Vietnam, Watergate and Rove

Michael Barone writes about how current events are just not easy for Democrats to process, especially because they keep trying to fit them into the mold of Vietnam and Watergate.

Historians may regard it as a curious thing that the left and the press have been so determined to fit current events into templates based on events that occurred 30 to 40 years ago. The people who effectively framed the issues raised by Vietnam and Watergate did something like the opposite; they insisted that Vietnam was not a reprise of World War II or Korea and that Watergate was something different from the operations J. Edgar Hoover conducted for Franklin Roosevelt or John Kennedy. Journalists in the 1940s, '50s and early '60s tended to believe they had a duty to buttress Americans' faith in their leaders and their government. Journalists since Vietnam and Watergate have tended to believe that they have a duty to undermine such faith, especially when the wrong party is in office.

That belief has its perils for journalism, as the Fitzgerald investigation has shown. The peril that the press may find itself in the hot seat, but even more the peril that it will get the story wrong. The visible slavering over the prospect of a Rove indictment is just another item in the list of reasons why the credibility of the "mainstream media" has been plunging. There's also a peril for the political left. Vietnam and Watergate were arguably triumphs for honest reporting. But they were also defeats for America--and for millions of freedom-loving people in the world. They ushered in an era when the political opposition and much of the press have sought not just to defeat administrations but to delegitimize them. The pursuit of Karl Rove by the left and the press has been just the latest episode in the attempted criminalization of political differences. Is there any hope that it might turn out to be the last?

My response to Barone would be absolutely no hope whatsoever. As Larry Johnson showed in his recent remarks about Karl Rove, those on the Left are losing it. The more President Bush's poll numbers rise and the more progress that is made in Iraq, the worse it is going to get. Don't say I didn't warn you. Actually Paul already has. Things are going to get even nastier and that is not going to help Democrats at the polls in November. By the way, if Republicans get into the gutter with them, it won't help them any either.

Big Mo:

There's a maxim in warfare that you don't win the current war by refighting the last war. That's one of the biggest reasons why the Germans smashed the French in six weeks in 1940, because the French were prepared for a repeat of 1914-1918.

And it's the biggest reason why Bush and the GOP keep winning--often despite themselves--because the stuck-on-stupid Dems have yet to put fourth a platform that doesn't smack of bell-bottoms and flower power and smell like hippies that haven't bathed in three months.

Instead he is doing what he needs to do...and the results are (gasp) actually starting to be noticed by the American people (at least those who aren't Dems).

Global War Against Islamo-Fascism: we are WINNING! Period. Zark's death was ICING on the cake...the actual "cake" was in his pocket! The thumb-drive contained documents that clearly showed them on the run...and LOSING! Everywhere!

Economy: we are WINNING. This is one of the strongest economies in U.S. history. And unlike the so-called "Dot Com" economy, THIS one has good fundamentals!

Immigration: ok...this issue is in doubt. BUT, at least everyone is talking about it, and the two bills to worked on in conference DO contain a few good things. Still, this is a sore point for Bush from both directions. The jury is out though.

Energy: The jury SHOULDN'T be out on this one. Congress is just out to lunch!! The Prez needs to pound on Congress to begin drilling in ANWR, and completely overhaul the U.S. coastal waters drilling regulations.

I think there are two lefts, the visible left and the invisible left. My lovely wife, as liberal as they come, is no Joe Wilson or Larry Johnson. If she were young enough, she'd be in Iraq fighting. She's part of the invisible left.

For all the publicity, Hillary is not saying very many stupid things. Invisible left. Kerry, well, he's visible left. The visible left is going no where, no matter what all the white kids at YKOS thought.

Clinton, Obama, et al, are the invisible left and are the real threat. We can waste far too much time and energy on the moonbats and forget that the real strength of the left is in the folks who don't say stupid things.

Michael Baron has become one of my favorite political pundits. He really impressed me during the 2004 election returns with his detailed knowledge of voting history down to the local level in Ohio.

He's exactly right in saying that when we look back on the history of the last 8 years, we will look back with curiousity on the meida's/liberals actions. Actually I will probably look back and laugh my butt off.

And there is a big difference between 2,500, and a few hundred. So show a little respect for those who gave their lives so that your ignorant behind can talk freely in a chat room, on a friday night, from the comfort of your trailer- park.

The Democrats cannot come up with a specific plan (other than to cut & run) because there IS no other alternative. They keep complaining and moaning about the administration policies but they never give a specific plan for action because there IS no other plan. They're trying to counter out of desperation, hoping the people will fall for the desperation (i.e. Murtha, et al) and the people who are never polled (the silent majority) are not falling for it. At times in the recent past I was becoming worried about the Nov. elections, but each day, I grow less worried. The plan (the ONLY plan) is on and they just cannot deal with it.

Affordable health care, raising the minimum wage, opposing privitization of social security, lowering gas prices, and lowering energy costs. That's pretty much it.

Problem is, the 2 biggest issues facing the country today are not mentioned ONCE: terrorism, and immigration (although they have dropped the culture of corruption thing for now).

This is what they came up with after all the months of strategery? What a laugh!!!!!!

And is it just coincidence that this is released on Friday night when NO ONE (except us news junkies) are paying attention?

Folks, I'm starting to have a hard time not getting too overconfident about GOP GAINS this fall. How can you not when you see such incompetence from the leaders of a major party?

And Dick Morris says the Dem's are going to win back both Houses. Well, that does it for me. I'm not worried at all anymore. Since I've been following his predictions, the exact opposite of what he says happens. Every Time.
