The President's deficit 'reduction' speech

I tried to listen. Truly I did.

But half way through I could not listen to his neo-bolshevik, revisionist hyperbole that just droned on and on.

It's like this guy believes he's totally removed from the massive tripling of the deficit he's cultivated while in office, and that he just dropped down from the mother ship to survey the damage and offer some advice....

"Greetings, lesser non-light beings.

I come from the galaxy Soetoro. Let me be clear: that big eared clown you've seen running through your 'just down right mean' town that used to be respected by other towns, and throwing rocks through all the plate glass windows, wasn't me.

My brilliant plan to correct the damage in your 'just down right mean' town that used to be respected by other towns is to purchase new plate glass, at exorbitant cost, and pay lesser non-light beings inflated public union wages to install it.

All costs, of course, will be born by rich people; Eeebil, mean rich people who desire that all windows remain broken so granny, her dog, and working families will be plagued by hunger and pestilence. Also Nazis.

Because that's what eeebil rich people do. All day. They wish for that.

Let me be clear. I will not let this happen. Because that big eared clown you've seen running through your 'just down right mean' town that used to be respected by other towns, and throwing rocks through all the plate glass windows, wasn't me.

As proof, here's some near beer and Kobe beef. Paid for with other people's money. And you're racist if you don't like it. Read the new civility memo.

I will now return to galaxy Soetoro, and let lesser non light beings figure out the details."

You missed the parts about comparing his 12 year plan with Boner's 10 year plan, the 7 years of more spending to be followed finally by massive reductions in spending for the last 5 years to get to 400 somethingorothers less than Boner's 4,400 somethingortothers in just 10 years, but that's probably where your head started exploding right there.

I can't think of any other president in my lifetime, Republican or Democrat, who could have given this same speech and not have been met with derision. Of course, I don't think any other president would have allowed a speech like this to appear on the TelePrompTer in the first place. Yet, I am sure we will hear from some of those Obama supporters who post here who think this was the rhetoric of a man of true vision.

We've never had a president like this one. Untested, unprepared, un-American. He is the disaster nobody knew to fear - although had someone been doing their job, he would have been more thoroughly vetted, although Bill O'Reilly says he was definitely born here so we should all be reassured (in a pig's ear)!

Total tax revenue from income taxes last year was about $1.4 trillion. $1.21 trillion of that came from those making 67K agi or above.

In other words they could double the amount of taxes owed for every individual in the country and still not even make up for the projected deficit for this year alone.

Taxes are not too low. Spending is too high.

Dave D -

Obama's gone to bulk purchases of red ink, while Bush was still getting it retail. (But seriously, I'd rather he was still getting the occasional 5 gallons in 3 oz bottles as opposed to Obama getting supertanker-sized quantities delivered on a weekly basis...)

BTW, here's the chart of projected deficits under Obama. If the curve we'd been following under Bush to 2007 had continued, we would have been running a surplus (and the Dems would have been agitating to spend it) in '09.

But the Dems got in with the '06 election, and in '07...

Well, see for yourself. Lots of constituencies needed to be placated, after all. FY 2008 was really good (about $400 bil) and in FY 2009 with Dems in the House, Senate and the Oval Office? Hell, you might just as well have given them the keys to the mint.

Wait. We did, didn't we?

So now we've got a situation that's gone from merely bad and self-correcting to "OMFG, what the hell did you DO?!?" status. Raising taxes simply won't do the job cutting that size of a deficit. And even at 90%, we couldn't make up the deficit by taxing the rich.

I've posted this before - but the numbers are solid. We can't eat the rich, there's simply not enough of them to make a difference long-term.

And short term, we HAVE to cut spending. We have to cut it by a LOT, not do cute little tricks like calling a decrease in a programmed increase a 'cut'. "Woo! We saved so much by cutting the increase on West Chillicothe Snail Darter Research from 10% to 5%!" Yeah. Sure you did.

And all the 'green' research? We're starving for money and energy NOW - dump the subsidies for that, research better pollution controls, and start using our own resources instead of (for example) paying $2 billion to Brazil so THEY can drill and SELL us their oil. (Still haven't figured that one out - pay them to develop something we'll have to buy? WTF?)

Washington hasn't got it through their heads yet (in either party, though Ryan's close to it) that what they're wanting to do - keeping the status pretty much quo, without rocking the boat too much - is completely unsustainable, and is killing the country. Something has got to change, or we're really, really screwed.

(And I don't think either party's got the balls to do the job. We're talking major pruning of non-essential branches of government, and a major rethinking of how we do things. Neither party wants the responsibility.)

WHen Bush was in office the democrats complaint was that he did not spend enough on X, Y and Z. When they Got power in 2006 they started the spending Binge and continued till today.

Medicare Part D was bad and it help to eat the HIGER Revenue that the government received. National Defenses, infrastructure are what we should be spending on. We have all these other government programs that eat away at that. Their is constitutional mandate to wage ware. Their is not one for welfare, DOE and all the other programs. The Navy , Army Marines have been here from founding of this country. Medicare, Medicaid ,Social Security, EPA, DOE, ED and other parts have not. it time to start hacking away at the fat. I mean let be real SS and Medicare are funded by pay roll deduction not income taxes .

BHO as spent more money on failed programs in 2 years than Bush did in 8 and now 2 years into does he own it? hell no he keeps blaming everyone else. Even now what does he do? he going to have Biden run with the Budget talks. He should just step down and let Plugs be President. What he doing well he going to raise 1 Billion dollars.

Wow, talk about ignorant bliss. So tell us, oh omniscient one, how much of the exploding growth in government and the attendant costs since January 2009 is Obama's and the Democrat House and Senate? Or will the responsibility be split between Bush and the next President?

While many of us have rightly criticized Bush for Medicare D and other spending issues, you are consistent in your reluctance to assign any responsibility for our current state of affairs to Obama nor the 4 years of Democrat super-majorities.

I'll ask you as I've asked dozens of others for nigh on 2 1/2 years now - At what point does Obama begin to accept repsonsibility for something?
