CBS News reporter Lara Logan attacked, sexually assaulted in Cairo

amd_logan2.jpg

From The Los Angeles Times:

CBS News correspondent Lara Logan is recovering in an American hospital this week after being sexually assaulted and beaten by a mob in Egypt's Tahrir Square late on Friday.

The same day that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, Logan was surveying the mood of anti-Mubarak protesters for a "60 Minutes" story when she and her team "were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration," CBS said in a statement Tuesday. The network said that a group of 200 people were then "whipped into a frenzy," pulling Logan away from her crew and attacking her until a group of women and Egyptian soldiers intervened.

Logan flew back to the United States the next morning.

She is currently recuperating in a US hospital.  CBS News has not released any more details about the attack.

Sadly though, the story doesn't end there:

As Mary Elizabeth Williams wrote earlier this evening over at Salon, several reporters and bloggers have "decided to hinge the story" of Lara Logan's rape "on the blond reporter's looks."  Simone Wilson's LA Weekly post mocks Logan's beauty, saying, "Egyptian protesters apparently consummated their newfound independence by sexually assaulting the blonde reporter."  Consummated?  Unconscionable.

The Mofo Politics blog featured a post on February 3rd, saying, "OMG if I were her captors and there were no sanctions for doing so?  I would totally rape her."  Here's how they've edited the post since: "Super funny joke deleted in light of the sad news that Lara Logan actually was raped in Egypt.  Can I just say, however, that I sooo totally called this."

Most shockingly, though, Nir Rosen, a fellow at NYU (who will hopefully be fired by the time many of you read this in the morning) continually bashed Logan all over his Twitter feed, saying she "had to outdo anderson" by getting raped, adding, "sometimes we have to find humor in the small things."

I could re-write all of his stomach-turning quotes here, but I honestly don't think I'd be able to without throwing up and crying at the same time.

You can judge for yourself how big an ass-wipe Nir Rosen is, by viewing the screen captures of his Twitter feed at NationalReview.com, where they were posted by Jim Geraghty.

At least the left is finally being consistent about its misogyny. They support the animal islamists who promote the abuse and virtual enslavement of women and now that a prominent woman has been raped by these animals their first reaction is to blame her.

The left is no different from the radical islamists. It's about time that we recognized that fact.

1. The animals that raped her should be shot. She did not deserve that. I feel sorry for her.
2. You do not send a female supermodel into a riot. You doubly do not send one into a riot in a misogynist, well known woman-abusing culture. It is just goddam asinine to do so. WTF did she think was going to happen?

One can believe in both 1. and 2. at the same time and it is not 'blaming the victim', fwiw. It's just common sense.

There are barbaric places in the world. To ignore that fact is folly.

The above mentioned blogging scum making fun of her ought to be named and shamed, too.

That said, the Western media believe that they have this bubble of invincibility that hovers over them wherever they go, and those editors that assign field reporters to hot spots rely upon that Western conceit.

When it comes to stories from Islam World, editors want nothing more than to shove Western women in the face of locals to both emasculate the locals and reassure Starbucks liberals that women can do everything.

Now comes this event. Anyone with a brain knows that the true revolutionaries in Egypt are the Muslim Brotherhood and that they are just a bit anti-Western. A competent story editor would have said that sending a woman into that mess, especially a woman in Western dress, was a VERY BAD IDEA. Unfortunately for this poor woman the Western need to show that we don't need to honor local cultural mores put this woman in a very bad place.

This was not the first report of reporters being attacked by the crowd. Why did CNN not hire private security to protect the crew?
Rape is hardly ever about beauty it about power and control of the victim.
Any American female in that crowd could be victimized.

One does notice that they minimize the attack on this women. When a few falsely accused students of attacked a black women, we heard how All White males of privilege are racist rapist.
When it 200 people gang raping a women in Public it just a a bad element. Notice no ethnicity or summary judgment passed even when it is one of there own.
We have people putting other people in harms way with no protection because it does not fit into their world view.

Ultimately, this is about the fact that egyptians are like any other muslim culture in that they consider women to be property and western women in particular to be whores and prostitutes. A woman alone is therefore asking to be raped and the expectation is that she will be and that by going out in public she is actually asking for the gang rape to happen.

This is a culture that would not try her assailants for rape but try her for adultery and sentence her to death for it.

The left would tell us that their culture is no different from ours. What that tells me is that the left is either incredibly ignorant or that they actually believe the same way the muslims do. It's hard to tell which is the case.

This is a very unfortunate result of the conservative element in a culture (Muslim right wing nut jobs in this case) being whipped into a frenzy. It's the same kind of lunatic fringe mentality that encourages bombing abortion clinics, and encouraging violence like the way Sarah Palin's comments likely led to the shooting in Arizona last month. Attention those of you dumber than a rock: NOBODY whether politically inclined to the left or to the right agrees with or sympathizes with these radicals, or with rape. Who people are, their ethical and moral beliefs are not intrincicaly linked to their political leaning. Believing "all liberals are bad," or "all conservatives are dumb," is just the way you fel better about your own beliefs by deamonizing people who don't politically agree with you. If you base your responses and your judgement of others on their politics, you are probably morally degenerate and certainly spiritually bankrupt. You are part of the problem.

Does anyone know if she was raped? I've seen that word in some editorials and comments but not in any actual news reports which use the phrase "sexually assaulted". Don't forget that in US parlance, swatting a female on the butt is considered 4th degree assault.

(The fact that she is/was in the hospital cannot be used as proof since the reports do say she was beaten).

I am trying to not blaming the victim, but if her media bosses had tried to block her ability to report on this situation and used the excuse that it was too dangerous because she was a woman, she would have been able to sue their ***'* off because of gender discrimination.

I don't think that makes all that much difference here. Being trapped alone in a crowd of 200 men, all of whom were focused on her, who were keeping her from returning to her crew while yelling "Jew, jew" as they physically and sexually assaulted her was probably very traumatic for her.

Hypocracy noted. On the other hand, they have "the story" on this one locked up. Unless she is so traumatized she can never again step in front of a camera, when she does, it will be with CBS and it will further her career. There is nothing wrong with that, she took the risks as part of a career choice, if there is any potential benefit to her out of this, she deserves it.

Of course all of the men are coming out in droves to defend this bimbo. Oh sorry, adulteress.

Ah the power of large breasts and blond hair. I think part of the problem is A. Pornography with millions of women who look just like LL that's been spread all over the world via Playboy and the internet. and B. The foreign prostitues mostly from Eastern Europe who have spread themselves all over the world. At least in Korean and Egypt, but I've heard they're everywhere else, too.

There are tons of women and girls RIGHT in the US raped, sexually molested and harassed every day. I personally have been peeped, catcalled and followed by perverts in GASP yep America.

Tons of women who do not look like pornographic actresses, nor who have unprotected [email protected] with other women's husbands are sexually assaulted every day...but apparently they're not worthy of defense.

Sorry, I have more sympathy for the wife who almost committed suicide because her husband left her and their child for Logan. I also have sympathy for women who speak Arabic and are culturally sensitive but who did not get the position of "chief correspondent" to the Middle East because they weren't blond or busty.

GaramelTheCaramel:

BTW, the feminist untruth that I was also fed in school about "Rape is hardly ever about beauty it about power and control of the victim" is not true. The truth is probably scarier.

Sexual assault stems from sexual desire. Period. As part of my healing process, I did research on child molestation and as sick as it sounds, child molesters are also sexually attracted to their victims and will prey on childen they find "beautiful" etc.

I personally think the reams of pornographic material featuring blond, white women probably played some sort of role in the attack.
