CBS Names Independent Panel

CBS Press Release - The Hon. Dick Thornburgh and Louis D. Boccardi to Comprise Independent Review Panel Examining CBS News '60 Minutes' Wednesday Report.

Professor Bainbridge immediately notices a BIG potential problem with Thornburgh's appointment.

Update: Looks like the Milton Hershey School Alumni Association wasn't too impressed with Dick Thornburgh and the services of his law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart. The emphasis added is mine.

From - "Bias, Flaw, & Avoidance" [PDF]

Prior to entering into the Relationship Agreement, MHSAA presented the Board with a draft of a petition which MHSAA was contemplating submitting to the Orphans' Court. MHSAA's draft petition treated in general terms many of the issues with which MHSAA is concerned, and the Board expressed its desire to avoid legal proceedings related to these concerns. It was in this context that the Board retained Dick Thornburgh and Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP ("K&L") to provide an examination of the concerns raised by MHSAA. Although many of our members viewed this arrangement with K&L skeptically, we nonetheless agreed to cooperate fully with the investigation, devoting thousands of hours of our time, and providing massive amounts of documentary and other evidence in the process. Virtually alone among all involved in the investigation, MHSAA did all of this at its own expense. We did this because we believed that a fair review of the matter would demonstrate the clear intent of Milton Hershey in his Deed. We thus enthusiastically -- and in hindsight, naively -- lent our full support to the endeavor, instructing all of our members to cooperate as well. Relying on the assurances of the Managers that the investigation would be fair, we thus presented K&L with all manner of evidence and childcare expertise to demonstrate the validity of our concerns about the changes to, and unauthorized reconstruction of, the Deed. During this time frame, MHSAA sought to keep the results of its research private, and shied away from airing our differences with the Managers in the press. In the meantime, the Board continued to methodically pursue the very changes that MHSAA was seeking to have reviewed during the course of the K&L investigation, as though to make those changes irreversible.

Unfortunately, and as will be demonstrated below, the final report of K&L is a complete whitewash. It ignores facts and law which do not comport with its desired result, and goes so far as to gratuitously insult and demean members of MHSAA for having had the temerity to want to have Milton Hershey's wishes for disadvantaged children fulfilled in the manner stated in the Deed.

The fact finding is off to a great start...

Lou Boccardi and Dan Rather... (Below threshold)

Lou Boccardi and Dan Rather aren't exactly unknown to each other, either. I can't say that they're close friends, but they are certainly social acquaintances that constantly travel in the same small NYC media elite party circuit.

It's not much different than if CBS had appointed Peter Jennings to investigate the memos. There is a major conflict of interest between Boccardi's supposed interest in finding the truth, and his unquestionable interest in not making the MSM look bad or ruffling the feathers of the people he hangs out with every day of his life.

- First a wardrobe malfunction then a typewriter malfunction... what next ... CBS should have stuck with Bubba the love sponge... at least he was obvious....

- Anyway none of it matters with the demise of our beloved twinkies.....

So, you don't like the team. Let your readers nominate a suitably unbiased pair.

The floor is open.

A suitably unbiased pair? Fine. I nominate any two people who are good at investigative work (private investigators, retired detectives, forensic accountants, anyone with an ability to get to the bottom of things), and who are:

a) Not members of the MSM.

b) Not professional political types.

And there is absolutely no reason why they need to be famous.

Ahh, but, SPG, there IS a reason, there IS...it's called RATINGS. Because, never forget that CBS has to have viewers for their Panel Process, or, they have nothing. This is SO theatrical: journalism about the theatre of journalism, re-enacted by actors on the stage of television.

SPG -- you're right. They should bring in real investigators and guys who know how to conduct interviews, not political hacks like on the 9-11 Commission. I have over 25 years of law enforcement and security experience. Sh*t, I'll bring in a team and really get to the bottom of Rathergate.

I'd feel better if bubba the love sponge was on the panel. I was listening to hannity and he said that rather spoke at some dinner honoring thornburgh.

But screw this panel bullshit. Keep up the pressure for CBS to shitcan Rather, Mapes, and Heyward. Does anyone doubt what the outcome of this panel will be? Rather and Mapes aired obvious forged documents to try and influence a federal election. Heyward obviously has no control so he should be held accountable as well.

Feet to the fire.

I'm with Kouri. I know at least a dozen retired NYPD guys who could walk in and clear the crap piled high in CBS's outhouse in no time flat. And if anyone stuck a camera in their way and said "Would you care to comment?" the only repsonse would be "I'm working here, so get the F*#k out of my face."

A former politician and a former Big Media boy do not a trusted investigation team make. And it's funny that Thornburgh's inclusion is supposed to show that it will be a non-partisan investigation ... so I take that to mean they're admitting the AP guy is on their side?

I nominate Reverend Falwell... (Below threshold)

I nominate Reverend Falwell and Reverend Jackson ... and a referee to be named later!
