The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is Japan Vice Defense Minister Kohei Masuda. He gets the award for the following-

The Defense Ministry's top bureaucrat on Thursday renewed the ministry's call for sacked Air Self-Defense Force Gen. Toshio Tamogami to return his retirement allowance once he receives it.

"Personally speaking, I hope he will respond to us in some fashion because we've called on him" to return the allowance, Vice Defense Minister Kohei Masuda told a news conference.

Tamogami was ousted from the ASDF without a reprimand earlier this month over a controversial essay that he wrote, a move that the government apparently made to minimize the political fallout and to avoid a protracted disciplinary process.

Masuda said the process to pay the former general the allowance to which he is entitled is currently under way and will be completed by next Tuesday.

The vice minister declined to say how much Tamogami's retirement payment will be, citing privacy concerns, but noted he will receive an amount based on his rank and position as prescribed by law.

According to the ministry, Tamogami's predecessors for the past five years have received about 70 million yen on average on a pre-tax basis.

"We can't take disciplinary action against him. I want to wait for him to exercise his judgment on voluntarily returning (the retirement bonus) as I would like him to make a gesture to the nation, the people," Masuda said.

Why should Tamogami make a gesture? He served his country for 37 years. He earned the retirement bonus. GI at ROK Drop wrote about Tamogami's essay and called it nonsense. I agree, that doesn't mean he should have to forfeit his retirement pay. Just the idea is both idiotic and outrageous and why I name Japan Vice Defense Minister Kohei Masuda today's Knucklehead of the Day.

At least Masuda didn't call... (Below threshold)
Locomotive Breath:

At least Masuda didn't call for Tamogami to commit seppuku.
