Presented Without Comment

From Darlene Superville, Associated Press Writer:

In West Virginia, Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, gave [John] Kerry a rifle as a gift. Kerry, a self-described gun-owner and hunter, quipped: "I thank you for the gift, but I can't take it to the debate with me."

Unlike Mr. Kerry, both Mr. Bush and Mr. Miller are quite familiar with the above firearm, and not afraid to use it. They don't see the rifle as a campaign prop, but an actual tool that has no taint of evil associated with it.

i seem to recall a fit being thrown by the media and certain members of the left when Bush made a joke about how much easier it would be to govern if he was a dictator.
Kerry jokes about shooting the president and there's no problem as far as the media or left are concerned.
good grief.
damn hypocrites.

Oh come on folks, in all fairness. Wouldn't Kerry mean that he *can't* take it to the debates because he'd rather *not* shoot the president, as opposed to regretting over how he can't take it to the debates so that he can?

What does he really mean? We can ask him today, ask him two weeks from now, and another two weeks after that. But I'm sure he'll mean everything to everyone by the time the debates start.

And with him without the gun either.

Kerry's a tool. The rifle turns out to be the only object of caliber in that story.

Compare and contrast the above statement with the following: "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck
of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator."

"I thank you for the gift, but I can't take it (a shotgun) to the debate with me."

First thing that springs to mind: the first two express hostility towards an abstract entity (a hostile nation, an unwieldy process), while the third expresses hostility against a specific individual (President Bush).

My hunch is that Kerry will re-state it was a joke (after the press first stated it for him), but I suspect it had a hint of truth. In other words, he actually meant it, before he didn't mean it.

I may be conservative but you guys need to be a little more honest with your criticism. Posting part of a quote is manipulative and doesn't present the entire story. What Kerry actually said was "I thank you for the gift, but I can't take it to the debate with me. Therasa doesn't let me handle sharp objects, let alone guns."

Am I the only one thinking this quote would go well with a commercial highlighting Kerry's lying about being at the meeting where shooting US Senators was discussed? People have said "So what, they didn't carry out the idea and anyways Kerry argued against it. But arguing or voting against killing people isn't enough. Younger people don't seem to grasp this period of U.S. history. The KC meeting followed a decade which saw several prominent figures (MLK, RFK, JFK, X) killed. Based on that Kerry had an obligation to report that the shootings were discussed.

It's a freeking joke. Can we please leave the humorless, ultra-sensitive masses on the lib side of the fence? Kerry actually using self depricating humor is a significant change already, the Clinton crowd is already making changes that are fundamentally different from the Kerry status quo. Anyway I hope conservatives aren't getting hyper-sensitive about what is obviously a joke, even if it wasn't that funny.

I'm hoping that I just haven't read you long enough to "get" your response. But, just in case you've so much to read (as I'm sure you do) you missed something, my reply wasn't in any way meant as a comment on you, or your work. It was pure sarcasm and a manufactured quote.

Cop-Killer Endorses Kerry
Cop-killer Endorses KerryConvicted cop-killer, Mumia Abu-Jamal, endorses John Kerry. Abu-Jamal's death sentence for gunning down Philadelphia Police Officer Danny Faulkner in 1981 has made him an idol to many extreme leftists. The convicted murderer regularly contributes columns to Workers World, the weekly journal of a Marxist revolutionary party that is the main sponsor of International ANSWER, which in turn is a major sponsor of anti-war protests.

"One of Kerry's selling points is his plan to appeal to Europe to give a hand to the American colonial project in Iraq, instead of the cold shoulder which the Bush regime has received since the invasion and occupation of Iraq. ..."

New York Sergeants Benevolent Association Endorses President Bush for Re-election"Less than a year after he was sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States, the momentous events of September 11th, 2001 transformed the global landscape forever. From Day one, President Bush showed true leadership and poise as he vowed to pursue justice, regardless of where that pursuit took us. He made clear that it would be a long and difficult process, and that the war on terrorism would be fought like no war had ever been fought before. Never once has he wavered in his commitment to eradicate the terrorist threat in this country, and abroad.

President Bush has also proven himself to be a steadfast supporter of the United States law enforcement community, and his administration has made itself available to the SBA on numerous occasions for a variety of concerns. All in all he has proven himself to be a strong and determined leader during one of the most precipitous times in this nation."

Black Lan - It's not a small detail, it's a major detail indicative of the media and how stories involving firearms are reported. I doubt Ms. Superville knows the difference between a shotgun and a rifle, let alone is and is not an "assault weapon". Words mean things. If the media does a sloppy job with the details... What the heck am I saying... IF? When the media does a sloppy job with the details, folks who may not know better get their opinions and worldviews adjusted sloppily.
