FBI Bust Plot To Bomb Tunnel And Flood New York

The New York Daily News reports on a plot to flood the Holland Tunnel and flood lower Manhattan. Wasn't that sort of like the plot to the 1996 Sylvester Stallone movie Daylight?

The FBI has uncovered what officials consider a serious plot by jihadists to bomb the Holland Tunnel in hopes of causing a torrent of water to deluge lower Manhattan, the Daily News has learned.

The terrorists sought to drown the Financial District as New Orleans was by Hurricane Katrina, sources said. They also wanted to attack subways and other tunnels.

Counterterrorism officials are alarmed by the "lone wolf" terror plot because they allegedly got a pledge of financial and tactical support from Jordanian associates of top terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi before he was killed in Iraq, a counterterrorism source told The News. It's not clear, however, if any cash or assistance was delivered.

...The plotters wanted to detonate a massive amount of explosives inside the Holland Tunnel to blast a hole that would destroy the tunnel, everyone in it, and send a devastating flood shooting through the streets of lower Manhattan.

While the plot may be serious, the the plotters would not have been able to flood lower Manhattan unless they could find a way to suspend the laws of physics.

They'd do better looking for ideas at the Movie-Plot Threat Contest.

This is old, stale news -- leaked now for political purposes.

From the New York Daily News article linked in Kevin's post (emphasis added):

The News has learned that at the request of U.S. officials, authorities in Beirut arrested one of the alleged conspirators, identified as Amir Andalousli, in recent months. Agents were scrambling yesterday to try to nab other suspects, sources said.

Odd though, that the administration chose to leak it to the New York Daily News instead of the New York Times. LOL - It just makes this ploy even more obvious....

but media-savvy Wizbang! readers are too smart to fall for this Republican PR scam, right?

You say this story was leaked now for political purposes? What were these purposes? Don't cite these elusive polls either.

You act like you know the answers, but you're really just guessing.

From one of the links:

"It might flood the Holland Tunnel, but that's all it's going to flood," said Allan McDuffie, an Army Corps of Engineers expert on New York flood patterns. "It's not going to get any higher than the level of the surrounding water."

And when it comes to flooding cites can you get more expertise than the Corps of Engineers?

When did I first learn that "FBI and New York City Police Department officials would not comment yesterday about the investigation, which has been kept under wraps for months?

I learned of it exactly when the republican election machine wanted me to learn of it -- right after they leaked it to the New York Daily News.

I question your questioning of the timing. If this was for an election, wouldn't it make sense to push the story right before the election in November.

You know, like in October? It's done on a Friday during a short work week to affect the outcome of an election.

Be careful playing with electricity while wearing the ol' tin foil cap there...

What is so blatantly obvious, and hilarious as well, is the decision by the republicans to leak this to the New York Daily News instead of the New York Times. Could it be any more obvious that this leak is politically motivated? Guffaw, baby, guffaw.

If you wanted to make a point about snubbing the Times, then the feds should have leaked the information to the NY Post or the NY Sun.

Oh, you mean the NT Tmes reader demographics are the same as the New York Daily News?

Is a New York Times reader more likely to switch to the New York Daily News, or one of the conservative New York papers? Of course it hurts the Times more to support their liberal-space competitor - all you've done is proven my point!

Henry, it's Diebol[d]. While there is no proof that I am aware of that anybody did so in 2000 or '04, the fact is that a moderately skilled computer programmer can break into them and alter the data accumulated and tabulated within in under two minutes.

I think it's reasonable to demand paper trails, which these stupid things lack, and I think it's a bipartisan issue. Or at least it should be. Respecting democracy is supposed to be important for Repubs and Dems.

Everything that comes out of US media is right wing feed direct from the towers of power.
Nothing that comes out of US media is intended to inform or educate, it's all about PR control.
I notice as is so often the case, that the responses are invariably insults, slanders, ad homs or some other such right wing speciality in attacking the messenger, and ignoring the message.
Lee, my namesake, don't listen to these guys, they're probably being paid just over minimum wage to sit in little cubicles churning out hate mail and disinformation to various obscure websites and forums all over the world.(the Bush administration has ushered in the largest expansion of US gov't ever, and almost all of it comes from "security" hiring, ie Homeland security. They must be doing SOMETHING all day)
Until and unless they can come up with some facts instead of insults, they got nothin' but air, and it really shows in their responses.
Keep up the good fight.
