Hillary Clinton Will Vote Against Roberts

Even though Senator Hillary Clinton has gone to great lengths to portray herself as a moderate Democrat, there are certain litmus tests one must pass to remain a front-runner for the party's nomination in 2008. Voting against John Roberts appears to be on of those items. To wit, consider some of the gymnastics Clinton goes through to justify her vote against Roberts in this press release.

"The nomination of Judge John Roberts to be Chief Justice of the United States is a matter of tremendous consequence for future generations of Americans. It requires thoughtful inquiry and debate, and I commend my colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee for their dedication to making sure that all questions were presented and that those outside of the Senate had the opportunity to make their voices heard. After serious and careful consideration of the Committee proceedings and Judge Roberts's writings, I believe I must vote against his confirmation. I do not believe that the Judge has presented his views with enough clarity and specificity for me to in good conscience cast a vote on his behalf.
What follows is a long recitation of conjecture based on old memos and rhetoric first seen from left-wing think tanks.

Reading between the lines, she admits in her closing paragraph that she's really voting to pander to the base.

Since I expect Judge Roberts to be confirmed, I hope that my concerns are unfounded and that he will be the kind of judge he said he would be during his confirmation hearing. If so, I will be the first to acknowledge it. However, because I think he is far more likely to vote the views he expressed in his legal writings, I cannot give my consent to his confirmation and will, therefore, vote against his confirmation. My desire to maintain the already fragile Supreme Court majority for civil rights, voting rights and women's rights outweigh the respect I have for Judge Roberts's intellect, character, and legal skills."
Maybe her stock will rise in the Daily Kos's monthly Democratic straw poll... or not.

We already have two wicked witches of the "west" in Pelosi and Boxer. Please keep Bills wife in the east. How this woman ever rose to any empression that she could be "presidential" still confounds me.

That would make it hard for her to claim she's a uniter, not a divider when she starts her official run for the White House, but only if her supporters were the type who cared about honesty in the least. I think they've already proven otherwise.

Rovin, was the use of "empression" rather than "impression" a typo or a Freudian slip?

Hillary, Pelosi, Feinstein,... (Below threshold)

Hillary, Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer...these truly are inidividuals with a nearly outdated frame of references, as if they're still musing about John Lennon's "Imagine" or "Bed In" or thereabouts.

It's as if they are stuck in anti-morality as the morality of choice. Withholding support for Roberts because he has personal ethics is -- dare I write this here -- probably too formidable an idea for Hillary to "support" as with the others, also.

That's the point, there is no real frame of reference for those people. It is redefined by the daily political climate in looney land. They are making the mistake that of thinking that their base is really made up of these wackjobs because they either watch too much television news or believe what they hear from their echo chambers.

Hillary is trying to please too many people, ethics have no room there.

It will catch up with her.

I really don't care who the Dem's run, but none of the far lefties are going to make it past Iowa. Hillary knows this, but in trying to please all of the people all of the time, she is going to piss off many of the people that vote in primaries, conventions or straw polls.

Something's amiss with your Hillary link, Kevin. This one's working, tho: http://clinton.senate.gov/news/statements/details.cfm?id=246324&&.

...btw I've been trying to parse the Clinton strategy here, and what I've come up with is that this is a chance to ride the anti-Feingold backlash and court the Kosbase -- all while blunting Joe Biden's heretofore noteworthy "No" vote. Now no one cares how either of her potential 08 rivals voted, and she's in the clear with the Air America voter.

That's all I've got, right wingers. I'm going to bed. Oh, and Hillary's going to rule over you all soon. Deal with it. :)

The left will care; the right will care. The 60 or 70% of America in between will never notice. This isn't big enough of an issue to stick to a candidate in most Americans' minds after three years--which, of course, is why she's doing it.

She's voting against Roberts, and she's meeting Cindy Sheehan. She's joining Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson-Lee, and the pride and joy of Georgia, Cynthia "Uncrowned Queen of Riyadh" McKinney. I think she's getting desperate; she wants to appear a centrist while pleasing the psychomoonbat contingent, and she's finding it impossible. She's going have to move to the left to keep her base, and she never had a base in in the right. And she will NEVER be president.

Unabrewer: True, but if Hillary manages to win the Presidential election in 2008, she will have to get her District and Supreme Court nominees approved in a likely Repuublican controlled Senate, and she has handed said Senators all the ammo they will need to stop her.

It has almost come to the point that you can tell which way the vote is going to go. Thankfully, there are more than enough Senators who could put the party lines aside for the sake of doing the right thing.
