This is a terrible event. I offered up a prayer for the poor souls there. I sure hope that God wants to hear from me.

What struck me was that despite the violence of the earthquake their buildings stood. It is a testimony to their engineering ability that there were no significant colapses. I just think of so many other earthquakes where we see countless buildings that have fallen and how weeks are spent pulling people from the wreckage.
Certainly thousands have lost their lives but they saved so many more with their forethought and brilliant engineering.

You know, something like this makes the squabbles we've got here look like ... nothing. It's a real shot of perspective.
They've been planning for this for decades - as Jim says - and all that planning paid off.

Both the earthquake and tsunami damages are terrible, but the footage I've seen of the tsunami is absolutely horrifying.
The Japanese are probably the most earthquake/tsunami-prepared country in the world and that has probably just saved countless thousands of lives yesterday.
