Even more Evil is Descending Upon Pennsylvania

The freaks from the so called Westboro Baptist Church are planning to picket the funerals of the innocent little girls who were visciously murdered on Monday.

(CNSNews.com) - A Kansas-based group that says "God hates fags" plans to picket the funerals of the Amish girls killed by a disturbed man in Lancaster County, Pa.

The Westboro Baptist Church -- described as a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League -- has made a name for itself by picketing the funerals of U.S. troops killed in Iraq. The troops are dying as punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality, the group says.

The Westboro group says the Amish school girls were "killed by a madman in punishment for Gov. Ed Rendell's blasphemous sins against Westboro Baptist Church.

"Gov. Ed Rendell -- speaking and acting in his official capacity to bind the State of Pennsylvania -- slandered and mocked and ridiculed and condemned Westboro Baptist Church on national Fox TV," the group says on its website.

"Rendell also revealed a conspiracy to employ the State's police powers to destroy WBC in order to silence WBC's Gospel message. Co-conspirators identified by Rendell included state officials, citizens, lawyers, legislators and media," the website says.

Westboro Baptist Church said it is "continuing to pray for even worse punishment upon Pennsylvania."

These people call themselves Christians but they are nothing more than the personification of evil masquerading as Christians. They are an abomination to God and His love and forgiveness.

Jay at Stop the ACLU has a lot to say about this:

What the slaying of these innocent little girls has to do with America tolerating gays is beyond me, but somehow in the twisted minds of this cult of freaks they have justified their actions on this. This is just plain sickening. I appeal to the Patriot Guard Riders, even thought this family isn't military, and all Americans who can to do what they can to protect this grieving family from protesters making this day of mourning even more difficult for them. Absolutely sick. Nothing but a publicity stunt. Who do these freaks think they are convincing?

Mary Katharine Ham has updates:

Salem's own radio host Mike Gallagher is doing the actual Lord's work-- not the Lord of "God Hates Fags" signage, which seems to be a very different one from the one I know-- by offering the Phelpses radio time if they'll promise not to protest these poor girls' funerals.

Normally, I'd object to someone legitimizing these freaks with a platform, but they're beyond legitimizing, so I think it's probably not a bad trade to spare the poor people of Philadelphia some more sadness.

Plus, Fred Phelps' way with words has the effect of making any platform you give him look a whole lot like this one. Give 'im enough rope, as they say.

Ms. Underestimated has more:

Mike Gallagher's just received the faxed Press Release from Shirley Phelps that they have agreed to stop their protests at the funerals, and she will have an hour on Mike's show tomorrow. Don't know what hour it will be. Oh, by the way... Mike said Shirley told him that some of the signs they were going to carry at the funerals were going to say "YOUR DAUGHTER IS A WHORE!" Lovely people, huh?

And these people call themselves followers of Christ?

Blue Star Chronicles:

This is a perfect example of exact opposite interpretations of the same religion. The hate cult is simply using the Amish for their own publicity and material enrichment. I would say they should be ashamed of themselves, but they are incapable of that.

Update: Nathan at Church and State writes of the Westboro Cult very diplomatically:

Just because someone does something they want to do and invoke God's name, does not make them a Christian. It is widely known that Hitler professed to be a Christian. Some laugh, others actually believe he was . . . just because he said he was.

We must look at their lives and determine if their lives line up with what is in the Bible. If not, we don't condemn them to hell, but we certainly don't condone their actions and welcome them into the camp as a like-minded person or group.

About 2 hours ago I heard on the Mike Gallagher radio show that the Westboro Baptists agreed to stay away from the funerals because Gallagher is letting them speak for 1 hour on his show tommorow. Should be interesting in a "plane crash" sorta way...

Seems to me the best course would be to give them one hour of air time - with nobody responding to them. Simple silence from the host, a disclaimer before and after each ad break that these bastards were ready to protest at Amish funerals, and that their rantings do not reflect in any way the views of the station, the host, the owners, the advertisers...

Funny how some people thrive on the contempt they so diligently try to garner from others.

I'd have a new respect for Gallagher if his crew would have about 200,000 volts reversed from the antenna feed back into the Phelps' headphones (accidentally, mind you) once they're on air.

That would kick ass. I wish these people would choke already.

Kim - great post. A nice reminder of the centrality of love in Christianity.

But it didn't take long for some to miss the whole point.

Are you saying that these peoples actions are at all somehow forgivable? You know, I thought about that carefully before I posted above. Do you think Jesus would forgive them for what they have done and continue to do? Who knows, but personally I don't think so - but that's my opinion and my interpretation. Their actions are nothing less than a total and complete disgrace. However sad/ironic you deem my statement above to be, you may take it or leave it as it remains the same.

One thing that's been highlighted regarding the protests by this "church", is that when they do this during military funerals, it's on government property, but for this one, obviously it's not.

I wonder how far away the local authorities have stated that they would have to be in order to 'protest'/'demonstrate' or whatever the hell they are referring to it as.

About the same as the odds they make it back home alive if they ever visit one of the mountain communities in WVa. Really a lot of Loyal American Vet's in WVa.

Why are they still alive and wasting oxygen?

Well, first, I don't think mattyd quite understood 914's sarcasm.

As for Christ and God forgiving them, that is promised to all mankind: All is forgiven; all you have to do you ask for it, sincerely. (I don't think the Westboro folks quite understand this concept...at all.)

Do I think God or Jesus forgives them? Not mine or anyone's place to say. But if He does, then I must.

The hardest thing I say in Mass every Sunday is "...forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us..."

There are times when that is NOT easy to do, not easy at all.

For the Westboro kooks all I keep thinking is:
"forgive them Father for they know not what they do..."

By the way...as any Christian (and I am one)knows
it is not what we do that counts(where were my fellow Christians last week on the torture vote?)we only have to accept Jesus as our savior. I am sure this congregation has done this.

Now..if we want to expand it..and say being a Christian also includes following the words of Christ...then let us start activly liviing our lives this way..

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying...

* Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)
* Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. (Verse 4)
* Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
* Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)
* Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
* Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
* Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)
* Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)

Are you saying that these people's actions are at all somehow forgivable?

I didn't say that. But Peter F addressed forgiveness very nicely.

I said it's sad and ironic that in a post basically about how love is central to true Christianity, you advocated running 200,000 volts through Phelp's headphones.

MattyD, remember this important fact...
Not all of us are Christians.

Kim's post was largely about Christianity. But I'm sure you can find another thread more welcoming to non-Christian topics.

I don't think mattyd quite understood 914's sarcasm.

Perhaps. But I've seen many posts from 914. I don't think he's being sarcastic.

Belief is a matter of personal faith;while you believe salvation does not require acts,I believe deeds are necessary (but not sufficient). That's why I believe you to be a heretic.

Just because Christians believe in love does not mean they have to allow Phelps and his ilk to protest at the funerals. If it's on private property, have all of the protestors arrested for tresspassing if they so much as set foot on the ground.

Enabling is not a good thing, love or no love. That being said, I don't think physical violence will solve anything. To Phelps and the "Baptists" who follow, such "persecution" will be, to them, proof that they are right.

Ok mattyd,

I didn't say that. No, you did not. Fair enough.

I did make a mistake - it's actually the amperage as opposed to voltage.

...and yes, Peter, that is a good, no, very very good point similar to what Kim stated;

As for Christ and God forgiving them, that is promised to all mankind: All is forgiven; all you have to do you ask for it, sincerely. (I don't think the Westboro folks quite understand this concept...at all.)

But then you hit it just right - I don't think that they believe what they are doing needs forgiving - and they continue with this monstrous behavior again and again.
