Three Story Building Collapses in Manhattan

No one knows if the building exploded first and then collapsed or if it collapsed first and then an explosion occurred after. People could be trapped in the rubble.

From the AP:

NEW YORK -- A three-story building housing a doctor's office just off Madison Avenue collapsed and burned Monday after what witnesses said was a thunderous explosion that rocked the neighborhood.

The cause was not immediately known, though White House press secretary Tony Snow said there was no and was desponindication of terrorism.

At least two people were under evaluation at a hospital after the collapse. It wasn't immediately clear if anyone was still trapped inside the building, on 62nd street between Madison and Park Avenues on Manhattan's East Side.

Heavy black smoke rose high above the building, wedged between taller structures on 62nd Street between Park and Madison Avenues just a few blocks from Central Park. Damage, including shattered windows, could be seen at one of the adjoining buildings.

Yaakov Kermaier, 36, a resident in a building next door, said he was outside when he heard "a deafening boom. I saw the whole building explode in front of me."

CNN is reporting that the explosion and fire caused the collapse:

NEW YORK (CNN) -- An explosion and fire leveled a residential building on New York's Upper East Side Monday morning, fire officials and eyewitnesses told CNN.

At least one person was transported to the hospital, New York firefighters told CNN personnel on the scene.

Ann McGovern, a neighbor across the street from the three-story E. 62nd Street location, told CNN she "witnessed two bloody people exiting the building just minutes after the explosion."

The New York Fire Department received a call reporting the explosion at 8:40 a.m., department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said.

Smoke from the fire could be seen across Midtown and Manhattan's Upper East Side.

There were doctors' offices and residences in the building.

New York police were also on the scene.

CNN's Larry King was in a hotel nearby at the time of the explosion. He said it felt like an earthquake.

"I've never heard a sound like that," King said.

Update: Fox News just announced that a US counterterrorism official from the Pentagon says that this incident is not terrorism related.

Update II: Allah reports that the building pancaked down on itself.

Update III: WCBS-TV in New York reports that Con Edison was investigating the smell of gas nearby when the building exploded.

Update IV: Fox is reporting that officials are investigating a possible suicide attempt. A doctor who worked in one of the offices, and who was pulled out of the wreckage and is in critical condition, may have been attempting suicide.

Update V: NY1 News has more on this suicide story. The doctor wrote an email indicating he was thinking about suicide.

I wonder if there has been any mention about whether or not it could have been from a gas leak. My television has been on Disney Channel/Nick Jr. all morning so this is the first I have heard of it.

Lurking Observer:

This building collapsed on itself??

Given the sturm und drang in threads regarding the Twin Towers, I expect to hear now that this building, too, had been subjected to careful controlled demolitions; modified, missile-carrying aircraft; and all sorts of explanations of why, if the building didn't take out its neighbors but collapsed mostly on itself, it's proof that there's a BushCo conspiracy at work.

Local Media reports that the explosion was the result of a suicide attempt. Apparently one of the Doctors sent an E-mail indicating he could not go on.. Not sure if he intended to commit suicide through the explosion or by gas inhalation.

Personally, I think this isn't the time to be playing gotcha, LO. Facts are unknown, and people may still be in jeopardy. There will be plenty of time for nuts of all persuasions to spin their theories and score points when the dust has settled.

Old Coot:

It's time to start listening to the moonbats. Buildings need to be constructed of either chicken-wire or bent coat-hangers to withstand anything that Rove can devise (except perhaps his mind-rays, which only tinfoil can block).
And hey, this would be an excellent subject for another Agore movie; perhaps starring Michael Moore dressed in a cheapo Godzilla suit vainly trying to destroy moonbat-constructed buildings by sitting on them and using his copious flatulence as fuel for the fire.

LO & Old Coot, it's odd (to be polite) to find humour in this situation. Hope (or pray, if you're into it) that no one dies, and hyuk-hyuk about something else.

The building pancaked in on itself????

Clearly this cannot be the result of a gas explosion, but rather must be a the result of controlled explosives by demolition experts.

Maybe some fools will believe that this was an
"accident", but not I?

Enough posting for now. The Duke of Wellington, Marshal Blucher and the Prince of Orange have massed their troops at Waterloo and I must ride to battle!

Look into the number of buildings that "blew up from a gas explosion" around the time of 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq.

Of course the Bush Government is not going to say "Yes people are blowing up buildings around the USA". If they admitted that, they would have to admit that the American people have paid a price for the invasion of Iraq.

If you are a curious and intelligent person, you might also look into the number of train derailments that have occurred since 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq. If you can find them.

Funny thing. Train derailments were always in the news. Then for some odd reason, there were no more reports on train derailments. The only place you could find news on them was in the local paper of the town they derailed in.

Not even the government can convince people who saw the wreckage of the derailed train that it didn't happen. They have to report it locally. But to the USA at large, it is like the train derailment never happened.

Go ahead. Connect that with wire tapping of phones, surveillance of your bank account, etc. Of course they would censor the news to keep people from knowing that trains are derailing and buildings are blowing up because of the invasion of Iraq.

The real story is the [alle... (Below threshold)

The real story is the [alleged] doctor, his depression, who knew what and did or didn't do anything to prevent this tragedy. [Conspiracy theorists can consider whether the doctor was framed for the "suicide" attempt a la Vince Foster]. Oxygen and certain anesthetic gases can be quite explosive, as could oxygen and natural gas. All available in a doctor's building. It seems unlikely a physician would not predict the outcome being quite disastrous with the use of this method of exit - a person who is depressed in angry, and not at just themselves.

Physicians as patients, particularly psychiatric patients, present significant obstacles to the treating physician. If the doctor seeks treatment, that is, as there are many barriers [or excuses] that present themselves to a physician seeking treatment for a psychiatric disorder. Our current system in this country ignores these problems. A few countries [UK, Australia and Norway] recognize the situation and have established systems of "doctors for doctors." If a suicide [attempt] is indeed what happened, perhaps the attention this incident provides will stimulate an appropriate response in this country.

Of course it was Bush. His explosive team blew it up to take the heat off the twin towers. All 236 people involved will never breath a word of it for the rest of their lives. The secret will never get out that no jews showed up for work the day that Bigfoot faked the moon landing which was filmed at Area 51.
