U. S. Navy and Air Force engage Libyan Vessels in Misrata

Destroying two and causing the third to be abandoned.

US Navy P-3C, USAF A-10 and USS Barry Engage Libyan Vessels

USS MOUNT WHITNEY, At Sea (NNS) -- A U.S. Navy P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft and guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52), engaged Libyan Coast Guard vessel Vittoria and two smaller craft March 28.

The vessels were engaged after confirmed reports that Vittoria and accompanying crafts were firing indiscriminately at merchant vessels in the port of Misrata, Libya.

The P-3C fired at Vittoria with AGM-65F Maverick missiles, rendering the 12-meter patrol vessel ineffective and forcing it to be beached after multiple explosions were observed in the vicinity of the port.

Two smaller Libyan craft were fired upon by the A-10 using its 30mm GAU-8/ Avenger cannon, destroying one and forcing the other to be abandoned.

Barry provided situational awareness for the aircraft by managing the airspace and maintaining the maritime picture.

The P-3C, A-10 and Barry are currently supporting operations for Joint Task Force Odyssey Dawn.

Joint Task Force Odyssey Dawn is the U.S. Africa Command task force established to provide operational and tactical command and control of U.S. military forces supporting the international response to the unrest in Libya and enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1973. UNSCR 1973 authorizes all necessary measures to protect civilians in Libya under threat of attack by Qadhafi regime forces.

I seem to have missed the announcement of the no steaming zone, not that these vessels did not deserve to be so engaged based on their indiscriminate firing into non-combatants...

Drury @ 1,

I kid you not. USS John Barry (DDG-52) is the fourth ship to bear the name of the Irish born U. S. Commodore who commanded ships in both the Continental Navy and the United States Navy and who was the most senior officer and de facto commander of the United States Navy until his death in 1803.

Mycroft:

Depending on response tme, it might have been cheaper to use the A-10 cannons instead of the missiles. It depends on several factors that we don't have access to. Bottom line, those missiles worked, and the Libyan Navy is short a few vessels now.

At least they didn't use the missiles from the Barry, those cost way more then $150K apiece. Though, if she could have gotten there, the Libyan vessels would have made great target practice for the Barry's 5 inch cannon.

  1. The larger vessel could have mounted rudimentary SAM or AAA, thus posing a potential threat to the A-10 and making a stand off missile a prudent idea.
  2. One wouldn't want to use a Harpoon or a Standard Missile in a crowded harbor.
  3. Nor would one really want to use the 5"/54 (127mm) Gun (cannon are smooth bore weapons, btw) given they actually carry a larger bursting charge with a greater blast and fragmentation radii than the "larger" 155mm artillery rounds.

The larger ship was most likely a 32 meter craft. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/7911177/mondays_naval_battle_ends_badly_for.html?cat=62

The Barry would have been foolish to fire into a crowded harbor. As odd as it sounds, the two aircraft were far more capable of identifying and attacking the Libyans. This may be the first time a P-3 has ever launched a missile in combat and one of very few times for an A-10 attacking shipping.

As I said, we did not have all the information, so I said maybe.

2.One wouldn't want to use a Harpoon or a Standard Missile in a crowded harbor.

And what I said was we didn't want to use them due to cost as well, when cheaper weapons would have given the same result. And possibly more training.

3.Nor would one really want to use the 5"/54 (127mm) Gun (cannon are smooth bore weapons, btw) given they actually carry a larger bursting charge with a greater blast and fragmentation radii than the "larger" 155mm artillery rounds.

I've fired a 5"/54. Who said to use a bursting shell? And the other thing is that if you get close, you can fire without hitting anything else. But I go back to saying maybe. We don't have enough details to know if that was feasible.
