Your daily dose of stupidity

Rachel Maddow, the Oxford-educated intellectual doyenne of MSNBC, actually said this during a recent episode of HBO's "Real Time":

STEVE MOORE, WALL STREET JOURNAL: The other tragedy, David, of what's happened in the last 20 years is the reason Reykjavik fell apart was because Reagan didn't want to give up SDI or Star Wars. And here we are, you know, what 20 years later and we still don't have a missile defense system in this country.

DAVID STOCKMAN: We shouldn't.

RACHEL MADDOW, MSNBC: They've never worked.

MOORE: I don't want to get blown up.

MADDOW: You know what? Here's the country, here's the kind of thing you put over like a cake to protect the cake from flies. Missiles don't work that way. That's the whole idea of SDI. We'll protect ourselves by shooting missiles at other missiles. It's never worked in a test. We spent billions on it.

MOORE: It's worked.

MADDOW: And anybody who understands this knows it can never work.

MOORE: If you don't think it works, then why did the Russians not want us to do it?

MADDOW: The Russians were very happy to sign this thing.

MOORE: No they weren't. They didn't want us to do SDI because they knew they didn't want us to blow up their missiles.

MADDOW: You know what? If you think you can shoot the bullet with the other bullet, you can have an awesome life in Annie Oakley's side show, but you should not be in charge of billions of dollars of the defense budget. It's such a hysterical fantasy. I love it.

Noel Sheppard at Newsbusters.org has a nice takedown, with video.  Sheppard wryly notes that Maddow must have somehow missed the entire Gulf war, when US Patriot missiles were used to defend Israel against SCUD missiles launched by Saddam Hussein.  Patriot missiles were also used (with much improved performance) as part of the anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense system during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

One can certainly argue the merits of a full-scale ballistic missile defense system, but stating that missile to missile interception has "never worked" is flat-out wrong.

Well there was a recent article about the general worth of a college education. Apparently Maddow was one of those short-changed.

#1 son works for Raytheon. Specifically in missile defense. They've had several WELL PUBLICIZED successes. To include the shoot-down of an out-of-control satellite - something the system was never designed for - and which required a lot of re-programming on very short notice.

Yep, Rachel is one of the 'educated elite', but obviously doesn't read much beyond her own press releases.

The safeguard system that was built early on in the 70's was so accurate using the sprint missile that the radar had to be degraded in order for it to work. The problem then, was that the interceptors used nukes to effect a kill. The interceptors used now are much more accurate and use a hit to kill method which absolutely destroys the inbound warhead.

The whole concept with Reagan wasn't that it would work or not work, it was to psyche out the Russians. They only had to think it would work for the gambit to succeed. The fact that it literally worked, after much development, is just icing on the cake.

Once again we see the left demonstrate that 'truth' to them has nothing to deal with facts. The narrative overrides all factual evidence. The 'truth' that missile defense can never work supersedes the fact that we have conducted multiple successful trials and the fact that our enemies desperately want us to stop development of a technology they are not yet capable of producing themselves.

RE: "Rachel Maddow, the Oxford-educated intellectual" who believed that SDI couldn't ever work.

Which shows that people like Maddow is just plain stupid - as in cannot learn. What SDI did and didn't do, and what SDI could and couldn't ever do aren't the issue. It's not relevant. It's what your opponent thinks that you can do.

A poor poker player plays his cards and the probabilities. Good players play their opponent. He may have better cards than you have, but if your bets tell a story, and if he believes that story, you can get him to muck the winning hand.

The Soviets gave up the arms race because we threatened to take the arms race into an area where their methods could not possibly give them parity. We won. Idiots like Maddow may claim it was all a bluff, but even if it was, I'll take a winning bluff any day. He/she/it doesn't understand the way that the game's played.

With many friends that work in the industry for a laundry list of companies I can assure Ms Madcow that indeed, we DO have multiple systems that can nail inbound targets accurately.

Hell, there are video's of recent tests that were pushed out to the MSM showing the actual hits for that matter.

"SDI doesn't work", "SDI can never work" have been unquestioned articles of faith on the left for nearly 20 years. Maddow is simply preaching that old time religion.
