it's Christmas, I won't tell the spineless "RINO" critters who gave the p.o.s. in the White House a seeming victory in the last hours of the Congressional session what I think of them, but it isn't much and good riddance to those who have been defeated and fair warning to those who will be in 2012!

I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt on this one. But, Ms. Totenburg has a long history of expressing the liberal viewpoint on a variety of issues. We judge people's words on what we've known of them and it's no surprise that this was misinterpreted given her past. There was nothing in her statement to indicate that she was "gently mocking" the DOJ.

I'm an atheist, though a conservative-leaning one. I didn't really even care about the whole Xmas/Holidays/WTFever season "debate." It simply didn't impact me. But liberals like this little splitter have forced me to choose sides, even though I've not got a dog in the fight: I side with the Christmas people on this issue. First, because THEY DIDN'T START IT, but more importantly because I'm sick to death of smarmy, snarky, self-inflated liberal coonts like Totenberg. Crawl back under your rock, Nina -- and take your insincere "apology" with you.

Totenberg is a whirling dervish of agitprop, which makes her well qualified as a mouthpiece at NPR.

This is the same Totenberg, who in 1995, suggested justice would be served if Jesse Helms and his grandchildren contracted AIDS.

This is the same Totenberg who desired that the Democrats who supported extending the Bush era tax cuts be purged out of the Party.

This is the same Totenberg, who thought the Robert's court "scandalous" for its 'Citizens United' ruling....

We do not bother "to ask her what she meant," Mr. Gordon Peterson, because words mean things, and since Totenberg is a 'professional', we give her the benefit of the doubt that she can spew her back handed assessments & bigotry with our second guesses, thank you very much.

Horseshit. How is this on us to ask what she meant. We did that little thing called listening to what she said. If she can't be clear maybe she needs to find a new line of work, because it was mighty clear what she meant.

I'm so sick and tired of having to ask people three times what they meant before criticizing. Funny how that standard doesn't seem to apply to the far left when they throw a temper tantrum over what a conservative says.

1) I Still Agree with the first comment in the first thread, UOG in this one, and think they both sum up most of the subsequent comments in a very succinct manner. Just adding a STILL in the original is the only needed touch.

2) LocoBreath provides a choice few tidbits from the volumes Totenbergisms there are to choose from. NPR archives or Google can be your friend on this one.

3) Her explanation rings potentially true, but she STILL deserves all the negative attention she can get, as NOW is the time to remind everyone, like LocoBreath has, of excellent Totenbergisms that reveal her true nature. Maybe that would be a subject of a new thread, challenging readers to come up with different examples.

Eric:

Her latest explanation doesn't make sense. If she was tweaking the DOJ, then why beg for forgiveness? Why not just say it was a Christmas Party and leave it at that?

Begging forgiveness for using the term implies that you find the term distasteful.

If she was really just tweaking the DoJ, then what she said was easy to misinterpret. It is not out of line for people to infer that she was tweaking the term Christmas, instead of tehe DoJ. That puts the blame on her.

Why not just say that she used a poor choice of words and say that she is sorry that people took offense as a result?

If she was tweaking the DOJ then she should have known that it was not general knowledge that the DOJ termed their party a "Holiday Party".

Or is this just another smug liberal way of rubbing our noses in the fact that she deems herself far superior to the rest of us due to her political conections and insider knowledge?

Frankly, her excuse makes her look like more of an ass regardless.

If she was tweeking the DOJ she would have said "I was at the DOJ holiday - I mean Christmas party" and left off the "excuse the term" nonsense ...

Followup question ... What is Nina doing at a DOJ Christmas party ? Is she married to a DOJ employee ? Because every Christmas party I've ever been to has been employee's and spouses only ...
Did US taxpayers just foot the bill for her attendance at said party ?
