I understand they trying somewhat to “bring” us all together which is OK. However they also are pushing a liberal agenda of “it takes a village” and it can “only” be done as a community. Memorials are not a time to be pushing political agendas.

Actually I think it's because it's Arizona - hence there is a Hispanic influence.
Here in Kalifornia, whenever a gangbanger 'retires', they all show up at the funeral wearing "commemorative T-shirts", usually a picture of the deceased along with their gang moniker and the gang's name.
It's quite a quaint custom. Even the black gang members are doing it now.

Hey, the t-shirts were a nice touch for a memorial service, don't you think?
Where were to pom-poms and the cheerleaders?
Did the scoreboard light-up with an audience poll score?

Rather than spend money on an article of clothing, that will only be a constant reminder of a mass killing and I would think, never worn, perhaps an "adult" could have suggested the money establish a scholarship in the victims names instead. The t-shirts were paid for by the university, weren't they? T-shirts?

..nothing new under the sun...
"I think George Washington was right when he said, in his 1796 Farewell Address, that political parties “are likely, in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” He went on to argue:
The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty."

Unfortunately, Washington was right. Even by the end of his 2nd Administration, the basis for political 'parties' had pretty much formed. There was even a threat posted in a newspaper - something to the effect that the person could not wait until (Inauguration Day) when MR WASHINGTON was no longer president. But, the mission accomplished banner, a tradition on naval ships coming home, is still blamed on Bush 43, so, even if you're correct, I have 0 sympathy. There is no generations' long tradition at universities to hand out tacky t-shirts at memorials for the White House to say they were deferring to.

So let me get this straight. The tshirts weren't appropriate, unless it really was done by the university, except if it was then you still won't concede, because... well, liberals blamed Bush for Mission Accomplished. Is that it? Way to have the courage of your convictions. Apparently "appropriateness" is determined solely by your spite.
Oh, by the way...
[Bush] said the White House had nothing to do with the banner; [White House press secretary Dana Perino] later said the ship's crew asked for the sign and the White House staff had it made by a private vendor.
