CIA Leak Case - No News Is Still News

A Wall Street Journal article today rehashes the existing lack of information about the investigation into Valerie Plame leak case. Two new bits of information are presented:

There are signs that prosecutors now are looking into contacts between administration officials and journalists that took place much earlier than previously thought. Earlier conversations are potentially significant, because that suggests the special prosecutor leading the investigation is exploring whether there was an effort within the administration at an early stage to develop and disseminate confidential information to the press that could undercut former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife, Central Intelligence Agency official Valerie Plame.

...Lawyers familiar with the investigation believe that at least part of the outcome likely hangs on the inner workings of what has been dubbed the White House Iraq Group. Formed in August 2002, the group, which included Messrs. Rove and Libby, worked on setting strategy for selling the war in Iraq to the public in the months leading up to the March 2003 invasion. The group likely would have played a significant role in responding to Mr. Wilson's claims.

They don't say exactly where these "signs" are coming from, which undercuts the credibility of the information. The could just as easily have said, "lawyers familiar with the case expect that no indictments will be issued," which given the void of actual facts, would be about as reliable.

Until Patrick Fitzgerald files indictments or closes his case everything in the media is just idle speculation.

They really do credit Karl Rove with having magical powers. Now they are looking into events that took place before Wilson went to Africa. How could they have known then that Wilson was going or that he'd come back and file a fictional account of what he didn't learn? I bet Karl has a job waiting for him at the Psychic Friends Network if he has to step down at the White House.

I appreciate the irony that the news organizations are desperate for leaks about the proceedings of a grand jury investigation into leaks.

Saying they are looking to see if Plame's identity was common knowledge prior to the 'leak'.

Yes, the rampant Plamegate ... (Below threshold)

Yes, the rampant Plamegate speculation by the MSM is amazing. Wizbangers (in July 05 threads, etc.) and others like TM of JustOneMinute and his readers already did such thorough research and analysis of MSM/Wilson/Plame involvement, including the French Connection, that the current MSM articles are laughable in comparison. It's like watching a movie where the audience sees the bridge breaking up below a train, while its occupants are oblivious to the coming catastrophe. The MSM senses something big is coming, though, so they desperately grab every morsel they can get from lawyers representing MSM reporters who have testified and then try to bake soufflés out of crumbs.

Btw, bullwinkle, re the timeline - Wilson went to Niger for the CIA in Feb 2002 (and in 1999, also with Plame's involvement). The Fitzgerald GJ is reportedly questioning Miller on her June 03 notes recently "discovered" - one report said the notes were found in the Washington DC bureau, and another report said in the NY offices of the NY Times. (So, her notes are one year after his trip.) But you're right on time warping in general - it's a common thread running through CBSgate and Plamegate, even Kerry-in-Cambodia-gate. Time warps, synonymous with lies, were the tools used by the MSM/CIA/DNC to attack Bush, interfere with election, democracy, US foreign policy, and national security… and will be their undoing.

From my observations, Fitzgerald has long ago gotten down to the nitty gritty of the whole cabal. I read (damn, forgot to bookmark it) that the FBI's investigation of the forged Niger memos has been absorbed into Fitzgerald's leak investigation. He's probably just tying up a few loose ends now.

PS to Bullwinkle - Sorry, I left out the Aug 02 WHIG matter which you were probably referring to in the time warp. (That was 6 months after Wilson's Feb 02 trip.)

"UN Oil For Food Scandal: Finally, The French Connection Is Acknowledged (by French and English Media)".

"...Two former French ambassadors have admitted earning hundreds of thousands of dollars from the sale of oil that Iraq had assigned to them under the United Nations Oil-for-Food programme."

"The disclosure tarnished France’s moral stand against the invasion of Iraq, and its Foreign Ministry scrambled to distance itself from the alleged illicit activities of Serge Boidevaix, a former director of the ministry, and of Jean-Bernard Mérimée, a former French Ambassador to the UN. Both are facing corruption charges."

Hmmm, wonder if Google will be my friend if I search the names of those two French ambassadors with Wilson Rock Creek Corp. Niger Cogema Cotechna Mark Rich, maybe even Libby.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a link and a picture is priceless: Plame & Wilson with Clinton - Feb 1999, found by MacRanger. This is after Wilson had retired from the State Dept and the NSC in mid 1998. Fancy still being invited to the WH then!

Wonder if that was before or after Wilson's 1999 business trip to Niger; before or after the Iraqi diplomat's 1999 visit to Niger.

[Short excerpt of SSCI Report on Wilson's 1999 trip, here, at No. 5 in the list.]
