Why didn't they hit up the local mosque?

Because they're cowards:

The city of Chicago ordered its police force not to enforce the law against a mob of homosexualist activists who disrupted Mass at the Holy Name Cathedral to protest "anti-gay bigots" who support the Church's teaching on marriage.

The Gay Liberation Network staged the rally on the eve of Valentine's Day, shouting and chanting loudly as churchgoers entered to celebrate Sunday Mass. The demonstration's primary target was Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, who has spoken out in defense of traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Protesters had staged a similar disruption around the same time last year.

In response to the protest, George, who was not present at the cathedral, acknowledged that the issue is deeply emotional on both sides but, "No matter the issue, Catholics should be able to worship in peace, without fear of harassment."

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) released a video of the protest showing rainbow flag-waving protesters shouting and holding signs stating, "It's time to stop being nice to anti-gay bigots." "The Catholic leadership has ranged itself against equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community for too long!" declared one homosexualist protester. Others called for an end to government cooperation with the Church's charitable activities on the basis of its "bigoted" views.

Churchgoers withstood the angry protest passively. One said that the pastor present for the Mass "was almost attacked and was called a bigot." The Chicago Tribune reported that there was a small counter-protest defending traditional marriage and Cardinal George.

While it was illegal for the protesters to disrupt a religious service, the Chicago City Council announced that police would not enforce the law in this instance - a move that NOM castigated.

"It's outrageous that the city of Chicago stepped in and basically told police not to enforce a law for this one occasion," said NOM president Brian Brown.

It's not outrageous... it's the Chicago way... and they're simply following the precedent set by the President of the United States.

This will only get worse.

Yes, I'm awaiting the day these gays "protest" at a mosque.

But I'm not holding my breath.

As for not 'enforcing' the law, I'm sure Bruce can get behind that. After all, it's not like 'defending' the law.

It's because the gays know that the Catholic church will turn the other cheek, while the muslims will cut their throats.

Bullying a passive target is not brave or risk taking, it's just bullying. They pull these stunts because they know that they can get away with them. If they tried to do it with a mosque their first protest would be their last.

Jim Addison:

I've never HEARD of a City Council with the power to suspend enforcement of the laws. There have been times police have declined to arrest protesters on public property, but private property owners deserve protection, even if they are the Catholic Church.

I'm with GarandFan - tell 'em to take their dog-and-pony show down the road to the mosque and disrupt Friday prayers.

Will Rahm join his 'buddies' in protest?

I've never heard of a President brazenly ignoring constitutional law either. But with Barry we are undergoing just such things..

Mayor Daley never let something as insignificant as the law or even the constitution get in the way of what he wanted. When he wanted to convert Meigs Field from an airport to a park he just sent in construction equipment in the dead of night to tear up the runway. Since it would cost too much to repair the runway he was spared the legal battle to shut down the airport and cancel the lease.

I'm certain that Rahm and Barry believe in the same tactics. Laws are for punishing your enemies and never for holding you back from doing anything you want.

James H:

The story linked made it sound like it was adjacent to church property, not on church property.

And, yes, the location is important. If they're off church property, there's no trespassing. If they're inside church property, they're trespassing. If they're within the church property and yelling during the ceremony, it becomes something else.

Each of these is a different breach of decorum and/or the law.

Right to Life protestors cannot get withing so many feet of an abortion clinic (depends on jurisdiction) so that nobody has to cross a picket to enter.
Not so Catholics going to Mass in Chicago, it would seem.

A Theist:

The homos are terrified of the Muslims. In older (and better) days, they wouldn't have even thought of protesting anywhere near a church. Want to know why our government and large corporations are sucking up to LBGTs? Google "New World Order" and wake up. It's time to bring back the good old days in the churches. Don't be passive. Christ was no wimp - why should Christians be ashamed to stand up for what's right?
