With all the comments about weak and unacceptable candidates, people seem to keep forgetting about the #1 problem for the Republicans in this upcoming election-- Open Primaries.

I think around 17 states have fully open primaries (like my state of Michigan) and another 13 have semi-open primaries (like New Hamphire). With no contest for the Marxist, err I mean Democrat, nomination, that frees up a whole bunch of leftists to vote for whichever Republican they think will do the worst against Obama in all the open primary states. In other words, Obama supporters will have a big say in the selection of his opponent.

Add to that the fact that over 80% of the media supports Obama and will totally Palin any pro-American candidates, there's little hope that a good conservative Republican will win the nomination anyway.

Of course by then things may be so bad that an insane, openly communist terrorist could beat Obama--in which case we'd have four more years of the same policies...

Huntsman has no chance of winning the nomination, and the fact that the resident leftist drones here at Wizbang are here singing his praises is not a plus for him.

Y'see, the great secret here (which you don't think we understand) is that you don't want any Republican to win in 2012, Huntsman or otherwise. You want the weakest Republican you can get to challenge Obama so your God-Emperor can stay in office for another four years. It's the only way Obama can win at this point. Listening to you and WArt on this subject is like taking advice from the opposing coach during a football game. "Yeah, you should totally punt on first down. It's what I would do."

You're assuming a lot of voter enthusiasm on the left, equivalent to what Rush whipped up in 2010. Not seeing it. He can't even get people to show up to see him in person, let alone going to vote for Republicans for giggles. MorOn.org is foundering so badly that they and other liberal activist groups are desperately trying to pool their resources to stay relevant. His advisors have been forced to get the press to let them talk about how exciting it is to still support The Won. Just not seeing that enthusiasm...20% real unemployment will do that do you, especially young people that surely make up a disproportionate percentage of that 20%.

That's where you're wrong. I suppose one of the good things about living in an oligarchy is that the oligarchs don't want some nitwit elected who is going to launch a religious nuclear war, cause a civil war, or generally act so erratically the markets tank. It's bad for business. That's why Obama won - once the bankers saw who Palin was, the money flowed to Obama. Which is also why Obama's not prosecuting banking fraud.

I'm sure that some momentum can be generated for Huntsman in primary states. The only question is whether Romney will cancel Huntsman out and give Pawlenty the nomination, or whether a deal will be made. But Pawlenty? Now there's a loser. And Palin, Bachmann or any of the other nutball candidates would be even more the preferred choice of Obama as an opponent.

Get real, folks: most people in the USA are moderates, not right-wing kooks.

No. Unlike you, I don't deal in paranoid conspiracy theories about bankers and mysterious "oligarchs." Here are the facts, drone: Huntsman has no base of support among Republicans. There's no groundswell of support for him, and the reaction thus far to his announcement has been "meh." Well, that and "who?" His dishwater-dull announcement speech didn't help. His mealy-mouthed call for civility is not what the right wants... we want someone with fire in his belly, someone who will show genuine outrage at Obama and the Democrats over their multi-trillion-dollar yearly deficits, bloated entitlements, and leftist pandering. Huntsman is nothing, and he'll be gone shortly. If you donated to him (and make no mistake, you did no such thing), then you're a fool, and I'd like to take this occasion to mock you.

Open primaries are not that big of an issue. Sure you get crossover but it works both ways. Plus, in order to cross over you must therefore forgo any opportunity to vote in state or local elections of you regular party. Since dems are mainly in urban centers that means that they will lose out on picking any significant candidate for their state and local elections.

As for Huntsman, yawn, wake me when he becomes significant. the only reason the is news at all is because the media wants to pump him up.

The media focuses on republicans for three reasons:

1) They are afraid of them and they might energize the conservative base so the media tries to destroy them (Palin, Perry, Christie, Bachman)

2) they know that they will not energize the base so the media wants to promote them as the candidate that will make you look good for voting for. (Huntsman, Romney, Huckabee)

3) they know they will say something stupid to offend/alienate somebody/everybody (Gingrich, Paul).

Plus if he doesn't severely change almost all his policies the ecomony will continue to tumble into the Greater Depression(C) and he looses the independents.

And I am thinking positive at least to the extent that I think it's not going to be hard to beat him. W.Art, it's a tired meme that every conservative is by necessity stupid. In reality all it shows is that you are bigoted against people who think differently from you. People you disagree with cannot be intelligent but misguided, they have to be stupid. It's the only way you can justify your own beliefs to yourself because you take so much of them on faith and are incapable of actually thinking them through yourself.

We can play the same game with obama:
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2011/06/its-time-to-play-whos-the-dummy-palin-vs-obama/

and that doesn't even bring up the 57 states blunder.

Or how about the reel we could make with Pelosi, "We have to pass the bill so you can read it"? Or dem congressmen fretting that Guam might capsize?

The only thing you do when you reflexively call conservatives stupid is verify to the rest of the world that you are in fact stupid yourself.

Poor Art.You keep ... (Below threshold)
JLawson:

Poor Art.

You keep popping up all these things that supposedly show Bachman as crazy. She thinks Glenn Beck could get us out of this budget crisis? Hell, I think the 14-year old treasurer of a Boy Scout troop could manage that - because he wouldn't be adverse to going "Look, we can't spend more money than we have", and given the reins of a much smaller budget knows how to stay within it. This is something that, for all their credentials, Obama and his advisors seem never to have done.

She believes in Intelligent Design? Who the hell cares? I believe in evolution - what does that have to do with running the country? Are you worried she'll impose some sort of fundamentalist theocracy or some silly crap like that? I thought that meme was dumped after Bush left office - have you been hiding it in a closet or something?

It's simple, Art. Obama's clueless. He doesn't know WTF to do to solve our financial problems, he doesn't know shit about diplomacy, his advisors are about as cognizant of the real world outside academia as your average 2x4. His world is AF-1 and the golf course, congratulatory parties and fundraisers (where he's drawing a bit less than he was, oddly enough.)

That proverbial syphilitic camel's starting to look pretty damn good in comparison. The Anyone But Obama's vote is going to be pretty strong this cycle. I'd even vote for Huntsman, RINO or not.

But I think right now, there's about a 30% chance Obama's not even going to run. It all depends on which is stronger - his sense of political self-preservation (Retire as First black Prez, hooray!) is stronger than his ego (First two-term black Prez who crashed the US economy through his idiotic political decisions, boo!) That's if he could win a second term, which is far from guaranteed. He can retire a hero, or as an incompetent chump. It'll be his call.

obama has made more gaffes in two years than Bush did in eight. He has alienated our allies and bankrupted our nation. In less than a year and a half China has divested itself of all it's short term US debt and is rapidly divesting of its long term debt.

obama makes Dan Quaile look like Albert Einstein when you combine the stupid statements with the policy errors.

I notice that the lefties never defend the 57 states comment or the gifting of the UK Prime Minister a DVD set that he could not watch because the format was wrong (never mind that it was a bogus set of cheap movies you could pick up at Walgreens or that he is visually impaired). You never defend his giving the Queen an IPod with his speeches or the return of the bust of Churchill. You never defend his writing Chirac thinking that he was still President of France, while snubbing the actual President of France. You never defend his telling Poland that he was bailing on the anti missile defense on the anniversary of their invasion by the Soviet Union.

No, because obama is a genius. Or so you claim without any actual evidence to demonstrate it other than the claims of the left and the fawning of the MSM.

The Republicans are CHOMPING at the bit to run against Obama. The way this guy is running the country, come election day the majority of the country will crawl over broken glass to pull the lever for another candidate.

Wow are the liberals batshi... (Below threshold)
WildWillie:

Wow are the liberals batshit or what?

Art, you still have not proven how Palin's released emails would ruin her and our hero. Where is your facts on that? You stated many times before the release that the email would RUIN her. Come on. Be a man.

Oh Yea! Here is some batshit quotes:

I will close Gitmo in my first year.
I will have immigration reform first up on my agenda.
This is the first time I was ever proud of my country.
We need the stimulus to keep unemployment from going over 8%.
All the jobs will be shovel ready.

I can keep going but my fingers will cramp from all the batshit lies Obama has on his empty record but yet you still support him. Now that! My friend, is batshit crazy. ww

On Obama's team and endorse... (Below threshold)
LeBron Steinman:

On Obama's team and endorsed by Harry Reid and Art Woop.
A new standard for solid conservative credentials.
