The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is Victor Manuel Perez. He gets the award for the following.

HOLLYWOOD - Police arrested a man suspected of stealing flower vases from a local cemetery and selling them to area scrap metal yards, according to an arrest report released Thursday.

Police traced a December theft to Victor Manuel Perez, 44, and arrested him Wednesday after he used his real identification card to sell the vases, according to the police report. Perez told detectives he is part of a group that has gone around stealing the vases -- at least nine times in recent weeks.

"It's one thing to walk into a construction site and steal a spool of copper wire," police spokesman Sgt. Manny Marino said. "It's something else to go to a grave and steal a flowerpot from the grave marker. It's a little bit more emotional, especially to the family members."

I'm one of those family members. My son's vase was stolen by this worthless piece of shit or one of his accomplices just days before my Daniel's birthday. Knucklehead doesn't do this scumbag justice, but if I say what I really feel Jay may delete my post.

Victor Manuel Perez is today's Knucklehead of the Day. More of the Sun-Sentinel article is below the fold.

Detectives charged Perez with one count of grand theft in connection with a Dec. 12 sale of vases. Hollywood police are also working to track other suspects and plan to share their information with Palm Beach county agencies working similar thefts from last week and January.

"He could potentially be facing more charges, if he's found to have taken part in the other ones," Marino said. "Right now, it's only in Hollywood."

Police said Perez sold at least 20 vases taken from Hollywood Memorial Gardens cemetery, at 6301 Taft Street, to Best Recycling, also in Hollywood, on Dec. 12. He used an ID card from Camden County, N.J., where he also lives, and sold the $320, 2-pound vases. At about $1.20 per pound, he received $55.

A Best Recycling manager later identified Perez, according to a police report. Perez, who had left for New Jersey, returned to South Florida this week.

In an interview, Perez told detectives a group that stole vases at least nine times over several weeks, according to a police report. They then sold the vases to scrap yards in Hollywood and Pembroke Park.

Cemetery officials usually did not know the flower vases were missing until family members complained, Marino said.

"It's really frustrating," said Jeff Casey, general manager of Fred Hunters Memorial Services, the cemeteries' owner. "We find this very troubling, that anyone would steal vases from those who are deceased."

Casey said the company has stepped up patrols and surveillance at their two cemeteries, totaling 50 acres, replaced about 200 stolen vases since December, and are working closely with detectives, Casey said.

The theft of bronze, bronze, copper and aluminum items to be sold at scrap metal yards occurs year-round. Just last week, about 300 bronze vases were reported stolen from the Boynton Memorial Cemetery in Boynton Beach. In January, thieves stole more than 500 flower vases, worth about $60,000, from another cemetery at west of Lake Worth.

Perez has been charged with grand theft. He is being held at the Broward County Main Jail on $10,000 bond.

Jay Tea adds: Bill, please speak freely. The official rule is "no profanities in titles." The unofficial rule is "use profanity only after careful consideration, and rarely enough to maintain the words' power."

So if you want to call Mr. Perez a pig-fucking asswipe and worthless piece of shit, then please call him a pig-fucking asswipe and a worthless piece of shit. I think we (meaning both the readers and the staff) will not succumb to the vapors.

What is almost as troubling is the fact that there are buyers and a market for these vases out there. No doubt, they know what they are buying.
