Dr. Wafa Sultan: Fearless Truthteller gets Death Threats

I blogged last week about Dr. Wafa Sultan's bravery for going on al Jazeera television and saying the following:

"We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church ... Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them."

Well, her brutal honesty about the current state of radical Islam has gotten her death threats from radical Islamists. What a shock:

LOS ANGELES, March 10 -- Three weeks ago, Dr. Wafa Sultan was a largely unknown Syrian-American psychiatrist living outside Los Angeles, nursing a deep anger and despair about her fellow Muslims.

Today, thanks to an unusually blunt and provocative interview on Al Jazeera television on Feb. 21, she is an international sensation, hailed as a fresh voice of reason by some, and by others as a heretic and infidel who deserves to die.

In the interview, which has been viewed on the Internet more than a million times and has reached the e-mail of hundreds of thousands around the world, Dr. Sultan bitterly criticized the Muslim clerics, holy warriors and political leaders who she believes have distorted the teachings of Muhammad and the Koran for 14 centuries.

She said the world's Muslims, whom she compares unfavorably with the Jews, have descended into a vortex of self-pity and violence.

Dr. Sultan said the world was not witnessing a clash of religions or cultures, but a battle between modernity and barbarism, a battle that the forces of violent, reactionary Islam are destined to lose.

In response, clerics throughout the Muslim world have condemned her, and her telephone answering machine has filled with dark threats. But Islamic reformers have praised her for saying out loud, in Arabic and on the most widely seen television network in the Arab world, what few Muslims dare to say even in private.

The video from this debate was viewed on MEMRI.org over a million times. Dr. Sultan has definitely struck a huge nerve. She must be supported and commended for her courage and conviction.

Update: It is being reported today that Dr. Wafa Sultan and her family have gone into hiding:

Dr. Wafa Sultan is in hiding, fearful for her life and the safety of her family, after she lambasted the roots of radical Islam during a debate televised on Al-Jazeera last month.

Dr. Sultan is leading a struggle to create a new reality in the Islamic world, which she believes should be led by none other than the women it has oppressed for so long. Born in Syria and now a Los Angeles-based psychiatrist, Dr. Sultan has taken upon herself the mission of trying to change the way the Islamic world operates.

The radical Islamists who threaten Dr. Sultan's life are proving her point.

mr ho:

The loud little handful will shout for war. The pulpit will warily and cautiously protest at first.... The great mass of the nation will rub its sleepy eyes, and will try to make out why there should be a war, and they will say earnestly and indignantly: "It is unjust and dishonorable and there is no need for war."
Then the few will shout even louder.... Before long you will see a curious thing: anti-war speakers will be stoned from the platform, and free speech will be strangled by hordes of furious men who still agree with the speakers but dare not admit it...
Next, the statesmen will invent cheap lies...and each man will be glad of these lies and will study them because they soothe his conscience; and thus he will bye and bye convince himself that the war is just and he will thank God for a better sleep he enjoys by his self-deception."

All right, I'll comment on ... (Below threshold)
mr ho:

All right, I'll comment on that. This is rather deep, but you all have a very high degree of intelligence, so I'm going to make an attempt. In the time of Bible history, there was a geographic area known as Judea. Judea was a province of the Roman Empire. Now, a person who lived in Judea was known as a Judean, and in Latin it was Judaeus; in Greek it was Judaius. Those are the two words, in Greek and Latin, for a Judean.

Now, in Latin and Greek there is no such letter as 'j', and the first syllable of Judaeus and Judaius starts 'ghu'. Now, when the Bible was written, it was first written in Greek, Latin, Panantic, Syriac, Aramaic... all those languages. Never Was the word Jew in any of them because the word didn't exist. Judea was the country, and the people were Judeans, and Jesus was referred to only as a Judean. I've seen those early... the earliest scripts available.

In 1345, a man by the name of Wycliffe in England thought that it was time to translate the Bible into English. There was no English edition of the Bible because who the Devil could read? It was only the educated church people who could read Latin and Greek, Syriac, Aramaic and the other languages. Anyhow, Wycliffe translated the Bible into English. But in it, he had to look around for some words for Judaeas and Judaius.

There was no English word because Judea had passed out of existence. There was no Judea. People had long ago forgotten that. So in the first translation he used the word, in referring to Jesus, as 'gyu', "jew". At the time, there was no printing press.

Then, between 1345 and the 17th century, when the press came into use, that word passed through so many changes... I have them all here. If you want I can read them to you. I will. That word 'gyu' which was in the Wycliffe Bible became. . . first it was ' gyu ', then ' giu ', then ' iu ' (because the ' i ' in Latin is pronounced like the ' j '. Julius Caesar is ' Iul ' because there is no 'j' in Latin) then ' iuw ', then ' ieuu ', then ' ieuy ', then ' iwe ', then ' iow ', then ' iewe ', all in Bibles as time went on. Then ' ieue ', then ' iue ', then ' ive ', and then ' ivw ', and finally in the 18th century... ' jew '. Jew.

All the corrupt and contracted forms for Judaius, and Judaeas in Latin. Now, there was no such thing as 'Jew', and any theologian -- I've lectured in maybe 20 of the most prominent theological seminaries in this country, and two in Europe -- there was no such word as Jew. There only was Judea, and Jesus was a Judean and the first English use of a word in an English bible to describe him was 'gyu' -- Jew. A contracted and shortened form of Judaeus, just the same as we call a laboratory a 'lab', and gasoline 'gas'... a tendency to short up.

So, in England there were no public schools; people didn't know how to read; it looked like a scrambled alphabet so they made a short word out of it. Now for a theologian to say that you can't harm the Jews, is just ridiculous. I'd like to know where in the scriptures it says that. I'd like to know the text. --Benjamin Freedman

Khazar. Please learn your History. These People were Turkish Mongoloid. Trying to destroy a race to install a religion is crazy. Think about it.
Its like your helping a band of Liars kill a race of people for a Religious reason that doesn't exist.

Would you kill The Catholic Mexicans to install Christianity? Would you Help The Canucks Kill the Israelis so they would become Monks?

Odd that you wouldn't do that above but you are helping a group, Just a NAME, Kill another Religion or Group, for just another NAME.

Please Explain to me these Khazars?
Please, do the WORLD a favor and STUDY Something beside rehashing TRASH Thank You

Man, mr ho gets the good drugs... he teeters right on the edge of coherency and relevance, and if I squint real hard and cock my head a little, I can nearly make out what he's saying and what relationship it has to the posting.

But I just can't make that final connection between his comments and rationality.

It might help if he occasionally cited a source, or stuck with a consistent name or style or level of literacy (he bounces back and forth between pidgin English and High Dudgeon Gibberish), but then again that might ruin the charm and appeal of his "if I say a lot and use big words and keep talking, maybe nobody will notice I'm talking so purely out of my ass, I have to eat six helpings of refried beans to finish one comment" style.

For example, he fails to mention the centuries of Jewish history that predate the Roman Empire, or discussing the derivation of the terms that predate "Jew," such as "Hebrew" or "Israelite." I'd say it was darned inconvenient to his thesis, but I'll be damned if I can tell what exactly the point of his babblings was.

Mr.Ho, Wasn't the Roman province named after the re-constituted one-time Kingdom of Judah, it being the southern half of the original Kingdom of Israel? And wasn't that southern kingdom named for the largest of the three tribes inhabiting it (still), namely Judah? And didn't these inhabitants, many Hellenized by now, though of three tribes: Judah, Benjamin and Levi, answer to the name "Jew/ Judah" or some variant? (In their Greek and Aramaic forms, of course; with the "y" sound, "j" not being yet invented, I know!) As for the Khazars, some of the so-called "lost tribes"may have gotten more lost than others on their way to northern Europe, or inter-married and left the in-laws behind:) The Pathan(sp?) who today occupy what would have been a likely escape route out of Assyria are mainly muslim but I've READ they bow toward Jerusalem instead of Mecca. The Khazars are just further up the same road. The main highway though was over the Caucasus Mountains though the elites seemed to have made their way north by sea: Scotland was settled and named after a daughter of Hezekiah who brought with her Jacob's Pillar, a.k.a. the Stone of Scone. This was much earlier than the main body of Israelites who were enslaved (we assume)and eventually came to be known as Saxons from "Isaac's Son" who was of course Israel. Denmark being settled by the tribe of Dan (Danmark) is only the most obvious example though the "higher critics" have since tried to muddy these waters with invented etymologies.

Dr. Wafa Sultan's bravery or racism?

We all know deep inside our hearts that what Dr. Wafa said was wrong.
Calling Muslims barbarian's on Al Jazzera is a very disgusting thing to do. Dr. Wafa very well knew that millions of Muslim were watching her when she made such evil statements.
It was meant to hurt each and every Muslim. As I have always said is all part of a larger Western conspiracy aimed at destroying and wiping out Islam. We will never allow this to happen and will fight back to protect Islam from evil racists and western powers.

Jay Tea:

Oddly enough, I agree with Muslim Unity. A true Muslim would never have done anything like out-debating their opponent, crushing their arguments with facts.

A real Muslim, as he understands the term, would have simply beheaded their opponent, preferably while they are bound hand and foot, while shouting "Allahu Ackbar!"

But I forget. We're discussing a woman here. A real Muslim woman would not dare show her face in public, disagree with a MAN, or even say that she is a former Muslim -- all of which apply here.

Funny how rarely the death penalty for apostasy is brought up, MU -- it's almost like you don't WANT the rest of the world to know that the penalty for leaving Islam and renouncing your faith is DEATH.

Hurtful statements?<p... (Below threshold)

Hurtful statements?

Sometimes the truth hurts.

Maybe that's a Western value... seeing strength in facing truth that hurts. But other people see that as a weakness in us... that we allow hurtful statements, we allow "piss Christ", we allow Fred Phelps to spew his hatred and we protect neo-Nazi marches and peace marches and "hey look how stupid I am" marches. Bush doesn't stop Al Gore from embarassing us overseas, doesn't control our media even though they make it harder for us in the GWoT, doesn't silence his enemies.

But all those things we do, what we allow to exist though it's offensive or hurtful, is so that we aren't tempted to supress the truth when it is spoken.

There's more strength in that, more faith in the ultimate superiority of our system of freedom and government, than there is in trying to shut up some apostate woman.

Only a weak man would need to do that. Weak and pitiful for the world to see.

Oh, and I should say.

As a plan to wipe out Islam it's going to work.

A dynamic system *always* wins. A system that supresses speech and opinion will always lose. When stasis is the goal, stasis will be achieved.

In answer to "Dr. Wafa Sult... (Below threshold)

In answer to "Dr. Wafa Sultan's bravery or racism?"

She was not discussing race, she was discussing religion and not all Muslims but particular types of Muslims... I don't have anything against religious people as long as they are not harming others with their religion or preaching like blind, babbling fools (unfortunately this is often the case).

Lets take the whole Muhammad bomb head issue for example, I've seen that caricature and i thought it was pretty fucking stupid, however it SHOULD have been published and if anyone feels it is incorrect PROVE why it is wrong and EXPLAIN WHY. Anyone should be able to say anything even if it is blatantly wrong or racist
And if it is then at least it is out in the open to be changed.

Instead of doing this, you have this fundamentalist freak show showing up all the other Muslims, burning flags of entire countries and killing people, scapegoating like morons. The media is now homing in on this, therefore encouraging islamophobia and creating distractions/divisions (the good old fascist divide and rule tactic) and those monkeys in the street are in fact reinforcing and proving right the kind of things those cartoons were trying to imply (I am referring to the extremists in case you are too stupid to realise that).

Over here in the UK+ we have a fascist Nazi party called the BNP who want to send all the none whites "back home" even though most of them are "home". However people don't seem to realise they share the same kind of oppressive/fascist beliefs of these fundamentalists but are just more intelligent.

This is not my opinion of course, It's just the way it is and clearly what is happening.

Morons take Islam and Interpret it into something even worse than it is. It is clear to me that most social crap from stupid mindless human traditions stems from religion which has been used to rule over and steer the masses throughout history, if we do not question things we remain monkeys and Cease to evolve. If anyone can tell me why not and back their comments up with evidence i will take that back, but they can't because there is none.

A bedtime story for Bin Ladin

One day a man decided to marry a Moslem woman. He found out that he needed to convert himself into Islam before he could marry her. So he went to find out what that entailed. When he found out, he had lots of questions. He felt that Islam and its prophets had no right to make such claims. He wanted to tell the prophet himself that the Koran was just a Fairy tale passed on from generation to generation.

He really loved the woman so he pretended to embrace Islam. Then he married the woman at her Islamic church. After a while he taught her all about the Christian religion. The woman began to see that the Koran was just a story. She soon found comfort in Christ.

They found that they had to keep their beliefs to themselves. They moved to a part of the world that accepted them as Christians and were remarried in The Name of Christ. They soon had several children and raised them as Christians.

Even if Wafa never says another word, the words that have been spoken already, will echo with truth for as long as time eternal.

Such truth inspires the opressed to have hope. This can not be undone. Very historic.
