Who Are You? 'Cause I Really Wanna Know

Yesterday, John McCain asked a very simple -- but very important question: Who is Barack Obama?

Everyone has an answer -- he's the Democratic nominee for president. He is currently in his fourth year of his first US Senate term. Before that, he was an Illinois State Senator, a lawyer, community organizer, president of the Harvard Law Review, child of a Kenyan father and an American mother, born in Hawaii, raised for a while in Indonesia.

But just try to look beyond the official biography, and you end up with far more questions than answers.

This is brought into even starker contrast when you compare what we know about Barack Obama with what we know about John McCain.

For example, we know that John McCain graduated almost at the bottom of his class at Annapolis. We have no idea how Obama did, academically, either as an undergraduate or in law school.

We know that McCain showed reporters over 1800 pages of his medical records. Obama released a single page from his doctor that said "yup, he's fine."

We know that McCain, after his release as a prisoner of war, went on to command a training squadron before retiring from the Navy and running for Congress. We don't know just what Obama did in his legal career.

As remarkable as Obama's official biography is, it's the items that are omitted that are really enlightening. One of the biggest weaknesses people cite in Obama is his lack of executive experience, but that's not entirely accurate.

Barack Obama served on the boards of two very large organizations. He spent seven years with the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (the first four in charge) and eight years as a director of the Joyce Foundation. But he doesn't want to talk about those 15 years of executive experience.

Could it be because he was an abject failure at both?

I dunno. Obama doesn't want to talk about it. But the circumstantial evidence is... interesting.

Obama served as a director for the Joyce Foundation from 1994 to 2002. During that time, the Foundation put a LOT of resources into redefining the 2nd Amendment as not a collective right, and trying to ban handguns entirely.

A few of the tactics the group tried?

The subsidized a book entitled "Every Handgun Is Aimed At You: The Case For Banning Handguns."

More importantly, they struck upon a novel legal strategy for undermining legal support for the 2nd Amendment. They, in essence, "bought" articles in law reviews attacking the theory of the 2nd Amendment being an individual right. These articles gave judges inclined to rule against the 2nd Amendment the legal cover they needed.

This ultimately failed, as just this last term the Supreme Court ruled, in the Heller case, that the 2nd Amendment is, indeed, an individual right.

So, what does this have to do with Obama? I dunno. Obama doesn't talk about it. But the circumstantial evidence is compelling. Obama has a long record of pushing for gun control. He sponsored some of the most restrictive gun-control laws in Illinois. He once filled out a questionnaire saying he supported an outright ban on handguns. Or maybe he didn't -- a "misinformed" aide filled out the form. Or, at least, that question, as Obama filled out other parts of it. Or something.

Also, the plan involved "sponsoring" Law Reviews at various law schools to publish articles in favor of gun control. Obama had been the editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Again, all circumstantial. But interesting.

And then there's the Chicago Annenberg Foundation. This program was set up to improve Chicago's public schools. Bill Ayers, unrepentant former terrorist ("guilty as hell, free as a bird," in his own words), worked for years to start this program. And who was the founding head of the Challenge? Barack Obama.

Obama, who describes Ayers as "some guy in my neighborhood" who he met at a few meetings. Obama, a lawyer and former failed community organizer (he cited his ineffectiveness as an organizer as part of his reason for going to law school), with no real track record of doing much of anything, was put in charge of a foundation that started off with a bankroll of $50 million and ultimately spent over three times that much.

There are many unfavorable things one can call Bill Ayers. Despicable. Communist. (Sorry, "small-c communist" is the term he prefers.) Radical. Terrorist. Anti-American.

But I don't think you can fairly call him "overly trusting" or "naive" or "gullible." And those are the qualities one would ascribe to someone who puts a complete stranger (or even a very casual acquaintance) in charge of a project Ayers put that much effort into creating.

Others have noted that, despite the official statements, there is a very good chance Ayers and Obama crossed paths long before 1995. In 1988, both men were part of the Alliance for Better Chicago Schools, or ABCs. Could Ayers have met the young Obama through that connection, found something he liked about the guy, and remembered him a few years later, when he was again working at "improving" Chicago's schools?

According to the official story, absolutely not. The two men were barely acquainted when Ayers put Obama in charge of the CAC. Unofficially, the theory is a hell of a lot more plausible.

So, now that Obama is heading up the CAC, with a nine-figure budget to improve Chicago's schools, what does he do?

Well, he oversees out the doling of money not to the schools themselves, but to "outside partners" who, in turn, work with the schools. Outside partners like Ayers' "Peace School," which pushes an internationalist, pro-UN world view on young students. Outside partners like Ayers' old crony, Maoist Mike Klonsky, who took $175,000 for his "Small Schools Project." Outside partners like the Trinity United Church of Christ, Obama's church for 20 years and headed by race-baiter and black separatist Jeremiah Wright.

Obama ran the board for four years, then stepped down to a board member for three years longer, until the Foundation shut down in 2002. In the end, they spent over $150 million on improving Chicago's schools.

And the result? A study showed virtually no difference between the schools the Challenge "helped" and those they did not. In short, Obama spent seven years and $150 million and achieved exactly nothing.

Except, of course, lining the pockets of his and Ayers' friends. With money from charities and the people of Chicago.

These are the kinds of things that Obama doesn't want talked about. These are the kinds of things that shows what Obama has done when he is placed in an executive position. These are the kinds of things that sensible people ought to keep in mind when they are deciding who they want to have as their Chief Executive of our nation.

And these are the kinds of things that the mainstream media ought to be telling us. Why aren't they?

Jay, you summed it up very well.

What I want to know is when will Obama stop sending his misinformed lackeys to answer these questions and start providing direct answers himself?

The Obama campaign manager, David Axelrod, has been stirring up a cloud of confusion based on minsinformation. Axelrod tried to excuse the extent of Obama's involvement with Ayers, stating, "Bill Ayers lives in his neighborhood. Their kids attend the same school. ... They're certainly friendly, they know each other, as anyone whose kids go to school together."

It's an obvious fiction pitched by Axelrod, since the Obama children are presently in elementary school, while Ayers' children are all grown adults, but the Ayers-Obama family connection doesn't stop at the imaginary connections between the children.

"Why aren't they?"

That's a rhetorical question, right?

This is exactly what I mean when I say his supporters show a total lack of curiosity about him. There seems to be no concern that he has no record of ever doing anything he says he's going to do as president;

Clean up Washington? (no indication that he ever tried to clean up Chicago.)

Improve education? (never did that either.)

Make those rich people pay? "On average, 48% of corporations that generated $50 million or more in annual sales in Illinois paid no income taxes from 1997 through 2004. In 2004 alone, 54% of corporations that filed an Illinois income tax return and made $257 billion in U.S. sales, paid no Illinois corporate income taxes; these firms represent 54% of the state's Gross State Product." (Oddly enough, this was Obama's entire State Senate tenure.)

Try to ban guns or let the individual keep their guns? (Who knows? He talks out both sides of his face on this one but his actual actions say he's overly-restrictive.)

Make Washington more transparent? (Hell, he won't even be transparent about his own past.)

That's just a few things. It's not like we have a plethora of information to work with here. Someone point out to me where he's actually done something he says he'll do as president, besides re-distribute money. Show me where he's ever successfully put to practical use any of the legislation he's had a hand in.

WASHINGTON, Oct 06, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Republican National Committee (RNC) today filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against the Obama for America campaign addressing its acceptance of foreign national and excessive contributions. The complaint demonstrates that the Obama campaign has failed to comply with federal campaign finance law in its fundraising. Newsweek also taken notice of the problems in its article Obama's 'Good Will' Hunting, and has noted McCain camp made all of its donor information public while the Obama campaign has refused??? American Spectator in its article Obama's Fishy $200 Million reports that an unnamed auditor for the Federal Elections Commission is being prevented investigating questionable fundraising techniques by the Obama campaign. Obama has already had to deal with several FEC complaints about fraudulent donors and illegal foreign contributions, and the FEC says those complaints have not been resolved. Obama camp has been cagey about the means by which it has made its historic fundraising hauls, which now total almost $500 million for the election cycle. His opponents during primaries raised questions about the huge amount of e-retail sales Obama camp was making for such things as t-shirts and other campaign paraphernalia, and how such sales were being tracked and used for fundraising purposes. While the profits of those items counted against the $2,300 personal donation limit. Ignorned by MSM like CNN & MSNB. FEC analyst says that Obama's filings indicate he has received large, bundled sums of donations from overseas, sometimes exceeding a quarter millions dollars. "It's suspicious, and it's the small donations made by credit card that need to be examined. Obama camp ignores the FEC. Until recently, the Obama Web allowed a contributor to select the country where he resided from the entire membership of the United Nations, including such friendly places as North Korea and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Unlike McCain's or Sen. Hillary Clinton's online donation pages, the Obama site DOES NOT ask for PROOF of CITIZENSHIP!!! until recently. Clinton's presidential campaign required U.S. citizens living abroad to actually fax a copy of their passport before a donation would be accepted. With such lax vetting of foreign contributions, the Obama camp may have directly contributed to questionable fundraising by foreigners.

People want answers from the candidates not questions from them. John McCain is asking questions about Obama. The first sentence of the diary is as follows:

Yesterday, John McCain asked a very simple -- but very important question: Who is Barack Obama?

Did I misunderstand that sentence?

IMO, most people want to hear what McCain is going to do about the economy, healthcare and the wars. The fact that he is spending his precious air time asking questions about Obama seem like a dodge to me.

How do you see this strategy working? Are people going to see Obama's college transcripts and then vote for McCain because Barack got a C in Western Civ? None of the issues brought up by asking these questions affect the day to day lives of people. That is why I don't think this will work for McCain. I don't believe that's entirely true. We do know McCain's exact class rank and we do know that Obama graduated magna cum laude, which, by Harvard Law's definition seems to be in the top 10% of his class after those an (A) average.

Harvard Law School recognizes the achievement of attaining and maintaining high grades through graduation honors. Students who graduate with a general average of 7.20 and above are honored with the distinction of graduating summa cum laude. The top 10% of the class, excluding summa, are honored with the distinction of graduating magna cum laude. Finally, the next 30% of the class, after magna are honored with the distinction of graduating cum laude.

While it's certainly true that Obama has not released a transcript of his classes and their respective grades, I don't believe McCain has done that either.

But I don't think you can fairly call him "overly trusting" or "naive" or "gullible." And those are the qualities one would ascribe to someone who puts a complete stranger (or even a very casual acquaintance) in charge of a project Ayers put that much effort into creating.

Except, of course, lining the pockets of his and Ayers' friends. With money from charities and the people of Chicago.

Jay, you were much too nice with that one. I saw at least one comment that indicated the poster doubted Obama's executive experience because of his board activities. That the challenge didn't get the result that a reasonable person would have expected begged the point. Obama and Ayers oversight got exactly what the two them wanted to achieve, distribution of funds to their allies, the community activists and "Reform" groups.

Ayers and Obama bankrolled the radicals.

And here it is; the point was NOT to make an academic difference in Chicago Schools. That wasn't the way the grant was worded.

Responding to this opportunity, a 73 member working group of local community activists and national school reform organizations. . .

Of the 500 million Annenberg donated, Chicago got 50 million.

The money was offered as a "Challenge" to schools to bolster existing reform efforts and encourage new ones.

Obama did a great job of disbursing funds to his friends and fellow activists. Ayers raised the money, used Obama as cover and if anyone thinks Ayers had no say in where the money went, you are both a fool and a dupe, which may be the same thing come to think of it.

Don't be a dupe, read the report:

By the way, William Ayers is described as; "A political organizer who became a local professor of education."

Just read that stuff, I am not making it up!

So where did the money go? Read the damn report to see the overall effect and then do your own google to find where the money went. I am tired of spoon feeding Obamanuts who are that way because they simply refuse to read the facts and choose instead to listen to the empty rhetoric.

The Ayers association is important to the task of defining WHO Obama IS. People don't really know who he is, they only listen to his empty rhetoric. And he knows it. Obama is fighting with all he has up to and including the race card to prevent people from being able to define the man and the purpose. But if you really want to know who Obama is, you only have to read his book. I refused to buy the dang thing, but I can sit in Books a Million and read all I need.

Page 11:

"I am new enough on the national political scene that I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views. As such, I am bound to disappoint some, if not all, of them."

People don't project their hopes on Obama because of what he has done. Most haven't a clue what Obama has done or they would barf. People come to Obama because of what they hope he can be. That paraphrases what a serious Democrat operative said about Obama, without the "Barf" comment.

As I have said, the election is McCain's to win or lose based on his ability to define Obama, which Obama is resisting with everything he has.

Making out Obama to be an inexperienced executive isn't the way to go in my opinion. I think Obama is very experienced at what he does by evidence of where he is right frigging now, almost the President of the United States.

What needs to be done is to highlight what Obama has really done with all that experience.

And that job is real easy. All you have to do is quit listening to the rhetoric and start digging. Instead of listening to Obama, read the transcript of what he says and remember the rule, "You can sometimes best judge a politician by what he DOESN'T say." That statement is my one and only contritution to politics and I have been saying it for many years.

If I grant you that he deserves every grade he got, that he probably got a grant or student loans or whatever, if I grant you that he has executive experience and is therefore qualified to run General Motors or whatever, if I grant all that.

Will you then grant that Obama is smart enough to game the electorate? Have you read his book? Have you studied his accomplishments? Have you applied whatever critical thinking you can muster to understanding exactly who Obama is in his heart of hearts?

Or are you projecting on him the values you want him to have instead of doing the hard work of research to find out who the man really is?

Obama says it well - read a few comments above for his exact quotation.

I have posted this quotation over and over and over here and asked Obamanuts to tell me what it means. Not one has seen fit to reply. I suspect that since what he really says is so far off from what they thought he said, when confronted with the direct evidence from the man himself, they go into brain lock and cannot muster a coherent thought.

Give it a try Herman. Maybe you will succeed when so many other Liberals have failed.

Hey dego or whatever.... (Below threshold)

Hey dego or whatever.

Again, I wonder if people think that Obama not being able to transform Chicago is reason enough not to elect him. He put in the work,

You didn't go read the Chicago report? Did you not read my comments based on the fact that I read the report - or dismiss it outright because what the heck, since I am not an Obama supporter, I couldn't possibly be able to muster a real fact. Yea dego, everything I say is a fantasy and the link probably goes to some right wing site - right?

Well, it doesn't.

If you will look at the link, you can see it is the University of Chicago site. Go read the report for yourself. Then you can run off at the mouth based on what you know instead of what you want to believe.

The Annenberg Challenge gave $50 million to William Ayers, who then selected Obama to be Chairman. They then passed out the money to community activists to use in various ways that had NOTHING to do with improving schools.

Sheesh, I am really, really getting tired of having to educate dumbasses who either won't read or can't; who base their opinions on fantasy instead of facts. At least with Steve, you sometimes got a fact or two to mix with the rhetoric. And I note mantis wimped out too. Guess he couldn't stand up to the free speech debate I tried to put him in.

Folks Obama knows exactly what he is doing and the lightweight intellectual caliber of those who want to elect him. What amazes me is that it would appear a heavy percentage of academia has given up their critical thinking to join in Obama worship. Oh well, willing dupes are always the first to get shot.

First, well done Larry as usual, but what's also usual is the extreme lack of thinking after some actual research on obama's past (not that it's really done) by the obamna-bots. They ALL see what they want to see, not what's actually there.

Now as for this snippet from JT's post: "Outside partners like Ayers' "Peace School," which pushes an internationalist, pro-UN world view on young students."

This dovetails very conveniently with obama's sponsoring of Sen. bill S-2433 the "Global Poverty Act."

That bill if passed will impose a global tax on the United States and makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations.

And he has a willing accomplice in Slo Joe Biden, who attempted rush Obama's "Global Poverty Act" through his committee back in February.

And there are those (obama-bots) that claim obama's past associations with far-left people and ideas have had no effect on the current incarnation of The Messiah.

BS... he was and is FAR left who will always take in consideration on an equal basis - at minimum - thoughts, ideas and policies that pass the "global test."

Be fair. The press doesn't want to talk about them either.

Is it really that surprisin... (Below threshold)

Is it really that surprising? When an official does not have substantive answers on policy and leadership they can still become president, or did you forget the last couple presidential campaigns?

Are we more focused on the next presidents ability to lead or on his ability to dig up (or create) trash about his opponent? I would not trust the media, opponents or even 'the people' with my 1st grade transcripts in this environment of ignorance and twisted misinterpretations. You can find fault from anything and in anybody, but do you ever understand somebody more through denouncing their life?

If any of these comments exercised a level of compassion towards somebody different or hinted at understanding why someone like this would hold information back this might be a different comment, but I can clearly see how people still fear what they don't understand. Without seeing one reasonable comment I don't blame the guy for being more private.

Why entrust ones liberty to those who would berate your life's work toward peace as a farce when reaching the highest level of service does not require it?

For any number of reasons, I suspect history was not your strongest subject in college.

A person's background IS important. A person's background is what is called nurture in the equation nature plus nurture that drives a person to what they become in life.

You can find fault from anything and in anybody, but do you ever understand somebody more through denouncing their life?

How else do you evaluate a person's qualification to serve? Do you just believe their promises? Do you project your own worldview on them and hope for the best? This is a free country. As such, if William Ayers can get 50 million dollars from the Annenberg Challenge and then work with Barack Obama, his handpicked Chairman, to distribute that money to "Community Activists and National Reformers," whatever that means, then so be it.

On the other hand, there are many people out here of good will, who might think that 50 million dollars spent toward education would be better for the kids than paying activists to pile political agendas on those kids instead.

See what I mean. Well, you probably won't, because from your words, you are attempting to rationalize Obama's background with what he says, so I will help you there too.

Axelrod gave the Governor of Massachusetts the same script Obama is using. He stole it fair and square from Jimmy Carter's campaign in 1976.

Does that help?

Jay, don't you find this the least bit odd:

Instead of producing records proving Obama is a natural born citizen, Obama and the Democratic National Committee have filed a motion seeking a protective order to block production of documents until a motion to dismiss is the law suit is ruled on by the court. Obama and the Democratic National Committee also claim attorney Berg has no standing - has no right - to bring the lawsuit.

Why would they want to wait until the dismissal of the case to produce the documents? If the case is dismissed, I suppose Berg can't file the same suit again, but I would say Berg definitely has a standing and a right to bring the lawsuit. The MSM is not following this because there would be more pressure for Obama to produce the docs. I am not convinced he was born in Kenya, but "a source" (yes, I know I sound like a tabloid), an unverified tip has discovered that there is a birth certificate of him from Coastal Provincial Gen Hospital Mombasa. I still think he may have been born in Honolulu, but why the cover-up about the docs unless they would prove he is not natural born? Why all the secrecy, and non-disclosure? This would cause a number of repercussions, including his marriage and his running for any office in the U.S. He entered politics by getting his opponent petitioned off the ballot. Let's say he get elected. Would the production of the actual documents be enough to get him removed from office and possibly incarcerated? No one in mainstream is touching this story with any effort. WHY NOT?
