Con Men For Hillary

Just when you thought it was safe to start a new pyramid scheme . . . another reputed con artist is raising money for Senator Hillary Clinton's Presidential campaign, as Charles Hurt and Jeane MacIntosh report for the New York Post:

A purported pyramid-scheme operator who was run out of Arkansas when Bill Clinton was governor has reinvented himself as the head of an upstate group accused of being a "cult" - and his devotees have pumped thousands into Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential run.

Executives and top associates of the Albany-based NXIVM group - along with their family members - donated $29,900 to Clinton's presidential campaign, according to federal records.

On March 14 and April 13, records show, more than a dozen contributions poured into Clinton's coffers from NXIVM, an executive and group-awareness training organization led by Brooklyn-born Keith Raniere, 47.

Most were from first-time political donors, each giving the $2,300 maximum.

Read it all at the link above. It's apparent the Clinton campaign doesn't care to know very much about their donors. Now, if media or bloggers dig out the dirt, Hillary will return the money when she must, always with the same excuse - "We had NO idea of this!"

At some point, turning a blind eye should become an issue of its own. Isn't it a concern that the woman who, when questioned by a federal grand jury about the Rose Law Firm records which had been in her possession despite being under subpoena for two years, answered "I don't recall" a reported 147 times now is giving the stock answer about questionable contributions and contributors, "I didn't know"?

Observers usually interpret Hillary's high negative ratings as an indication many people "don't like her." Isn't it just as likely those negatives arose because people don't TRUST her instead?

In her case, mistrust seems particularly well placed . . .

Careful with this one, Jim. Don't tie this to the "Hillraiser" Hsu albatross. NXIVM is giving far and wide, not just to Hillary or Democrats. The press attacked NY Republicans very recently for accepting donations from NXIVM. Also, unlike "Hillraiser" Hsu, they seem to be dotting their i's and crossing their t's with submitting required disclosures etc. The cries of 'cult' and descriptions sound awfully similar to the attacks on the Scientologists, etc.

(Note that I'm not taking a side here, they're closemouthed enough that there's not a lot of hard information about NXIVM out there, but to link this group to Hsu is pretty precarious.)

The media is very much out to get NXIVM, too, so make sure you take that into account. And the Post is basically a gussied-up Enquirer.

It's a bad idea to confuse legitimate scandals like the Hsu scandal with something like money from NXIVM, people that actually have the money and can throw it around however they like. Link NXIVM more to like George Soros, rich people blatantly trying to influence politics, not underhanded illegal stuff like Hsu.

Used to be, you could buy a District Court judge in Chicago for about 50 bucks a decision.

But I guess the dollar went further back then.

Falze ~ The only "link to Hsu" I point out is the incredible lack of vetting on the part of the Clinton campaign (in fact, Hsu's name isn't mentioned in my post at all). If Raniere has been shut down by the feds in the past for an investment scam, as reported, any similarity between him and Hsu are in the eye of the beholder.

As far as other recipients of his group's largesse, it is admittedly more difficult for campaigns for lower offices to run the sort of screening expected of a Presidential campaign, but if Republican candidates have taken money which turns out to be tainted in some way, that's THEIR problem, not mine.

No, I understand Jim, where you were going with this. But, c'mon, you talked about a 'pyramid scheme'. At best the veil between your post and Hsu is made of wet tissue paper. The boy who cried wolf is a lousy job.

Falze ~ The phrase "pyramid scheme" comes directly from the article. I have no reason to believe it is an incorrect description.

Certainly the strange tale of Norman Hsu makes my ears perk up at any similar-sounding news about Hillary's contributors. Apparently, though, even NOT mentioning Hsu isn't enough for you.

If I HAD mentioned him by name, would you not have complained more about making the connection, since it would have been overt? But when I don't mention him, it's just a "veil . . . made of wet tissue paper."

Maybe I just shouldn't post any unfavorable stories about Hillary's fundraising at all, just to be safe?

It appears that Hsu was using his Democratic connections, for example Hillary, to prop up the credibility of his pyramid schemes.

Most serious political observers predict Clinton to be the most likely to win both the Democratic nomination and the general election both. For this reason, some of the worst of elements will attempt to gain influence with her through their contributions. If she stumbles politically, then the same bad people will find the next most likely winner to support.
