Racist Stereotypes And The Duke (Non) Rape Case

Betsy Newmark has an excellent piece at the Examiner today about the Duke lacrosse (non) rape case and racist stereotypes.

If the case is dismissed shortly, what can we expect from all those who were so ready to brand the Duke lacrosse team as a group of racist rapists? Will the 88 professors who published an ad praising the protestors who weren't waiting for due process and already labeling the lacrosse players rapists apologize for their rush to judgment? Probably not.

I expect we'll hear instead calls for healing. The players will be urged to get on with their lives and not to focus on suing Durham or the D.A. They'll be reminded that Durham is not a wealthy county and can't afford an expensive civil suit.

Those who were quick to say that this story was emblematic of racism at elite colleges will say that the lesson is still true, even though this one specific story was a hoax. Wahneema Lubiano, the Duke professor of African and American Studies who led the group of 88 who published that ad, wrote back in May that, no matter the outcome, the whole story exposed deeper truths about racism on Duke's campus. Expect that storyline to be repeated if the charges are all dropped. The song of "fake but accurate" will be sung again.

Sadly, we didn't learn from the Tawana Brawley hoax that we should pause when a story seems to fit a stereotypical version of racism. The storyline of rich, privileged white boys raping a poor black girl seemed so apt that some people embraced it without waiting to evaluate the evidence.

For some, the facts don't even matter. Newsweek reported in April that one student at North Carolina Central University where the accuser attended school wanted the players to be prosecuted "whether it happened or not. It would be justice for things that happened in the past."

Our justice system deserves better than a "fake, but accurate" approach to prosecution. We don't prosecute people just because they fit a stereotype. It was attitudes like that which resulted in the injustices that the NCCU student wanted addressed in the first place. In this case, turnabout is not fair play.

Read it all.

No. Seriously. Who didn't see that phrase coming?

I recently read where over 90% of the murders of black since 1974 were committed by blacks.

How come Jesse, Bookman, Oprah, etc dont try to address this. If they really cared about their own, rather than just their own $$, they would. They are quick as hell to cry racism, etc when something happens to one of their own at the hands of whites, but 90%+ is pretty damned disturbing.

Could the protesters energy have been betetr spent not on a media affair, but maybe on sitting down with black youths helping guide them??

I think the lady involved thought that she could yell rape and the rich white kids would pay to shut her up. But she should have known that the police would get involved and when they did, her whole scheme fell apart.

And that has nothing to do with her race. A scheming white person would have been just as likely to try something like that.

Gianni: Most murders are committed by someone the victim knows so that's not surprising. Probably the same thing would be true for any ethnic group.

blackcat beat me to it. That's one of those satistics that gets bandied about as some kind of gospel concerning blacks and violence. . . most people still associate primarily with their own race, and most murders are committed by someone the victim knew.

Yeah, let's keep that stereotype of the white man being violent towards black women going because everyone knows black men treat black women sooooo great. lol.

The locals can reflect upon their wisdom in electing the idiot DA when they see their libraries, rec centers, and other services shut because the county is out of money.

I dunno, isn't it racist to assume that because they are upper-class white males they automatically raped the poor black woman? Who's really being racist here?

I do hope those boys sue the pants off the county. Serves them right for being such idiots.

Keep in mind that to many liberals, at least those with a stake in the game of race baiting, only whites can be racist. You must have power to be racist.
Never mind the amount of power a professor has over the life of a student at the same university...

Blackcat and John,

Sure, it makes sense, BUT, have you ever heard Jesse, Bookman, etc make as much of a deal of black on black murder as they do, of, say, a rich white kid allegedly raping a blk hooker/stripper, or maybe blaming the fed govt because the people, city, and state govt failed in evacuating prior to a potential cat 5 storm?

Guess there isnt much of a photo op for a 15 yr old black killing a 13 yr old black because he 'disrespected' him by wearing a Cowboys jersey in Newark??

Nice Guy:

Duke Lacrosse Rape Accuser Mentioned No Condoms Were Used

The stripper's body was completely void of any sign of a sexual assault, the innocent boys were devoid of any scratches, bruising, or marks, and the alleged crime scene was completely devoid of DNA that would be expected in a violent gang rape.

It is impossible that a crime scene with three drunk men in a small enclosed room with a fighting and clawing woman being orally, virginally, and anally penetrated not leave any DNA evidence of urine, blood, vaginal fluid, sweat, fecal matter, scat smears, saliva, tears, or semen... especially if condoms were used. How would they take off the condoms during all this chaos without spilling, smearing, or touching the content inside or outside of the condom?

When investigators questioned the stripper after DNA tests on the semen from multiple men found inside her vagina and rectum didn't match any of the Duke players on the entire lacrosse team, the stripper admitted to having had sex with at least three men around the time of the alleged rape including her boyfriend and two men who drove her to Duke.
The DA Mike Nifong didn't talk to the prostitute about her wild claims of gang rape, in which she described in great detail, claiming no finders or any other objects were used to penetrate her, yet Nifong did conspire with the DNA lab owner to hide evidence that proves the three victims of this lie are innocent.

I hope blacks have come farther than that! Even the most racist blacks have abondoned her. Haven't heard a peep from Je$$ie Jack$son and Al $harpton, and you know how much they love preaching "blacks" are victims and everyone else has life handed to them on a silver platter.

This case was a result of t... (Below threshold)

This case was a result of the lies we tell ourselves about white racism. The fact of the matter is that white-on-black rape (or any other type of crime) is low today and has ALWAYS been low. There was no "historical time" when there was widespread rapes of blacks by whites. The truth is the opposite.

A well-known national correspondent asked me to do some research on this matter for an article s/he was considering writing for publication. It was easy to find the number of black-on-white rapes: about 20,000 a year -- that's only the reported rapes.

However, reported white-on-black rapes are consistently reported as an "asterisk" in government data -- with an explanation that the sample size is too small for extrapolation. From other sources, I found reported numbers of annual white-on-black rapes to range from a low of 100 to a high of 900. I think it would be fair to say that the true number is about 500.

This means that for every black woman raped by a white, there are 40 white women raped by blacks. But it gets worse.

If we look at "multiple-offender" interracial rapes -- the type that was alleged in the Duke case -- there are about 3,000 such reported gangrapes of white women by blacks each year. But, so far as my many hours of research could find, the only other cases of the reverse, EVER, were the Tawana Brawley and Duke Hoaxes.

Get a calculator and do a quick calculation please: Divide 20,000 and 3,000 by 365 days, to see how many white women are daily victims of black rapists. Heck, further divide by 24 to find the number of HOURLY victims. Then remember: the myth of the white-man as a sex-crazed beast hunting black women is a deliberate falsehood, perpetrated for purely socio-political ends.
