Consider this.
Consider a country who has slaughtered unarmed protesters by the hundreds.
Consider a country that is known for brutally torturing dissenters.
Consider a country that is known widely to be a terrorist sympathizer and colluder.
Now consider this.
The United Nations is debating whether this same country ought to be part of their Human Rights Council. Can there be any more evidence for its irrelevance, any more evidence to suggest that it's an organization overdue for disbanding?
Western nations have opened up a new diplomatic campaign against Syria -- trying to stop it getting a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.
"We are fighting a battle, we are engaged in a combat" to stop Syria, said the French government's human rights ambassador of the campaign which has highlighted the growing international tensions with Syria.
Syria, facing global condemnation over the deaths of hundreds of demonstrators opposed to President Bashar al-Assad, has been nominated with India, Indonesia and the Philippines by the Asia group at the United Nations for four seats on the Human Rights Council.
The Geneva-based council was to debate a resolution criticising Syria on Friday but the UN General Assembly in New York will vote whether to give it a seat on the council for 2012-2014 on May 20.
France, the United States, Britain and their allies are looking for an Asian nation to challenge Syria's candidacy or to get other countries to vote against it.
Syria has said its candidacy "signifies its commitment to respect and to support the inalienable and indivisible nature of all human rights."
But France's human rights ambassador, Francois Zimeray, said it was necessary to block Syria "to make sure that the Human Rights Council remains credible."
Sorry Mr. Zimeray... that horse is already out of the barn. In fact, that barn is infested with rodents, lice and every sort of vermin.
Let's just burn the barn down and invest our time and monies elsewhere.

As has been said before....the UN is a joke.
And over time, as western influence wanes, the UN is going to turn on us.
