What A Surprise!

Not to say I told you so, but I TOLD YOU SO!!!

From Asymmetrical Information, this update on the Republican "hackers":

A statement put out last week by Mr. Hatch's office says that the accused staffer "improperly accessed at least some of the documents referenced in the media reports." That accusation bears scrutiny in light of how the committee's computer system is organized: Until Nov. 16, all Judiciary staffers used the same computer server and had access to a shared drive, a system put in place when Sen. Leahy took over as chairman in 2001 and hired his own IT staff.

The Leahy techies neglected to put up a firewall between the GOP and Democratic staff, making it possible for all staffers to read everything posted on the shared drive. No one hacked into anyone's private files. These are, in effect, Leahy leaks.

In my post on the subject I took bloggers to task for pronouncing this as "hacking" before any facts were revealed. I await their corrections...

Another point to think about: Traditionaly when a person uncovers a piece of disturbing information and reports it to the public, this person is thought of as a "whistle blower" and is usualy praised to some extent. To whit, think of the people who blew the whistle on Enron. Why is this any different when the whistle blower is a Republican. I applaud the fact that this kind of drudgery was uncovered and exposed, though I may disagree with the specific tactic. Cheers!

As an IT guy, this is one of the no brainers. Get the feeling that Leahy's guys did this intentionally, and then during the change over it got overlooked, and then an enterprising republican crossed the line.

I nailed it in your comment... (Below threshold)

I nailed it in your comments.

Goodballs like Calpuntitz had a field day with it but as usual, he had no clue what he was talking about.
