"I'm sorry, so sorry"

Newt Gingrich is channeling Brenda Lee as he attempts damage control over comments made this past weekend:

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has apologized to congressman Paul Ryan for criticizing his proposal to overhaul Medicare.

Spokesmen for both Gingrich and Ryan tell The Associated Press that the former House speaker called Ryan on Tuesday and offered an apology.

Frankly, the apology is good and necessary but I think it changes little.  The man is damaged goods and is not who Republicans should be looking to as we move toward 2012.

What say you?

I like Newt as an idea guy, persuasive speaker/debater, etc. But way too much personal baggage. And this latest debacle? Yesterday, Bill Bennett [one of the easiest interviewers on radio], in a very polite and civil manner made mincemeat of him. Stick a fork in him.

There was a time not too long ago that Gingrich would have been a good choice. That time has passed. And it's not due to changes in the political landscape. It's all of his own making.

Yet, I still hear some leftward friends tell me that no one should vote for him due to his past personal issues. When I ask them if they would vote for Bill Clinton again, they usually go silent.

Upset Old Guy:

Newt has never demonstrated any Presidential capacity. He's much more a dispassionate thinker than a leader. His personal life demonstrates a lack of control over selfish and impulsive behavior. I won't have voted for the man even if he hadn't stepped on his dick on Meet the Press.

MOst if not all politicians are opportunists, but Newt strikes me as a particularly egregious one, willing to say anything to court the bien pensants of MiniTru and the DC / NYC cocktail set. Perhaps he got burned too badly when he was GinGRINCH back in the '90s and figures that the best way to avoid being demonized is to sound "reasonable" (i.e. liberal)?

No matter. The man does not belong in national politics; he is completely untrustworthy.

I hope he has the sense to go home, soonest.

Newt does have *some* value right now. If the left is focusing on him (and those on the backstabbing right who love sticking real conservatives between the ribs) then another, more viable, candidate may gain some momentum. But I gotta tell ya, I don't trust Romney either. And he's getting way too many accolades.

Faith+1:

This latest gaffe by Newt didn't end his presidential campaign. Only newt and a few disillusioned people ever felt he ever had a snowball's chance to begin with.

Like others stated he has had some good ideas, but he has never been a serious presidential candidate. He's just too divisive and brings so much baggage to give the media to focus on other than the real issues he would be a mistake.

He could have played a role as a commentator and political adviser, but this gaffe probably actually destroyed that role for him.

Gingrich was only at the tops of the media's list and never very strong with the voters. The media love him because he's a loose canon and, as he just proved, he makes good copy. The media want him to run because he is easy to pigeonhole as a wacko, right winger that is out of step with the nation. The media want a GOP candidate that they can easily trash when the primaries are over.

But Newt is out of step with not just the nation as a whole but the party base in particular. His betrayal of Ryan was done to pander to his only natural constituency, the media.

Republicans need to get it through their thick skulls that the media will never support them once the primary is over. They need to understand that the media no longer (assuming that they once did) merely report news but are advocates for a leftist ideology and will report the news in whatever fashion they see will advance their position. The media wants weak GOP candidates that can be defeated or, once in office, that can be controlled by public opinion that the media can manipulate.

An the funniest thing is that this proves Newt Gingrich is a lying sack of shit.

He either lied when he termed Ryan's proposal as radical social engineering or he's lying now when he says he didn't mean what he said.

And he either lied when he said he supports health care insurance mandates or he's lying now when he says he doesn't.

He's just another Republican lying sack of shit. And look at how quickly he's bending over and kissing Limbaugh's ring.

He's toast. He's got to learn that you can't tell the truth and get the GOP nomination -- just ain't gonna happen. The sooner he starts telling the Republican base the lies they want to hear, the better.

It's a major unforced error. If you make this kind of nuke error under no pressure, what are you likely to do as President, when tons of stress are upon you on a daily basis? It's time for Newt to leave the stage and go to academia where he can spout his anti conservative nonsense and receive a paycheck. The longer he stays in the more his crazy aunt in the attic ruminations will distract us from winning in 2012 and provide more ammunition to the leftwing Administration and their lamestream propaganda machine.
